The thing I always got hung up on the moment I had enough patience to think about anything in depth is that it's a completely arbitrary story/idea. Why is creation myth #n a "maybe" and not any other? Because that's what you grew up with and because you don't want to be dead some day, just like most people. That's where my rejection of the whole idea comes in. It would be really nice to not really die and just "ascend" in one way or another, but I can't bring myself to believe in that. It's all wishful thinking (not that's it bad in and of itself, but "It's nice to want things") and in the case of organized religion: scams, politics and moral fingerwagging from old men. Bleh. Not to discount the sense of community it can bring and charity and so forth, but it's attached to ancient mythology that can be twisted and turned to fit toxic agendas so easily, it's just disgusting.

I say today, meaning in the day and age that we live in.

Today in class, I half jokingly said that the legitimacy of the state doesn't exist (I'm voluntaryist). When the rest of the class heard it, they all fucking went nuts. Some people asked me why, some got really offended and some just started saying random shit aloud. What shocked me the most was one girl, who wanted to argue with me, she got really defensive, said all she had to say and didn't let me have a word. Collectively, the class was shocked that there are people who don't believe in the legitimacy of coercive violence.
