here's my beef: if it were a male dev fucking a female journalist, this story wouldn't be focusing on the dev, it would be focusing on the journalist.  it's focusing on the dev here because the dev is a woman.  you might not feel that way, but i feel pretty confident in that.

Yeah I was about to say that if that's what they want then seem to fight it at every turn. Crying constantly about those critzing the clear sociol problems games have as they go through thier growing pains. Which at the end all can be summed up as "you're trying to destroy my all boys club". Because whenever these people criticize thier hobby, they feel the need to find anything they can to discredit them.

I mean there's no doubt some of the countless articles written on this subject aren't flawless. Some of the shots taken at Japanese games are cheap and overdone. Yet, it's not like this issue is some made up thing and video games are completely innocent. Look at all the white guy protags or games where I can touch a girls skirt as she pleads me to do it. It's an issue thats always been there and while some of these gamers will attempt to say "oh these gamers are johnny come  latelies". I very much doubt a lot of the women or men who have certain problems with games just started playing video games in thier mid 20s just because. Yeah thats why they have fond memories of Final Fantasy VII/VIII and wish there were some games that took them into  consideration.

I will say as someone who started playing games as a kid it's really annoying to see this "women are poseurs, only play games for attention, new to our hobby." No we're fucking not. We just don't make it our whole identity and we sure as shit didn't broadcast it precisely because of all the tears. As a tomboy I made boys cry all of the time because "losing to girls" was the worst shit. As I got older I just played with pseudonyms and shit and because "gaming" wasn't the first fucking thing out of my mouth I guess people assumed I didn't do it because: GIRL.

Problem with gamers is they self identify as gamers and tend to defend whatever bullshit it is they think is attacking 'gamers' be that valid or invalid criticism same problem with weaboo/otaku/or whatever anime nerds call themselves these days. I love anime, but I don't let it define me, it's just hobby that takes up a slice in the me pie.

People get too invested in defending labels and groupings that shouldn't really matter, on all sides of the argument.

Guys are more sensitive to girls getting into gaming and identifying as gamers, but they may be the same way towards males that ostracized them in the past. I just don't have enough experience to say if that were so or not.


I do feel that some person playing mobile games is not in the same culture as you would find here or in GAF in regards to 'being a gamer'. Candy Crush is more a ipad/tech sub-culture than a part of gamer subculture.

Wife has performed some epic take downs - nothing funnier when someone tries to talk sh1t about her "fake gaming" which, granted, doesn't happen often seeing as most in our circle know her.

The best part of it is she doesn't get angry - she just dismantles. Methodically. With knowledge.

joking aside - most people define themselves as "hardcore" or "a true gamer" and... well.. it's largely bollox. when challenged the definition of what makes someone hardcore shifts and it becomes a dickwaving competition. "oh, I bet you've never even heard of <obscure game>" "oh i bet you can't beat my score on <game>" "i had a <machine> when i was <age>!" etc etc. Yawn yawn yawn. I'm more inclined to side with those who simply don't give a f--k what anyone else thinks are the true hardcore. "I play Candy Crush - all day" pfff that's not real gaming! "oh? ... (back to candy crush)"

I'd stick playing Sensible Soccer exclusively as pretty hardcore - the fact you were out giving head at night just shows a lack of dedication to games. That's just time you should have been using to play games .

Sensi was good, but Sensible World of Soccer took it to an all new dimension of awesome.

We played it to death in our student house - all of us in the inter house league. We keep it going on and on , watching each other play and trying to psych each other out. When we played each other it was a complete event.

Many games came and went that we loved, but Sensi was ever present and meant the Amiga survived all the way through uni life.

And yeah - it's definitely a british thing i think.

Edit : oh god , yeah - one other thing that we had.... we had two joysticks. A Kempston Pro (the KING of joysticks) and a sort of Quickshot clone stick (pretty poor for sensi, used more for flight sims etc). To help simulate the rigours of real football, the house rule was that all away games had to be played on the Quickshot. Mayhem. Drama. Police Cars.

We used to have an alternate game which was : playing as Brazil, play vs. Crisp Flavours (worst team in the game)

First player to let a goal in loses - forfeit was always something low key like having to buy a couple of bottles of booze, but still. The tension this generated was epic. Even in a 5 min match you should put in a good 12 or so goals but everytime the ball pinged out and slowly bounced towards your goal .... <tension> you never quite knew when the goal keeper would let it bounce into the net.

From a European perspective you might eat 5 guys and say hmmm, this is a lot better than McDonald's and you would be correct. However here in Amurrrica a lot of people think of different styles of burgers. You might not have the same expectations for a fast food style burger that you would for a sit down diner burger or a gourmet one. A lot of people think 5 guys is just overpriced for what's basically a pub staple, and that you can find better in that style for that same price from a local joint.
