I knew that boat speed thing was new but didn't want to get excited cause I thought maybe the original had it.

To me, the biggest problem with Nintendo right now can be highlighted by the single example of Donkey Kong Country. X might end up fitting the bill, but if there was one company that could make something that isn't in Nintendo's wheelhouse and make it look surprisingly good for the hardware, it was Retro. But what are they doing instead? Another fucking Donkey Kong game. Granted, I'm sure it'll be a very good 2D platformer, but I don't think anyone's looking at the lineup for the Wii U going "you know what this console needs? More platformers."

Bingo. By far the biggest disappointment for me.

Wow. Color me impressed. Granted, sure the Wii-U is powerful enough to achieve such a thing without much issue, but this is Nintendo we're talking about so I'm pleasantly surprised.

I feel like the greatest problem is Nintendo is short by one or two dev teams and have been since Rare feel apart.  They managed to stumble by the GC era with SK and having sega do F-zero but they really shouldn't need to be having retro do something like this DK just so they can get more games out there.

Either A) Nintendo still doesn't trust their westerns to do anything, or B) more talent has left Retro than we have realized, or C) Nintendo realized their troubled state ages ago and decided they needed Retro's game this holiday even if it meant making more Donkey Kong.

It's probably all 3.

True.  Nintendo has been pretty good at knowing when devs go bad.  They tossed out Rare and SK at good times.

In all likelihood, whatever dungeons were remaining went to followup Zelda games. You don't think Nintendo's just gonna sit on these dungeons for like a decade in the hopes of adding it onto a remake do you?

IIRC, Miyamoto or Iwata said that Nintendo was hiring outside developers who had experience doing HD games to teach their  own employees.

they also said they were adding new buildings/space for extra development. last year

I wouldn't say Retro has gone bad. Nintendo's just unwilling or unable to expend the time/resources to keep them as a high quality one. They needed a title too badly this holiday to let them work on anything else. And there's no way Retro has spent 3 years on Donkey Kong Country 2 (..5?) unless they had a previous project or two that got cancelled. I imagine Nintendo has greatly downplayed  how much outsourcing they had Retro do on titles like Mario Kart 7 (and 8?). And its the same with the rest of their western devs too.

Its like Nintendo wants (needs) to move to an Ubisoft style of global development, but is unwilling to sacrifice the developer vision to do so.

I've played though WW about 6 times, I never once played it and thought "boy, I wish there were more dungeons". That's the kind of shit that made me get tired of SS at the end. "Fuck, another dungeon?"

They just need to space out that triforce hunt so your not looking for 6-7 of them consecutively. Plus do away with the need to grind for cash to pay off Tingle to translate maps.

The last donkey kong was retro's largest seller ever, and I'm not convinced that Nintendo has any ideas as groundbreaking as CoD4 was to rope in a new crowd of consumers.  Realistically, if we were talking about retro being put to task of making the console relevant, it would be developing something like Wii Sports ala what Rare has been marginalized to these days.

It's just not what the console needs right now. It's not a system seller.

So? It looks amazing and will probably be one of the best platformers of the past five years. DKCR was amazing but there's lots of room for expansion and improvement, which this game looks to be making.

Further, it's a crowded genre.

GTFO. Crowded my ass. This game is crowded like PC adventure games are crowded. I mean sure, TellTale is cranking them out regularly but it's still underserved.

Donkey Kong Country is not the Retro game I wanted Nintendo to have as their flagship title to compete against new hardware launches.

There we go.

"Waaaaaaaaaah I didn't get the grimdark Retro game I wanted!"

Metroid Prime would be the easy choice there for me.

I'm not necessarily speaking about the best move just in terms of Retro selling software in as much as I think they could have been put to quelling some of the hardware concerns. I think if anything was going to make this console not look outdated compared to the Xbox One and PS4 this holiday season, there was hope that it would be Retro's mystery project. Maybe it wouldn't have sold as well as Donkey Kong Country, but I honestly think the Retro could have done more good for the platform's image with something like a Metroid Prime 4. As is, all they can hang their hat on is "remember the nice things the guy from Criterion said about the system" and "hey, X will come out sometime next year."

Uuuh so its ok to makes jokes about someones racial background (or sexual preferencae) but not about their relationship mishaps? that would never stand in a court of law.

Being Polish is a race?  :teehee

A race to the bottom, apparently.  :(
Yeah but you're Canadian as well so we already know you won.

Andy, I don't think the majority of people (here and elsewhere) are upset about DKC2 existing, just that Retro is behind it. That's even more justified considering all the rumors and speculations... that were admittedly mostly made up.

Retro is basically a coding branch at this point akin to Monster games and Next Level games.  The original creative directors have moved on, and maybe now people will realise that Retro's role is to do what they're overseers command with a lot of supervision.

The same Next Level that just made 3DS GOTY contender Luigi's Mansion?

:lol

It's funny cause it's serious.

I mean MH3U is better, but I can see a lot of people calling LM2 this year's best 3DS game.

smash bros needs more characters that don't naturally translate to fighting game characters. megaman is easy, he comes from an action game where he has all sorts of attacks. Wii Fit Trainer (WFT) uses yoga poses as a martial art. Animal Crossing Villager digs for fossils and hits people's toes in the process and he pockets projectiles to help pay off his mortgage to Nook. Standing between those two Megaman looks like a desperate halfwit.

Further, it's a crowded genre.

GTFO. Crowded my ass. This game is crowded like PC adventure games are crowded. I mean sure, TellTale is cranking them out regularly but it's still underserved.

Not on the Wii U it isn't.

Because first person shooters aren't crowded? ::) ::) ::)

On the Wii U, particularly going forward? No. It's not crowded at all. Further, it's not like Metroid is supposed to be another Call of Duty/Halo type game.

Look on the bright side. Retro ISNT making Eternal Darkness or fucking STARTROPICS.

I would have loved a Retro ED.  ED had a great concept with shitty execution.

X: are you stupid or just n**** f**
T: uuh you cant get laid
Judge: Wow Y you're so going to jail

NEVER EVER

Even though I still think you should fight pole jokes with canuck jokes, a general "you can't get laid" joke is more appropriate than "digging stuff from the relationship thread to make you look like an idiot." Don't be so contemptuous, breh. That's the opposite of joking around.

Maybe I would be more cool about it if it wasn't the same "joke" every single time. Hur dur I get it.

90% of this board is contemptuous towards me all the time, don't matter usually cause I'm just dicking around

But if you call me an idiot or try some racial slur you could get called out on your own things, so unless you want that better stick to the topic at hand.

If you play it ad hominem, don't be shocked if you get it back.
