I'm still surprised nobody stereotypes black dudes with loving the shit out of Capcom. Cause every black nerd I know is really into them.

Maybe fighting games are a safe way for them to channel their natural aggression?

DD was dope as fuck. Basically the perfect alternative to the Souls series. Made Skyrim look flabby and dull in comparison, fuck that boring slop.

I've never met a black wrpg neck beard but I know a few who like D&D! My dad and cousin fucking love LOTR. Blacks are just as nerdy as everyone else. Probably more so. We just hide that shit. :smug

Younger black kids these days seem to be less weeaboos though. :yeshrug definitely seems generational.

Yes, fighting games have always been pretty big with racial minorities I've seen, particularly asian and black folk

Yeah, that's always been interesting to me. Even last night, I clicked a link to some weekly Smash 4 tournament series that was streaming live, and it seemed like 75% of the people there were black. I used to wonder about why that was, but I guess it makes sense thinking about the arcade background. Polygon had a piece a while back called WHY THE FIGHTING GAME COMMUNITY IS COLOR BLIND. One part focuses on cost:

Quote
There are a lot of factors that led to the arcade scene's diversity. Foremost among them: Fighting games were cheap when they first arrived in arcades, and in most places, they remained cheap for as long as the arcades existed. The barrier to entry was a mere 25 cents. In practice, this lower barrier of entry has opened the community up to people a lot farther down the socioeconomic ladder than the average StarCraft or League of Legends player, and that means a lot more members of marginalized minorities can get their foot in the door.

As fighting game player and game writer Pat Miller puts it, "You have this huge mix of people, this huge range of people, and I think that's because, you know, you didn't need to own a two or three thousand dollar computer to play games. You didn't even have to have a TV and a console. You could just play with a quarter when you were walking around town. ... When you have that space where anyone can go ahead and drop by, play a game, shoot the shit, whatever — and you actually have an incentive to go out to different places and start playing new people who you're not used to playing against — that really kind of did attract a diverse audience."

There's more than just that in the piece. But yeah, again, I've always found the diversity in that particular space fascinating.

There were relatively few black nerds of my generation which was kinda sad and unfortunate. Due to certain socio-economic changes, the rise of the internet and computers, and just the triumph of nerd culture in general, you see so many more black nerds than ever before.

I think the fanbase is white, but the top players are black.

white people have neither the discipline and intelligence of the asians or the rhythm and aggression of the blacks, so they are doomed to spectate  :larry

A Suikoden II OT? What. Nothing wrong with it but I'm surprised for some reason to see an OT for such an old game. You'd think most people who were interested in playing would have pirated it by now. :yeshrug

or if not pirated it, just paid the $120.  It's the price of two current gen games and you get more play time out of it than 5 current gens combined. but people act like the game is impossible to find anywhere on earth and that $120 is going to break the bank.

always weird how people overstate the rarity and value of somewhat-in-demand games.

Act like mental price barriers aren't a thing, brehs  :comeon

i realize it's a thing, but it's a funny illogical psychological thing.

The only Capcom series worth a damn since Mega Man was beheaded and RE went down the shitter is Monster Hunter.

Thankfully it doesn't seem that franchise will be going away anytime soon, even if Capcom are dickishly silent about localization for every new one.

I love Capcom too, they just had a bad run lately and money problems.  I'm definitely buying a PS4 for SFV, cause aside from Bloodborne and maybe Uncharted 4 and Tearaway, Sony has a very weak first party line up.

What!? I guess you haven't heard that DriveClub got a weather patch.

Capcom just needs to make a Resident Evil game that doesn't suck.

I own 6, but still haven't played it. I heard it's worse than 5, which was already one of the most disappointing games of all time.

I did a replay of RE4 again recently, and goddamn that game still owns. Top 5 all time.

6 is worth playing for mercenaries alone. It's a good game for mercenaries alone. The campaign is loaded with a lot of junk, but the combat mechanics are a great evolution of what RE4 started and mercenaries is that with the shitty story/level design/pacing/everything else stripped out. I legit consider it to be one of the most fun shoot/stab games in the past few years if we're just talking about combat mechanics.

Real talk: did any of you like The Evil Within?

It's problems are pretty obvious, but it's still great fun in spite of them.

Story doesn't make a lick of sense, though. Gameplay is great for the most part, with an RE4-level of attention to detail for enemy scenarios. Game is pretty long too, with little repeated content.

Either way, that OT is 17 pages of no actual discussion about the game. It's just pages of "I bought it!", "I'm excited to buy it!" or "damn you sony for making a pricing mistake!".

Sayin' that like it's the only outlier.  A lot of official threads on GAF are like that.  You get semi-better game discussion on SA or even GameFAQs cuz they're actually into playing the game instead of bragging about their ever-increasing backlog or discussing the politics of the game without playing the actual game to base a discussion around their arguments.

Edit: Even 22 pages in, people aren't discussing the game!  :rofl

Even when people do get into the games themselves it cycles around the same talking points throughout the thread. The real beauty of the GAF echo chamber isn't homogeneous thought, it's homogeneous conversation. There is zero interest in discussing games (or film, or music a lot of times) beyond established talking points ("TLOU is really emotional!", "Marvel movies are so fun!", "This album is really avant-garde!"). Turns into a bunch of people reciting marketing points and media hype. People get legit mad if you challenge any conventional thought regarding a given game. Like you're personally attacking them for feeling some type of way about a game. I guess the boilerplate nature of AAA game development kind of steers conversation that way, where people really can't have wildly (or minutely) different experiences...but like, we all draw from different backgrounds. We should all have different perspectives to bring to the table. But it never shows.

Well, I guess that's just kind of the internet at large anyway. Not really a GAF specific issue.

that's the downside of forums; while you can connect with dudes (nohomo) who share your tastes/interests, your interests/tastes just sit in a feedback loop and harden (nohomo).
