I think it's sad that these people have had their private shots made public -- for money, no less. We live in a society which treats celebrities differently than other people, both revering them and also waiting for any missteps to mock. It's not surprising that so many people are attracted to a chance to seeing them unguarded, seeing their most private moments.

I think it's mean-spirited, but it's also a direct result of the cult of personality surrounding celebrities, and the desire and curiosity those structures have been built to deliberately invoke.

It's a complex issue, but it's made significantly less complicated by being the father of a daughter, and one who will already have to contend with society at a disadvantage just from her gender. This whole thing, which would have been so exciting for me in my twenties or thirties, just seems kind of sad. That's my 2˘.
I talked with this with my teen daughter to try and get the message across. Her reaction?

"So you're telling me these celebrities, who everyone wants to see naked, took naked pics of themselves then not only didn't delete them right away but went ahead and posted them to the cloud?"
you need to teach your daughter about the dangers of microagressions :ufup

To be fair this is cherry picking the discussion. She was disgusted the pics were hacked and that they were shared and all that and didn't understand why anyone would be ok with that (as you'd expect) but this line came up too.

nah lena is fucked up and she's wrong and she's doing damage by what she's saying

Again, this goes back to some sick idea that male sexuality is violence. These people aren't worried about Verlander or any of the men involved. I can't say it's because the files were stolen from the actresses account, because I'm pretty sure the attitude would be the same if they were female celebs taken from a guy's account. Hell, I am sure there would be talk about how awful it is men would save nudes of women they are no longer dating.

As long as people are sexually attracted to women then they're going to look. You don't get to tell people their sexuality is wrong. Of course, there's going to be varying levels of perving on this, but I doubt there's such delcacy held iin her point of view. Outrage gonna outrage.

Howeva, when you throw around weighted terms over this you just weaken the terms you use in the public's eye and do harm to the case of people in real danger. A narcisstic celebs bevy of self nudes spilling out of the Cloud doesn't need to be put on the same level as a word like "violation". Especially when you link it with the term sex offender and make it some sexual violation.  Save that for eastern european girls being forced into porn. You are just weakening the word violation.

Anyways, lack of intellectual cowardice.  :aah

How do you know she's not concerned about the Verlander pics? The main focus of the pictures is the female stars - reddit wasn't getting 100k hits because people wanted to see Verlander's ass. Of course his privacy was violated, I don't think anyone would deny that - but the focus of all of this is on Upton, Lawrence, and the other females. Do you disagree with that?

No one gets to tell people their sexuality is wrong, but at the same time some things are just wrong. Watching a woman shower without her knowing it...would be wrong. Watching a woman undress without her knowing it...would be wrong. They're invasions of privacy, and your sexuality rights don't outweigh that.

Stealing people's personal pics and looking at them...is wrong. And if these were women you knew, say at work or school, and they found out you looked at the pics...you wouldn't be able to just say :yeshrug "I was just expressing my rights as a heterosexual." You'd look like a creep.

Ultimately this is the internet. I have committed a variety of crimes online that I wouldn't consider doing "in real life." I have committed theft online. And I have looked at these pics. Because this is the internet I don't feel bad about it. But I'm sure as hell not going to pretend like I didn't do something wrong, or in the case of these pics...distasteful.

The focus of her tweets was on the women. Yes, the leak is about the female celebs included. They're not advertised as Verlander or Collin Farrel leaks. But the language she uses and the tone of the various angry tweets over this focuses on the women. If it's about people's privacy being violated then speak of it that way. To say this isn't a gendered view of hers is to be real dishonest. Come on.

And there's a big difference between peeping into someone showering and someone taking nude pictures of themselves to show but them getting into the hands of people they didn't intend to show. This was exhibitionism by the celebs. It just got beyond the point they wanted it to. It was dumb to let them get on the cloud, but if you take these sort of type of pictures then you're increasing the chance for them to get out. That's the choice they made.

This isn't someone hiding in the shadows with a high zoom camera taking pics of them changing clothes in their bedroom. These are pictures they took themselves. This is their exhibitionism that went beyond their intended limits. The women aren't against these pictures existing because in many cases they're  holding the camera in the very image itself. I'm not violating anything they didn't already violate.

That doesn't mean I'm all into spreading the pictures or telling people how to find them or continuing to just spread the slip up around. I'm not jacking off to the pics. I do know they're attractive women who took nudes of themselves and I'm not gonna act like finding that interesting is some violation. I'm not gonna have this mau-mau shit try to cage up male sexuality because they have a twisted view of male sexuality. I'm not saying the hacking is right. I'm not for invasions of privacy. I'm just not going to listen to some stupid shit about shaming men for looking at some gal's boudoir photos.

Why should she mention the men? The main point of these leaks is to expose women. There are a total of about 4 guys in these pics. I'm sure she isn't cool with anyone's privacy being violated. This reminds me of people hand wringing over Obama not discussing black-on-white crime, insinuating that he somehow doesn't care about it because he has been more outspoken on white-on-black cases. Lazy stuff.

It just got "beyond  the point" they wanted it to? Dude, they  took those pics privately for people they were in relationships with. This isn't a case of cosplay pics leaking to the public. I get the impression you don't even believe this is an invasion of privacy.

If they want to shame men for this...who cares? I felt creepy looking at some of the pics, I'm not going to catch feelings if someone tries to shame me online over it.

The purpose of hacking is to just show you can hack something and get attention off of it.  I don't think the point was to expose women, though I am not sure what you even mean by that.

Not sure why you'd imply I don't think this is an invasion of privacy.

If you don't understand why the attitude towards men looking at these pics as something to shame or berate as bothersome then fine you don't get it. This is what interests me about this: 1. Privacy in this day and age, and something like the concept of the Cloud's impact on privacy and our limits to invasion of privacy. 2. The charged language towards men in response to this and what it shows about some women's view of male sexuality.

If you don't understand why #2 could be disturbing then you don't understand. But that's what that is. You don't get it. I do.

It's not to hack for attention, etiolate. It's obviously so they can see these girls naked. That's the point of it.

With that said, I don't mind the shaming but I don't think looking at them is that big of a deal or even makes you a bad person. To me it's just looking at naked pics no matter how it got out, which I do a lot anyway.

From what I've heard, and I haven't seen much solid info on how it was done, it wasn't target specified. They got into the cloud and this is what they found. It's not a case of some hacker getting a celebrities contact info and hacking into her phone or account. This was a lot of celebs who for some reason kept nudes on the cloud. It's possible they got into the cloud and this was the juiciest shit they found. For lack of a real knowledge of how they did it, I default to the basic goals of junior hackers. To do it and get attention for doing it.

The huge amount of dudes that lost their shit over the leaks kinda made it about "male sexuality". The whole internet was talking about fapping and jizzing  all over these pics for the past two days. 100k people on Reddit (mostly dudes lets be honest) all waiting for new leaks.  That probably pissed off Dunham and others just as much as the leaks themselves. They probably heard the news and were like "that's horrible" just to go on the internet and see shit like "The Fappening", it must have been infuriating. So I totally understand why they are focusing on the men who are looking at this.

If there was a huge leak of nude One Direction members and CW actors, and Tumblr fangirls went into an overeager tizzy, people would be condemning them in the same way.

First thing I thought when I saw this thread and started reading it was that I was kind of disappointed in my fellow boritos. I saw all the classic victim blaming and a single post that expressed sympathy, and it was about feeling bad for the Verlander guy that was in some of the pics.

A lot of you have risen into high esteem again over these last pages, though  :heartbeat

nah lena is fucked up and she's wrong and she's doing damage by what she's saying

:aah

Realizing you can kickstarter this shit and just not caring to exploit folks  :fbm

"Why aren't women doing men's work too?" Check.

Strawperson of (some) feminists' attitudes towards (aspects of--e.g. street harassment) male sexuality? Check.

(Despite being cis het scum I hang out with "all straight male sexuality is rape" feminists, and I sincerely doubt you've ever even met one (maybe on a college campus), let alone be able articulate their viewpoint in a meaningful manner.)

"Someone else has it worse than you so shut up?" Check.

BTW, legalese has already rendered violation a fairly benign word. I'm sure you take great issue with driving while talking on a mobile phone without a handsfree device being classed a moving violation by the State of California.

The arc of his thread mirrors a Martin Scorsese film. An innocuous start followed by a rapid escalation of excess and outrageous antics. Then after an introduction of conflict, the downfall begins.

Etiolet was the downfall. I could basically hear the first 90s track of the soundtrack as I read it.

We started so hopeful, so idealistic. Now we're all witnesses to digital assault and at least two counts of attempted digital murder. Something tells me Karakand will beat the charges though, I'm sure he knows a good e-lawyer.
