Xbox One Kills Used Games
« on: May 21, 2013, 02:05:53 PM »
Deserves its own thread.

http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2013/05/xbox-one-analysis/

Quote
Wired asked Microsoft if installation would be mandatory. “On the new Xbox, all game discs are installed to the HDD to play,” the company responded in an emailed statement. Sounds mandatory to us.

What follows naturally from this is that each disc would have to be tied to a unique Xbox Live account, else you could take a single disc and pass it between everyone you know and copy the game over and over. Since this is clearly not going to happen, each disc must then only install for a single owner.

Microsoft did say that if a disc was used with a second account, that owner would be given the option to pay a fee and install the game from the disc, which would then mean that the new account would also own the game and could play it without the disc.

What about a home with multiple consoles and users? It doesn't make sense to make consumers have to pay this "fee" for something they should have the right to do with as they please. There are way too many questions than I have answers to and until I get some real answers I'm out.

Despite the system not requiring it, developers will be able to create games that will not play offline. Wired reports that games will be able to hook into Microsoft's Azure cloud services with a lack of offline support, but there is no requirement for them to do so yet. A second part to the always online rumor was some type of activation system that prevents used games. Microsoft says it's "designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games," and promises to offer more details in future. Wired has some additional details, noting that secondary use of a game disc will require a fee so that it will be marked and owned and can be played without the disc — something the Xbox One supports natively.

Wired article has since been updated:

Quote
Microsoft called Wired after this story was originally published to say that the company did have a plan for used games, and that further details were forthcoming.

Well, that's reassuring. A "plan?" This could hardly be more black and white; either you can play used games without any additional fee, which is how the concept of used games has been defined for every previous gaming platform that uses physical media, or you can't.

They might let you deactivate a game from your account. (for a fee)

Or transfer an activation to another users account. (again, for a fee)

Gamestop started buying online passes and including them with used copies of games. They'll do the same thing here by eating activation transfer licenses.

In other words, MS/publishers won't kill used games, just make it so they get their cut from any license transfer.

Gamestop will not suffer from this in the slightest.

They will happily print "secondary use fee" activation codes for you right from the register, just like they already do for online passes, and take their cut from it.

For the thousandth time - despite all the noise, none of these companies really have it out for Gamestop.  The Gamestop corporation is a business partner which sells new consoles, accessories, and games for them.

You know who doesn't sell new product for them? You. If it weren't for you trading in or selling your games, the secondary market wouldn't exist. If it weren't for you loaning out your games to all your goodtime buddies, everyone would have to buy their own copies. You're the reason they don't get their cut, so all these plans are, and always have been, about getting that cut from you. Never forget that. Gamestop is going to roll right along, and it will cost them nothing. It's only going to cost you.

By some accounts, game activations are automatically transferred for free to whoever uses the disc, though there's a one-activation-at-a-time limit. That seems to directly contradict Wired, though.

MS should delete achievements if you trade in a game.

Unless you pay 10 bucks extra of course when someone else activates that disc.

Official comment from MS, which unsurprisingly clears absolutely nothing up:

Quote
UPDATE 4: This is the official line from Microsoft: "We are designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games. We’ll have more details to share later." Microsoft representatives are not clarifying whether a fee will need to be played to play pre=owned games, or how much that fee will be.

The problem with deactivation is...that it doesn't work for used games/gamefly.  How are you going to check that someone deactivated their copy at home?  I guess gamestop could put the disc in and try to install and run it before buying it from the person, but gamefly/redbox?  Definitely gonna have problems.

ONLINE PASS FEE IS THE COST OF THE WHOLE GAME

You'll have to pay a fee—and not just some sort of activation fee, but the actual price of that game—in order to use a game's code on a friend's account. Think of it like a new game, Harrison says.

"The bits that are on that disc, you can give it to your friend and they can install it on an Xbox One," he said. "They would then have to purchase the right to play that game through Xbox Live."

"They would be paying the same price we paid, or less?" we asked.

"Let’s assume it’s a new game, so the answer is yes, it will be the same price," Harrison said.

lol, that aint no "fee". Whats even the point of the system then? To trick buyers before they get burned and ditch your system entirely?
