John Carter shouldn't count either. There may be some cave of John Carter fanboys somewhere, but ultimately that film was a traditional summer blockbuster - big hunky guy fighting shit. Meanwhile Scott Pilgrim has a rather diverse fanbase from what I've read, but despite a good cast it couldn't garner a diverse audience for whatever reason.
I thought GOTG would bomb because it features a cast that's half CGI or in heavy makeup, in a cheesy looking sci fi setting based on a comic no one knows about except the most hardcore of Hot Pockets nerds. Marvel did a great job making it funny/witty apparently, and making it entertaining. I haven't seen it (and have no intention to. Still haven't even seen Avengers) but all the word of mouth I've observed has been positive. Marvel is a master at this shit, I guess.
