Anyhow this game is free now. Dev claims it's Borderlands mixed with Metal Slug. Hopefully it's not as shit as Borderlands, and hopefully it's half as good as a Metal Slug game.

It's pretty shitty as a shooter. Maybe your response to that is "Well DUH it's an RPG not a shooter", but it still looks and controls just like a modern FPS. Yet it has the gun balance, encounter design, and enemy behavior of a mediocre shooter from the PS1 era, not to mention a quest system every bit as shallow and mindless as any low-rent MMO out there.

I've tried and tried to get into the series, but ultimately it just leaves me wanting. I'm tempted by this sale, but even if I bro-op with some fellow Boritos I don't think I can look past my issues with the core gameplay.

It's still fun and addicting of course, but you can't say its that well designed or anything. And the writing. Good god the writing. Handsome Jack is good, but the rest of the jokes are based on 5 year old unfunny memes and have been focus grouped by bottom feeding "Redditors". The 3d text overlay scenes where they introduce a new character make me want to smash my TV

So I played the first few levels last night. The game is... OK. Its really obvious they lifted the aesthetic (and even central conceit) of Borderlands so wholesale that it's almost a joke. It plays kinda like Gunstar Heroes, but way sloppier. Again, like Borderlands, the developers have clearly spent very little time in fine tuning (or even considering) gameplay and twitch challenge, in favor of grinding to get better stats, so you can tank the harder enemies. I wouldn't expect anything less from filthy gaijin.

Still, it's fun enough, and there's a shitload of items to collect so I'll 200 this with the quickness

Uneven is a pretty good adjective for this game. Played a 4 player match last night which was sooooo laggy. Got the cheev for highest score in a 4 player game so I'm happy.

All the enemies are the same, all the levels are the same, all the waves and encounters are the same. Thankfully you don't even need to beat all the levels for 200/200. Will grind this one out while drunk.

Reviewers who compared this to Hard Corps Uprising and Metal Slug could have been smoking PCP for all I know. I guess they are all used to on rails blockbuster handjobs and don't understand action games. I don't blame them. Society, society did that to them.

Meh. It's one thing to sell cheap used games, where only the reseller gets money, and another to buy from the digital storefront, where the publisher/dev get almost all the profit.

It's also great to have games on standby which play silently, without ever inserting a disc.

true; i just hate how a lot of digital content gets thrown up and then forgotten about by the publisher. like in tomb raiders' case you have the underworld expansions that both still sit at $10 each. i'm sure almost no one has bought either of of those in years, yet they still have those crazy prices. drop the price after a few years and get a few more sales; make it free after sales bottom out. i love that konami made the metal gear rising expansion dlcs free to boost sales - not saying everyone has to go THAT low, but a least consider a discount.

I very rarely see TR Anniversary discs in bargain bins here in NZ, and I've never seen it for less than $30NZ, so picking it up digitally for $10NZ is pretty good.

Yeah, that's pretty ass-y as well.

I forgot which title I was looking at, but the main title had been reduced in the digital storefront -- not a sale, just the standard price had been permanently reduced -- but all the DLC was still full price, and I thought "man, what the hell is going on here?" If there are studies showing that DLC doesn't sell, here's one reason why.

Yeah it is nuts that they still charge the 800MSP equivalent for crusty old old DLC for 7 year old games. The XBL store needs a pricing overhaul across many titles.

TR Anniversary is pure sex, effin incredible game. A real shame the franchise has been totally dumbed down to an auto platformer, with bollocks on rails push A to win rollercoaster scenes. I mean I still thoroughly enjoyed Tomb Raider 2013, but it wasn't a Tomb Raider game. Anniversary is classic TR, heavily exploration based, complex platforming and secrets, and real danger and challenge. Loving it too much. The nostalgia I have for the first game helps, too.

Hows TR Legend? I hear that's good, and it's also on sale.

Played through about half of Lara Croft GoL with a friend yesterday. Pretty fun co-op action game.

Sleeping Dogs is really great! Very well told crime drama story and fun Batman-style brawler combat.

As mentioned, sadly it's off the Games-for-Gold program as of Jan 16th; MS is offering 2 titles a month, changing the one on offer at the midpoint.

Sleeping Dogs was pretty near my GOTY for 2011. It's GTA Hong Kong, minus guns for about half of total playtime, and plus Batman Arkham Asylum brawling.

The only shame is, with S-E so dead-set on throwing all their western developers under the bus, a sequel to Sleepeh Dawgs looks unlikely.
