Posting on Gaf has to be made under that awareness and I get the decisions that have to be made so it doesn't turn into nasty places like reddit and 4chan. Every place has its own etiquette rules and its fortunately easy enough to meet elsewhere under your own rules and remain on Gaf for everything else.

I wonder if it'd be helpful to give Mods a checkbox where it turns their username like light blue to indicate "not posting as a mod" like we have the "don't use smileys" checkbox. It obviously wouldn't work or ever happen but it'd allow the difference between a mod posting on the topic as a poster and a mod posting on the topic to regulate it. As someone who has handled many forums before (/momo) I've always thought too much about trying to separate the authority and what becomes a sycophant culture.

And I'm happy to see expanding Techromancer attention in here, for a long time I thought it was just me.

I've always been more fascinated with identifying issues and trying to find solutions, like one forum I didn't work for but knew the powers that be couldn't understand why their off-topic sections got no posts and I pointed out it was at the bottom of their forum under like 20 site-topic-specific forums of which only two or three got regular posts so they should flip them.

The only time I ever got into some drama was back when I was a teenager and an admin and mod on two separate sites in the "same field" at the same time. And the drama started from me being demodded after a 9/11 joke on 9/11* and then later being reinstated as a mod and the admin never having the balls to actually fire me or "my team" that followed my view on moderation and moderated at a slightly stricter than The Bore level. Instead when he upgraded the forum from disqus to phpbb he simply dropped the entire mod team and appointed a new harsher one without ever talking to us. And things spiraled downhill because unlike GAF there wasn't people waiting in a queue to desperately be able to post.

That probably really ingrained my "who cares? Let communities moderate themselves for the most part" attitude on moderation. And my interest in easily solvable forum dramas.
