I was talking with a friend while watching the SuperBowl, and we both agreed that we can't wait until football can only be played by death row inmates, because then we can just drop all pretenses and shoot them full of EVERYTHING. Imagine an 8 foot halfback. Shit's gonna be glorious, brehs.

It probably already happened in that alternate reality where the XFL was successful

It's official, Calvin Johnson retired today. And in typical Calvin style: no press conference, no glitz or glamour. Walking away from the game so he can walk when he's 60 years old. My favorite football player and a great guy who did a lot for the city that will never be written about or advertised.

Thanks for the memories.

Initially I had hoped Johnson would ask to be released so he could play for a contender; if anyone deserves a ring it's him. But health>rings.

It's been said he could barely walk up stairs on Mondays during the season. I can't imagine being in my late 20s/early 30s and feeling like that.

I'm glad he's getting out before more damage. I just would have liked to have seen him get a ring.

Him and Stephen Jackson.

Shit, even without a ring it would've been nice to see him on a real contender and making a deep playoff run just once or twice, like Fitz.

To be fair we did make the playoffs with Tate in 2014 (his first year here). The infamous Cowboys game. Outside of that we only made the playoffs one other time during Johnson's years.

I've been surprised at some of the anger fans showed Johnson over the last couple weeks. People arguing he was holding the team hostage, ruining free agency, being selfish, etc. If anyone deserves some respect in this matter it's Johnson.

And let's not forget beloved Barry Sanders retired less than a week before training camp. IE months after free agency and after the draft. That was a dick move of the highest level. Johnson retired at a perfect time, like a professional.

I like it. We still likely need two more WRs though. One in the draft (not in first round). I want the first round pick to either be DL or OL.

The only surprise was Schwartz. Everyone knew that Alex Mack wasn't coming back and the Browns didn't want to overpay on Benjamin. Gipson is just a marginal player and not really worth mentioning.

The Schwartz is Browns stupidity again.

They offered him more than the Falcons but then rescinded the deal when they heard his number from a source and tried to match that.

Let me tell you something that is a shitty way to do business and it definitely tampering because they got his numbers from someone in the know. It happens way more than you think but typically never this obvious.

Have a baseball guy and a lawyer run your field show breh....at this point I would not be shocked if they put hot dog quality and supply under Hue Jackson at this point.

Ball Hawks don't grow on trees. The only thing that hampered him were injuries. Top 5 at his position if he has a strong run stuffer on his wing.

He'll be a pro bowler at least twice on that contract.

I want this to happen just to see PD have to deal with it

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/25526166/ex-lions-wr-tells-calvin-johnson-to-unretire-and-sign-with-the-patriots

I already said I would have liked to see him go to the Pats and win a ring. Seems highly unlikely he'd un-retire, but then again maybe a full year of recovery could give him the itch again. Even if that happened he wouldn't be able to join the Pats - he retired a Lion, he wouldn't be able to join another team unless the Lions gave up his contract. I remember the Packers blocking Favre's first attempt to join the Vikings.

BTW a coincidence: Johnson's agent also represented Favre  :doge

Not only that, trading up to presumably take a QB from what is basically a division II team that hasn't really played anyone of note. Who was also injured for much of last season.

Actually I think it's a blessing in disguise for my Clowns. Maybe now they'll do the right thing and grab Ramsey or Bosa.

Personally I'd Keep RGIII and McCown and maybe pick up Jones in the deep 2nd/3rd round at this point. Goff isn't a winner and Lynch is going to get kneecapped like his second game in.

You guys lost some major o-line depth in FA. Would you take Bosa or Ramsey over Tunsil (Ole Miss OT)? Dunno. The Lions are kind of in a similar situation where we need an OT badly...but if Bosa or Shaq Lawson drop to 16 I'd take them in a heartbeat. So I feel you lol.

I agree RG3 can work. But perhaps the other issue is that if you go with RG3 and don't draft a QB early, you gotta really really fix that o-line. Taking Bosa or Ramsey doesn't prevent you from doing that of course. This is a deep OL draft.

This is a deep draft for O line. I'd rather focus on a dominant defensive player or a skill position. Problem is this is perhaps the worst WR class in 10 years also.

Bernie Sanders Will Remain the True Democratic Front-Runner Until the FBI Finishes Its Investigation

Bernie Sanders is the only Democratic candidate for president not linked to an FBI investigation. This used to mean something in American politics, but those days are gone. Today, I’m viewed as delusional, by the same people who think smart politics and qualifications entail endless scandals, poor decision-making on everything from major foreign policy decisions to Wall Street speeches, and ongoing FBI investigations. In truth, the only delusion is believing that a candidate at risk of DOJ indictments, and facing political repercussions even without these indictments, would make a great president.

Draft tomorrow folks. It's that time of the year when the most desperate of fanbases pray for a savior. Let us break bread and talk about our squads.

Detroit Lions

Last season was somewhat of a predictable disaster. We lost most of our d-line to free agency, including a top 5 defensive tackle in Suh. Then our best LB (DeAndre Levy) missed the entire season due to a mysterious injury. And on the offensive side of the ball our o-line imploded with injuries and shit play. Thankfully we fired our offensive coordinator, shitcanned his zone blocking scheme, and are back to playing power. The line improved in the last few games.

Needs (1st Round)

1. D-Line or O-Line

I really want a premier d-line. Ziggy Ansah is one of the best DEs in the league and had a great season last year for us. Of course I'm salivating at the possibility of getting Shaq Lawson. But I'd probably take a DT over a DE, given how weak our DTs are. Don't care if it's one of the DTs from Alabama or Sheldon Rankins...there's a lot of depth and I'll be happy with any of them.

In terms of the o-line I'm not really well versed enough on any of the tackles. Saw Jack Conklin play a lot at MSU and if he's still there at 16 I'd be fine with that, but I see lots of Lions bloggers who aren't sold on him. Lots of people don't seem to like Taylor Decker (OSU) either. Perhaps getting an o-lineman in the second round would make more sense, dunno.

Depth (2nd-7th round)

O-line or d-line depending on what we do in the 1st round. Definitely need depth at LB. Getting a DE in the second round would be cool, especially if the guy from MSU is still on the board. Definitely need a safety as well.

In terms of WRs I'd love to get Aaron Burbridge in a later round. He'd be amazing in our offense; great hands, YAC monster.
