Fantasy name-itis.

My name is B'dark Illiaquestorius Gladatoniorest'avar the 19th

but you can call me Al

noun-itis

B'dark Illiaquestorious, we must find the spiralicaliesse before the moonsphere goes al'tieneour and transforms into Glorialistana crystals or some shit.

I still have no idea what the XIII characters are talking about half the time.  XII is bad about that too, since they have that weird accent/dialect thing going on.

14 looks incredible. Too bad it's an MMO.

and an unprecedented attempt at reviving a completely disastrous failure of an MMO, years after the fact

i appreciate the hustle they've put in, but i can't imagine this is going to go well at all

Seems like they've added 200% more waifus, with new glasses girls today.   Lots of gushing over the characters and such.

You have to wonder if F2P but with paid DLC customization options (with 1000s of options available) would do better than sub model

Possibly.

I'm sure Square is making FF14 pay2play for now to help recoup expenses for basically remaking the whole game.  There will probably be a F2P switch within 12 to 18 months of launch.

I'm sorry guys but that is the first time I've been wowed by FF visuals since forever. FFXII and FFFXIII looked good. Great even. But this impressed me more than when I saw FFVII the first time. The sense of scale in that final Leviathan shot in the game play trailer? Holy shit.

More than that, the art doesn't look like the dog shit in XIII. On every board I read people are saying they see stuff from their favorite FF. "Holy shit, VI vibes!" "This art reminds me of ViI." Meanwhile people even think the art reminds them somewhat of IX and XII due to the architecture. I personally am reminded of VIII. I find it fascinating they've done this. It is like a culmination of all FF art to this point. It has pizazz and cool and its pretty too.

I see people bitching it is an action rpg and it is a DMC clone. I fart on them. Look at that battle trailer. FF is starting to lose a hold on players and has less name power than it did in the past especially after XIII and 14. This game is what FF needs to be a household name again.

If you followed my posts over the years you'd remember how I thought FFXIII looked absolutely boring in trailers. I even argued with friends on Square fan site I visit over the art many times. I thought it looked uninspired and boring. I watch that FFXV trailer and I'm the complete fucking opposite. I WANT TO PLAY IT NOW due to the actual product and what it is rather than out of obligation due to name power. I haven't said that about an FF product in over ten years.
Whatever you may have felt about XIII's character design, its setting design was absolutely fucking phenomenal and you'd be goddamn blind to disagree. One look at the Gapra Whitewood and shut the fuck up.

The settings are fine. They look neat. But that's really it. The game doesn't feel like an actual world so much as a series of dungeons. XII fares better, but even it lacks the visual panache of that FFXV gameplay video with Leviathan raging across the city. That's psx era FF visuals without the fmv. I think you missed my point entirely. I didn't say FFXIII didn't have good art - it certainly had decent art - but it wasn't memorable or anything that made me drop my jaw. The last FF to do that was FFX.

That FFXV video however, is like Alexander vs Bahamut in real time, without fmv. Final Fantasy with memorable visuals is back it seems - it only took 12 years.

Speaking of which, it's great seeing Leviathan in general. Haven't seen him in a single player FF game since FFIX. It really makes me happy and frustrated it took us damn near 12 years to see classic FF summons again. Fuck FFXIII incarnations. The more I watch, the more FFXV just excites my inner teen-self. I was a junior/senior in High School when FFXII was announced. I have been waiting for a new sp 3d FF with traditional FF lore and trappings for years. I can't contain my excitement.

I don't think any of them are really memorable except Lake Bresha. Palumpolum is just a regular old city. Palamecia, I have no clue what that even is. Is Eden the final dungeon? See? I don't even know what these places are, much less remember what they look like. For a Final Fantasy, that's a problem.

Gapra Whitewood is the worst looking area in the game. Yes even Vile Peaks look better.

For best art. & design areas you have:

- Palumpolum
- Lake Bresha
- Palamecia
- Eden

All are better looking and more memorable than Gapra.
No way. The Gapra Whitewood is a fucking gorgeous crystalline forest in the vein of Macalania Woods in FFX. Easily my favorite area in the game.

So gorgeous

and how are these places even connected? I had no sense of the world.  I agree it's a problem, made it feel like I was playing long, boring levels, rather than being on a quest.

I suppose if I watched cutscenes I would know how it all fit together but in past final fantasies, the transitions between regions were done in game, which was fun.  Always loved discovering the next area.

What is the history of the locations? What do people do there? What are interesting lore?

CHECK THE DATALOG TO FIND OUT.

When you play FFX they disclose the history of every single location. Why Luca's blitzball arena is so popular and why blitzball is such an old standby. Why the Mi'ihen Highroad is named the way it is. When you go to Macalania and see those crystals, they tell you what that shit is and the significance. Crossing the ford on Shoo'pufs? Here's a cute story of Yuna jumping the water and making Kimahri lose his shit.

I remember all of this and I find it the backbone of every single story based FF.

For a story based FF, FFXIII really fails HARD at actually making its world interesting. The only good thing I can say about it is that the battle system is fun.

FF13 was the first FF I played all the way through since FF6 ages ago. I liked the more action oriented combat and job setups.

Can't say much for the plot but that's not usually why I play games.

I don't really play them for story or plot. But when I play an rpg, I like to play in a place that felt like it always existed. For me it is a prerequisite for any great rpg. Even gameplay oriented ones. I have to feel like I belong in your world. You can convey this by sidequests, world building via story, even gameplay systems. Whatever. FFXIII barely passes in any of these categories for me.

Never owned a SNES or PSX, and if I played the NES games they were probably too complicated for my younger self and didn't leave any kind of impression on me. So I'm like Ralx and started with X when it came out. Played all the ones since .Went back to play the 2 on the SNES emulators. Haven't touched the PSX ones, although I have a couple purchased on PSN. doubt I'll ever play them

I play them mainly for the battle system and stats. Still bummed at the near-death state of turn-based JRPGs on consoles.

I play them for battles, NUMBERS, customization, fun mechanics, exploration and side quests. The settings and characters are a big thing for me as well.

I don't play FF exclusively for battle system because usually the battle system is pretty damn simplistic and repetitive, but it delivers on about everything else.

After FFXIII, do we really want more female main characters? That's three FF's in a row starring a female character. The fact that the main cast is all male is actually refreshing because of that now. More than that, Stella seems to be a big part of the story, so I think that point is moot. And it's not really a foreign idea that a crowned prince of a country in a world where numerous nations are being attacked would be surrounded by males.

it was more of a joke aimed at kotak than anything else,

if i had to complain at FFXV cast rather than worrying about having female character or not i'd say the problem is that it sort of looks too homogeneous,i especialy hate this guy for being the main character but blonde

I like the team, I really like Nomura as a game designer/producer/director, but otherwise I agree with the stuff you said and the game could go either way.  Hopefully they keep showing footage all year (like the world map, vehicles, etc...) to prove there's actually a good meaty game behind all the curtains.

I'm being optimistic mainly because I haven't been burnt by Nomura in a long time.  Even Dissidia which had like the worst goddamn story and cutscenes...had really deep, fun, and creative gameplay.  Loved Crisis Core, Loved TWEWY, loved most of the KH games.  Even Advent Children: DC wasn't bad for an FF movie.

Not just talking about you, Himu.  Seeing lots of people getting their hopes up awful high for a game with a highly troubled development from an iffy team with literally no experience in the last seven years.  This game should be met with the absolute highest skepticism, slick trailers or not.

not to mention that it will be at least another year before it gets released and that you have to buy a 400$ console to play it

I am looking forward to FFXIII despite my hesitation. I am a big fan of FFX and FFX-2. Having the same team work on this game seems great, and I SHOULD be excited. But after that trailer, which looked straight out of Advent Children, I've taken FFXIII a lot less seroiusly.

I hope they prove me wrong, and I really hope it's better than I am expecting it to be.

Really? The character interaction in FFXV gameplay trailer has me interested on these guys and I have no clue who the fuck they are.

When blonde guy pushes Noctis back after saving him, and they high five in the middle of battle, I really liked that. The characters actually feel like they have personalities beyond animu flavor of the week ideology we got in FF13 and that's based off of a five second clip.

I like the original Kingdom Hearts' story. it was simple and to the point, and well directed. It's the sequels I have an issue with in terms of story, but when you're dealing with a franchise that has an amalgam of Disney characters in it...I can't really blame him for the direction the franchise went.

Oh dear, you think this is going to beyond anime of the week crap?  Are you familiar with this guy, this Tetsuya Nomura?

I didn't say it was beyond it. It's anime, but it's the type of anime I find appealing.

Nojima makes cool stories full of interesting, likeable characters,  plot twists, emotional moments, and interesting worlds.  FFX & Crisis Core were really good (not counting the CC Genesis stuff) and probably have some of the most powerful moments in videogame writing with their endings.  He also did a good job with Last Ranker and a number of other rpgs.  He did good with KH1, and KH2 was interesting but ultimately failed.  But other than KH2 he's usually a good writer.

Toriyama is total shit.  He can write characters but he can't write a story for the life of him.  Jesus, after 3rd Birthday he should have been expelled from SE.

Also say what you want about Nojima but I just like how he handles world building and having you invested in characters.

Nojima makes cool stories full of interesting, likeable characters,  plot twists, emotional moments, and interesting worlds.  FFX & Crisis Core were really good (not counting the CC Genesis stuff) and probably have some of the most powerful moments in videogame writing with their endings.  The characters are likeable and the worlds interesting.  He also did a good job with Last Ranker and a number of other rpgs.  He did good with KH1, and KH2 was interesting but ultimately failed.  But other than KH2 he's usually a good writer.

FFX ending is really powerful. I'm with Rahx. That made me shed a tear.

I've only man tears 3 times in all of gaming:  FFX ending, Crisis Core ending, MGS3 ending.  Maybe Xenogears a little when I think back on the whole plot and how depressing and in the end satisfying it is, but I don't think any moments in XS/XG/XB were ever man tear worthy.

Nojima has some duds you're right. But I think he has some great stuff under hid belt, notably FFX.

i think, as you said, he's very good at creating fairly coherent worlds, and i do appreciate that.  but he really seems to have poor understanding of how real human beings interact with each other, and he loooooooves distinguished mentally-challenged plot twists.  he's also really bad for losing the thread and going up his own ass.

You're right. But I think he's been somewhat grounded since ffx. Ffcc didn't have much bad stuff. It was really only Genesis that was bad and I'm not sure how much of that was Gackts influence.

Also I like a cool interesting world more than a perfect plot. I also think Nojima is the best when it cones to crafting characters you love. Bad plot twists, warts and all. He's not perfect but for the most part I love his style. He's inspired I think. And knows how to draw you in.
