Excuse for getting married?  Dude made Gurren Lagann, so I doubt it was hard to find someone.  TTGL fangirls are damn vicious.

gurren lagann fans are on the evangelion group for worst damn fans in anime.

Is this a universe where Inuyasha doesn't exist?

id rather deal with hardcore inu yasha fangirls than the others

I went out and bought Xenoblade Chronicles at Gamestop yesterday and decided to emulate it on Dolphin instead of playing it on the Wii U. It raised quite a few questions; which I've been thinking about and have no answers for. What do you think GAF?

Is it wrong to emulate games on a system that is still sold by a company? Is Nintendo losing out on customers of the Wii U and Wii by people emulating games on Dolphin? We openly accept it here; but does it take away from hardware sales? We aren't there with PS3 and X360 but may be one day.

Still BS. I don't care if no one benefits from it other than the re-seller, you're not entitled to anything just because you want it. Other than that there are inherent problems with just stealing a copy of a game you're not entitled to even if it's not in a print run.

1) You're devaluing gaming in general. Sure there are free games out there too, but if you're playing something illegally you're spending time that you otherwise would likely be spending playing something else that would be getting revenue from you somehow. People claim that smartphone games are devaluing the $60 game, but if that argument is made, then you have to go for piracy too.

2) If you play an entire game through that you don't own and the publisher decides to re-release it through digital or otherwise you were essentially no better than someone who pirated a brand new game anyway.

Because someone who played a pirated, out of print game never buys the game when it finally comes in print.

He doesn't even limit it to pirating, just not owning it when you complete it, if you rent it the logic would apply. Or even say beat it on a Free Weekend like Steam recently offered with Dishonored and Borderlands 2.

Actually, you're right about the third one, I should have quoted that just because of the BUT THINK ABOUT THE AGGREGATE EFFECTS + STANDARD USED EXEMPTION:
Quote
3) If the game is still in print it's obviously BS, that shouldn't have to be said. Even buying a used copy is fine and somewhat benefits the publisher. Why? By purchasing a copy you're helping drive up the price of used copies (with your demand) which makes the new copy more tempting as the price gap closes. [obviously this has a insignificant effect when it's one person, but multiple people etc.

Last post of the night, coz I'm off to bed,
It's not a guess. I hate to pull out the "I am an economics major" card, but I am.

Retro games ROMs on the net are a fairly close substitute good to the real thing. If piracy suddenly cost $10, the demand for it's substitute would increase. If piracy ceased to exist, demand for the substitute good would increase. Assuming that the market is large enough, the demise of piracy would increase the demand (and hence the price) of the real thing.

There are two things you can actively contest in my above statements. 1 - That ROMs and physical games are not substitutes at all, 2 - extremely set in stone economic theory. I feel it's absurd to contest either, but take your pick.

Regarding the Football manager thing, I was wrong: I was remebering off the top of my head and confused 10 million with 10%, my bad. That doesn't stop the fact that if even half of 1.76% of people who pirate retro games would buy them, that game prices would hit their actual market value significantly above what it is now (in many cases)

Somebody asks what school he's taking his theories from: Keynesian, Chicago, etc. and he says he doesn't see why what University he attends matters but he'll PM if someone really wants to know.

Edit: that one guy pulls the economics major card, and all he's got is a substitute/complement discussion you get in Chapter 3 of Micro-Econ 1? I'm disappointed.
His entire argument seems to rest on the premise that there's no such thing as subjective value and that the $60 MSRP is where the supply/demand meets for everyone everywhere at all times. The idea that a pirate would simply not purchase anything or purchase less than $60 is not allowed, they're still spending the full $60 on gaming in his model no matter what because they likely will spend at least $60 on gaming at some point in their life.

And he just sorta casually dismisses Valve and their partner's experience on messing around with price points in different market conditions.

This is more what I was getting at with my first question. I own a Wii U and a Wii, zero people lost money there. But I still feel guilty because I feel it promotes a bad practice.

Say in 2 years a emulator comes out for X360 and I want to play Fable 3. I never bought a 360 and they likely will still be available at retail. I would feel wrong about buying a game and then emulating but not supporting Microsoft by buying the 360. I think a lot of people here skipped the Wii, or worse the Wii U which supports backwards compatiblity (way for the gaming community to slap backwards compatibility in the face), and still emulate Dolphin.

...

Can you elaborate? As an engineer I've always seen reverse engineering as an unethical practice, even behind a firewall. It's taking someone else's IP (instruction set, code architecture, etc) and rebuilding it and harming their business. That's why I'm so conflicted, I own the systems but feel guilty emulating them because it seems it could potentially be harming the company. Sure it's legal, but just feels wrong.
:dead

Do you think this guy has ever lamented the time Trogg reverse engineered Grok's anti-T-Rex self defense pointed stick?

False. The only thing that is required for diminishing returns is hardware. Ideally you'd like to be able to hold all other elements constant but taking the best example from the relevent timeframe is going to be a damn close estimate.
The idea of diminishing returns in gaming is that where a jump in power previously resulted in a certain improvement to visuals, the same jump in power results in less improvement in visuals today. People trying to put the idea of dev teams on this idea are fundamentally missing the point: The graphical returns are diminishing for the same increase in power: that's all that's implied. This comes from an Econ major.
Quote
More like: I don't understand economics and I don't value certain games at X price so other people shouldn't either.
Quote
A basic understanding of economics/markets will help you out with the OPs question more or less. However, it's true that people boasting some objective measure of quality are just as wrong.
Quote
I hope I've explained it in a manner so even you are able to understand it. Obviously I don't blame people for having a lack of understanding of economics, as many people don't study it, but I'm telling you, the world doesn't work like you think it does.
Quote
You don't seem to grasp the concept of the free market. You're not entitled to get Wind Waker HD at $50. NIntendo, having made the game, can put it on the market at whatever price they deem fit. If you value the game at that price or at a higher one: you'll buy it. Otherwise you won't.
Even if Wind Waker HD's sales are disasterous you prove nothing with this argument. "It should have been cheaper" based on what? How much you want it? How much other HD remakes are? If your argument is "it would have sold better at $40" I don't think many are disagreeing with you, but why stop there? It would have sold even better if they sold it for $5.
All you're really doing is telling people that you think they shouldn't buy a game, even if they value it higher than the asking price. If Nintendo priced the thing at $2000, I don't value WW HD that much and I wouldn't buy it. I wouldn't complain that I'm entitled to a cheaper game.

What annoys me more than mindless defense, is mindless attack with little grasp on basic economics. You're not some intellectual powerhouse swatting down the Nintendo faithful, you're making, dare I say it, "entitled" arguments to a good that is not a life nessecity.
Quote
Econ Major here.
Truth be told we can't use mathematics to show whether they're substitutes or not: There are too many variables. You use examples after the Vita Price cut but you assume that 3DS sales would have stayed constant if it were not for the price cut which is poor in itself. Basically: we can't say anything without some sort of control group which is very hard to do on a large scale like this.

As well as being the console that housed countless first iterations of popular series it brought back life to the industry.
(People pointing out that only America was struggling forget that without the USA market gaming would have remained a niche and therefore quality products would have been few and far between)
Quote
What do you mean? It's basic economics. If you were someone looking to be a producer of video games in the 1980s and you saw a landscape where games were selling outside of the US but not in the US you'd be less inclined to produce games then if the US itself was successful too.
Simple really.

olimario has done contributed way too much over the years to the misery of neogaf that he is untouchable by our standards.

if you want to contribute, feel free to.  :D

OA will reserve privilege of mocking Olimario.

My impression of economists is that a lot of them love their numbers/models more than what they are supposed to represent, i.e. human action and interaction. They'd rather have a coherent/"beautiful" model than one that's able to represent reality.

Probably also the reason why so many of them champion shit policies/are shit politicians.

Don't understand how you can have a gym body and not know how to talk to people. Half the battle is making sure you look good or at least presentable. College is so easy for this too because even if something awkward happens or shit goes really badly you already know you probably only have to see this person for a single semester.

If you can't even stumble into sex while in college you need serious help.
