So as far as I can tell:

  • Tony Stark was a Snidely Whiplash asshole who wanted to kill superheros
  • The story didn't even involve the Mutants
  • This causes neckbeards online to call it the worst Marvel story ever

And now Marvel Studios wants to bring it to film.

I, um...don't care?  Seriously why should I be angry about this?  To me, as someone who hasn't read the Civil War stories, the premise sounds pretty cool and logically the next concept the MCU needs to grapple with beyond Avengers 2.  And I also bet that Marvel realizes fans displeasure with the overall plot of Civil War...they're most assuredly going to change some things around.

Also, apparently Spidey might be involved?

BN, I could post excerpts from Civil War issues, but then you'd be scarred for life.

There's a page-length scene involving the Lord's Prayer, alcoholism, and death, for example.

At least the running time of the movies being limited will stop the sprawl of the plot.

civil war was hyped to be some ambiguous story that youll come away from not knowing whos right. what we got was stark sending shield agents to arrest cage at the stroke of midnight when the registration passed, super heroes being sent to the negative zone for not registering, not being allowed to simply retire, super kids being killed and broken to fit the initiation, sending a mob of supervillains to hunt superheroes. and sally worth fuckery. it not only didnt live up to the hype, but was worse.

It was touted as being an ambiguous storyline with no real good/bad guys, but right from the get-go the registration side are all old-timey melodrama villains. Mad? Fuck no, it's a comic book. Disappointed? Sure.

the best parts are when it tries to make a big deal over r-tier characters dying.  and the scene where the punisher murders surrendering criminals in cold blood and captain america gets all pissy about it.

Considering how different the MCU is anyway with its characters, I imagine that its take on Civil War will share similarities in concept and basic premise only.  I don't know, I just find the nerd outrage I read on GAF regarding this choice really stupid.

Shit that isn't surprising at all for 200, Alex.

the premise is pretty silly, too. if anything it's some ideas from the story plus the name for recognition.  civil war is popular in a sales way and the name means something.  it's like how dc keeps bringing back doomsday because death of superman sold well.  but yeah, Age of Ultron is sounding nothing like the Age of Ultron it shares its name with.

Civil War is a genius idea that's ruined by some of the worst decisions Marvel Comics has ever made. Tony Stark is a mustache twirling villain, almost literally. Spider-Man reveals his identity, shit happens, then he takes it all back and the biggest retcon in Spider-man history happens. Cap dies in a pretty stupid and pointless death. It's just a great idea that goes nowhere but at the same time it's so huge that it got lots of people back into comics - including moi. Of the middling mid 00's Marvel stories, House of M and its aftermath are MUCH better.

There aren't enough MCU characters to even make it work, are there? A civil war with 3-4 people per side isn't much of a war.
by the time Cap 3 is out we'll have Ant-Man, Dr. Strange, and whomever is introduced in Avengers 2.  And a probable Spider-Man integration in the MCU.

not to mention Agents of Shield and the Netflix troika (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage) that are/may be in the MCU.

Actually I read Extremis recently, and that was what really turned me into an Iron Man stanboy. Too bad IM3 made such a mockery of that storyline.

Did we read the same Extremis? The movie actually fixed a lot of the wonky-ness that six-shot storyline had.

It's why DC went with "the New 52" but New 52 is shit.

Marvel's major problem is that they kill characters and those characters come back more than Jesus instead of having them actually stay dead in the continuity. (Well, that and some extremely stupid story-lines like Civil War's well-meaning-intended-but-stupidly-executed elements)

It's the part I like honestly. Like uncovering a history as I discover new books within the universe. Like Doom Patrol or Gotham Central or Booster Gold or whatever that adds flesh to other books and events. Like finally getting a grasp around the "actual" events of Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis is fun. Especially when it's taking basically discarded stuff and reworking it to be like crazy important like Starman/JSA did with a number of things where it all comes together later.

I guess the best comparison is to people who are now coming into Star Trek, I watched all of it (except the TOS, but in reruns) as it was happening, and revisiting it is interesting. But there's something about discovering it and being able to take in the entire story after it's ended. But if TNG/DS9/VOY did more open setup (running alongside each other) where things in the universe affected things within each series.

Though I suppose that some of the better works are those that stick mainly to their own inner continuity like 100 Bullets, Fables, etc. Even the Batman books in a way are somewhat more like an unfolding drama that sections itself off from some of the more Powered folk.

The only problem I have with them doing a Civil War story is that they don't have enough characters in place for the two sides to seem big enough.  But maybe they will introduce a shit ton of characters?

You read comic books that either don't interact with the rest of their multiverse much at all (e.g. nu-52 Captain Atom, RIP :tocry) or ones where it doesn't matter at all if they interact because you don't read them for any coherent thought (e.g. Daniel Way DA GOD's Deadpool run).

Not that "serious" Marvel comics are much better, but those panels are from a parody one-off story. (Virtually nothing with Squirrel Girl in it should be taken seriously because she's just a walking, talking punch line.)

I believe Fabian Nicieza wrote it, which makes it even funnier because he's partially responsible for a lot of the dudebro tough breh comics from the 90s.

his spastic LOL HILARIOUS run is one of the worst things to happen to the character. ill gladly take simone back(especially due to her agent x run) than ever hear rumors of him coming back to deadpool

Aside from the Marvel NOW stuff (i.e. the solo book and Thunderbolts) I've read every Deadpool book and Way's run is nowhere near the worst Deadpool (which is the Deadpool from Deadpool MAX).

I can understand why a character who doesn't hide from the puerile nature of comics has always rustled comic fan jimmies doe. :hitler

It's superheroes going to war over having to get superhero driver's licences. Shit was stupid.

TBH it'll probably be done better in a movie cause they'll only have to fill 1.5-2 hours instead of dragging that shit out.
