any playful criticism I aim toward PC gaming is from a place of pure love. I love my genre hybrid euro-jank games. I love my WRPGs, it will always be my favorite genre regardless of how played out the boilerplate themes get. I love being a pretentious fuck and being way too wrapped up in indie games that don't have one-tenth the depth we all pretend they do. I love overly ambitious, impossible to play 4x games; I love grand strategy games that are only enjoyable if you actively avoid every game breaking tactic available; and I love dumb broken internet culture fad games like Goat Simulator and Twitch Plays Pokemon that everyone pretends is super fun and communal and ~important~ but really is a way for the internet to jerk off to its own self image.

Straight from the heart, I love it at all. There's just a certain point where you have to revel in how awful the things you love are from an outside looking in perspective. PC gaming is funny as fuck when you look at the trends and subtrends it spawns. I think a lot of people that reduce PC gaming down to those elements and criticize it are coming a similar place. Just being aware of what's up.

I mostly played PC games when I was a preteen all the way up to high school until I got a laptop for university.  It was some of the best shit ever: tons of WRPGs with traditional stat distributions or WRPGs that added mechanics for other computer RPGs to take advantage of, some of the best SRPGs and RTSes out there (esp. with a KB+mouse setup), some neat platformers, etc.  I could play older games if I wanted to and explore what comprised of the RPG genre's roots and where some mechanics came from and where the splits happened.

When I finish school, I'm probably going to get a gaming PC or laptop or something if I can afford it a few months post-graduation.  I really should have done that a long time ago, to be honest.  I feel like I've been missing out on a lot and I'm thankful that my laptop can at least run Divinity.

Before the first Halo I always thought consoles would never even get close to the PC.

Sure there were games like Perfect Dark but still not even close........

Samey enemies, smaller levels and removed the great skyboxes the games are famous for.

Of these by far the worst is the loss of great big open areas. Like we needed more corridor shooters. Fuckers.

But there were also a lot of people playing MMO's and developers attempting them, and there continued to be till around 2008ish. Shitty DRM policies and piracy laid waste to the platform. Ports were also quite bad/nonexistent, and consoles/handhelds were teeming with amazing content. Not to mention that PC gaming felt quite expensive in comparison to now, where almost any laptop you cop is game ready.
