Wait for the Nexus 5, should be revealed in two weeks and released before the end of the month.

Otherwise, get a Nexus 4.

Samsung phones are usually the shittiest feeling ones. Uber cheap plastic and no design direction whatsoever. (The Nexus 4 is made by LG and generally feels very nice and light, although the premium-feeling glass back has its drawbacks.)

HTC and Sony generally make the highest-quality feeling phones.

The Nexus 5 is supposedly based on the LG G2, which is an absolute specs monster (besting everything else in speed and battery life, including the S4 and HTC One) but LG majorly crapped it up:

Quote
(Image removed from quote.)

LG lets you tweak the system bar as well. You can change the button order and even add a shortcut to open the notification panel or open LG's QuickMemo app. You can switch between flat white, flat black, gradient white, and gradient black. The most "normal" and most popular option would probably be flat black, but on the Verizon version, that has been replaced with a fluffy, pink, quilted option. (At times, it feels like they are almost actively trolling their customer base.)
...

(Image removed from quote.)

The other thing they messed up is the keyboard number pad, which pops up in forms that flag a field as "numbers only." They completely omitted the decimal point, comma, and minus sign (all often necessary when entering numbers). Typing "16.94" into this field with LG's keyboard is just impossible. You'd have to switch to another keyboard. And that's the best thing to keep in mind here; the LG keyboard can be (and will need to be) replaced.

The shell of the G2 is also shitty Samsung-grade shiny plastic and has some bizarre design choices (volume rocker sticking out the back... lol.)

So if you wait for the Nexus 5, you'll get the G2 specs in a high quality body and stock Android for around $300-450 unlocked (price TBD.) Win-win-win-win.

This.  If you're going to be getting Android anything, get the pure android experience and go for a Nexus product.

You'll probably have to wait 3 weeks or so for the Nexus 5 to come out, and I think the Nexus 4 is sold out everywhere.  But unless you have to have a new phone today/tomorrow, it's worth it to wait.

Wait until the week of Black Friday as you can get the best deals then (if you're planning to sign a contract).

For an unlocked phone, the Nexus 4 or 5 will probably have the most value and high range specs.

If you DO have to get a new phone immediately and can't wait for Nexus 5, look into Moto X.  Republic (super cheap plans) are offering them and they're pretty good phones.

im wondering this as well. i dont see a whole lot of difference between a nexus and a samsung. my note 2 had some bloatware that was easily disabled, and it otherwise looks and runs nearly identical to a n4 as far as i can see

Why should I go nexus 5 over galaxy 4?

Galaxy S4 will be six months old by the time the N5 hits. The G2, which the N5 will be based on, performs better than the S4 even with all the LG bloatware.

Imagine it with leaner, stock Android and the improvements 4.4 will have out of the box, and the N5 will obviously be better from a specs perspective. For instance, here's a sheet that show's the difference between the stock version of the S4 ("Google Play Edition") and the TouchWiz-infected version:

"Throw another launcher on it!" Lol, yeah. Bloat it up even more.

The G2 also has one of the best batteries around.

I should mention that current rumors have the N5's battery cut down to 2300 mAh from the G2's 3000 mAh, but I think that it'll still compare favorably due to the power efficient CPU and software optimizations in stock Android.

Finally, the biggest difference will be price. Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition is $649 unlocked, while the Nexus 5 will be between $350 and $450.

...which are hidden when it needs to go away and can be changed contextually as the situation demands it. ::)

Hardware buttons blow. I can't wait until Android 5.0 does something radically different with the navigation and all the phones with hardware buttons have to have 1/4" of their screen boilerplated to be backwards compatible, like this shit:

Eel is dead on with the software buttons. My Nexus 4 drove me fucking nuts when using it in landscape mode...ugly as fuck implementation...the disappear and fucking dots appear in their place? why?

And a big LULZ at the "premium glass back" on the 4.....it would break if you looked at it funny costing a goddam arm and a leg to fix.

Andrex you might love the pure Android experience (I like it quite a bit) but it has a huge share of problems.

That being said if the Nexus 5 fixes all the bullshit problems with the 4 and comes in at the same price or close its a no brainer.

No but they *could* go away in a future release. With hardware buttons you're stuck with that shit for life.

It's also easier to do stuff like Google Now, etc. with soft buttons. Just an all around better implementation for navigation.

I don't have one precisely because the bamboo is taking forever. :fbm It sounds like the N5 will trounce it so I'm going to get that, but if you're on Verizon it's easily your best options (especially whenever they finally get Moto Maker...)

Will be great when Moto Maker hits Verizon. Hopefully all the trouble setting it up is a one-time deal so like the X2 will be able to launch with it on all four carriers.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/6/4808670/nexus-5-spec-leak-reveals-phone-is-almost-identical-to-lgs-g2

Quote
What appears to be an internal repair manual for Google’s upcoming Nexus 5 flagship phone reveals pretty much everything there is to know about the device, filling in what blanks remain after an LG FCC filing went public last month. The draft document was leaked to Android Police, and between the schematics and disassembly instructions it contains a comprehensive list of the device’s specs. The 4.95-inch 1080p IPS LCD display is confirmed, as is LTE compatibility and the 2,300mAh battery. The document also reveals that the phone will have a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM, along with an 8-megapixel rear camera, Qi wireless charging, and NFC.

Keeping with tradition, the new phone is more or less spec-for-spec identical with LG’s G2, save for the lower-resolution 8-megapixel camera on the Nexus 5, a slightly smaller screen, and a smaller battery. We thought that LG's flagship performed incredibly well but would have been better without the excessive software flourishes, awkward button placement, and lackluster case materials, so the idea of a redesigned G2 running stock Android is incredibly intriguing. So far, there's no official word on a Nexus 5 announcement, but with the Nexus 4 getting a late-October release last year, we wouldn't be surprised to see Google stick to the same timeframe this time around.

With that in mind, we are told that the 16GB LG Nexus 5 will feature a 2300mAh battery and will be priced lock, stock and barrel for $299. The 32GB LG Nexus 5 will be powered by a 3000mAh cell and will be priced at $399. The Google Nexus 4 was $299 for the 8GB unlocked model when first launched, while the 16GB model was $349. Both of those units carried a 2100mAh cell.

As for price, we are left with a much higher cost than previously reported. At 44,600 and 49,800 yen respectively for the 16 and 32GB models, it’s a bit higher than the $299/399 split we heard previously. The current exchange rate would put those devices at $460 and $513. We should note that devices which make their way to other markets don’t always carry a similar price point to the ones we see stateside.

Happily, we see that the different battery sizes are there, with both 2300 and 3000mAh batteries listed.

Hmm that's a touch choice... If I had unlimited data I'd probably get the Moto X when Moto Maker hits and then hope that next year the new N5 is finally on Verizon... or Moto puts out an equally good X successor.

Does anyone know which LTE bands the Nexus 5 will run on? The Nexus 4 ran unofficially on band 4, which Verizon is apparently using only for data right now. So you'd have a nexus 4/5 as a mobile hotspot only until VoLTE gets rolled out on band 4. At that point, it'd be feasible to use for voice as well. Not sure when Verizon is actually going to activate voice over band 4, though.

The D820 also features 7-band LTE, some of which are compatible with AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint (bands 2/4/5/17/25/26/41), CDMA / EVDO rev A, pentaband DC-HSPA+ and quadband GSM / EDGE, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and dual-band 802.11 b/g/n/ac. That's an amazingly healthy list of specs for your usual FCC submission, and the list of LTE bands is quite stunning as well.

Whenever Verizon does VoLTE it might be compatible but it would still need to be certified by Verizon (like the recent Nexus 7 LTE snafu) which seems unlikely.

Just got the HTC One a few weeks ago.  Love it with the exception of one thing: it won't connect to my PC as an external hd.  Anyone find a solution to this?  Google search tells me it's a common issue.  As I stated in a thread before, it's important for me as I use my phone's camera for work - the fact that it does not have removable memory wasn't an issue until I found out about this. :|

3000 mAh

32 GB

I might sell my N4 for this if everything pans out.
