Am I a bad person for not caring at all about gamergate and equality/social issues in gaming like that?

Like I really do just want to play a video game and relax. If you really want to tackle these issues, I think you're gonna have to go further than video games.

The problem with this is that some people just want to at games and relax but can't because when they try to talk about games people don't take them seriously. I wouldn't say it makes you a bad person. Myopic, maybe. But if it's your prerogative that's fine so long as you acknowledge the reality that you don't really care rather than simply dismissing the thing outright. I respect that a helluva lot more than the other opinions I've seen on the matter. So bad person? Naw.

To be fair, I care about social issues in gaming and I've barely paid attention to the thing. I've been too busy with work and playing games on my phone to give a shit. But I'm definitely not going to dismiss the harsh realities that the situation brings.

I started to care. But more and more what I see is two groups of angry people overstating their importance and in essence yelling, "I AM THE MAJORITY/I'M THE FUTURE!!!" when really neither even move the needle in the market. Death throes of gaming journalism and all that.

I have the opposite problem, I stopped posting on gaming boards because people take it too seriously. I just want to know what colour wumpa fruit makes crash go faster, or where the secret path is,  not join an argument about the representation of rodents in crash team racing.

I'm a pretty progressive person I do volunteer work, I donate money, the people closest to me are gay, but fuck I need a cool down from real life as well, thats gaming for me. animoo and films/tv doesnt scratch the same itch.

I LIKE TO READ AND TAKE LONG WALKS ON THE BEACH

I just realized the above is in fact an accurate depiction of some of my likes lol. I read a ton of books, comics and manga and drive to my favorite stretch of beach often just to walk from one pier to the next and back again.

I'm sorta in the middle.
I like from time to time to talk about how games are constructed and stuff like leit motif, mis-en-scene, symbolism in themes and such, where stuff like that is warranted (think Persona, SotC, or Majora's Mask.)

But at the same time I also believe that a vast majority of games have little to no "artistic meaning" or deeper motives. They're just there to entertain. And I find it beyond silly to take these and then try to ascribe some sort of societal truth to these.  Sorta like saying "I don't need to go to French Laundry, I went to Applebee's just yesterday."

So yeah, I'm up for discussing the Jungian way of desctructing Dragon Quest as a mental exercise, sure.  But really it's just sorta fun, not some sort of truth I seek to plumb out and show to the world.

For the most part I cant even do this, I mean i think about the symbolism, themes and such in games where they apply, but as soon as I start typing my thoughts I groan, ask myself why, and go ahead and buy my brother a copy of the game and talk to him about it afterwards. It could be that I just prefer to talk about games instead of typing, who knows.

I'm very capable of typing essays about animoo and or film/tv/football/books/srs business tho, just when it comes to games there is a little Dikembe Mutombo in my brain rejecting every attempt at starting something.

Most movies strive for entertainment as well. Doesn't change the fact that the characters of minorities depicted is pathetic and insulting. Transformers 2 features robots who speak in Ebonics. You can just pass it as "it's just entertainment, it's not trying to be art" and ignore the overall issue or you can face it head on with strength and conviction and say,"that's not cool."

I find your argument intellectually dishonest, no offense, and it's amusing how it's always some dude who dismisses the impact media representation has on people and how it reflects society of how an assortment of creators see their audience. Much like Maddox and his smart dumb diatribe that there is no precedent or historical evidence that female heroes in comic books are more sexualized than the men in comic books in his video defending the hilarious Spider Woman #1 cover. Despite that it was traced over from a porno comic for Penthouse or something featuring a woman's ass sticking out, pussy lips for all to see.

You can say that games aren't striving to be art, but nobody said they were, and that entire argument falls on one large straw man that ignores the overall issue.

Not limited to gaming but you see that strange "why is this a story?" or "why does this topic keep coming up?" sort of comment all the time. Like the person is somehow being forced to read it or deal with the concept. Like headlines or thread titles don't give relevant information so you can avoid it.

It's a form of opposition to a certain point of view within the topic but a lack of confidence in actually engaging in the topic and arguing against the point of view. (Or inability to articulate their discontent. Or fear of being banned.)

It's like those people who get upset and argue with you if you're talking about how the Steven Tyler era of L-E-D Zeppelin wasn't any good even though they already consider you one of the ignorati and beneath them for buying Call of Duty anyway. If I'm so wrong and you don't find my point of view worth discussing, then why do you keep making a show of arguing for all the reasons to dismiss it?

There's a lurking fear that others are going to take IGN's Top Ten Nintendo Sexist and Racist Failures article seriously.

I am sincerely dying for that day. Like literally dying. I broke my diet for the first time tonight. I ate a fried fucking pie. I cried while I ate it.

I'm not sleeping, I'm having heart arythmia, I can't think straight, and I'm just scared shitless and I feel terrible for everyone on all sides of this thing being harmed. I'm constantly second guessing myself and damning myself for the role I'm having in it and that's manifesting in the return of the depression and my compulsive over eating.

I would do literally anything for gamergaters and gaming journalists to try to find some sort of common ground. but its not happening and I know it and I feel I'm letting myself and plenty others down if I don't continue to participate and reminding people to remain civil.

The negative criticisms I've seen in this thread, though warranted, are making me feel evern worse. But I guess I knew that was coming for speaking my mind.

I'm just hoping I survive this at this point. Or maybe I'm hoping I won't. I don't know yet.

But I can't wait until its over to find out.

francis/boogie strikes me as someone with good intentions but not a lot of sense
I like him. I think we need more people like him (in that people need to have good intentions).
However, I think he's grasping desperately to the vlogger things and trying to be relevant whereever he can. That's not a fault mind you, that's his job and can't fault a guy for trying to keep his job. But I do think it clouds his perception of how utterly unimportant it really is in the broader sense. Again, I can't blame him and it's certainly not just him it's a ton of people on both sides of this. It's because they're stuck in their little echo chambers and it makes their whole perception of the thing ultra focused. They need remove themselves from that chamber and talk to people for whom gaming is just something they might/might not do at the end of the day.
