Played some more of this, still just barely learning the characters. Played it with some friends who are level 30 and 22(?) so got put into games with people who know what they're doing. Just tried to pick a class the game was saying we didn't have one of and do what I could.
This led to me getting to play medic more than I intended to. Just like TF2.

I figured out Lucio, the ingame stuff gives an unclear impression of exactly what he does and I was playing him all wrong. I thought his area of effect had to be triggered, not that it was constant. I did wind up with my first Play of the Game though for blowing two dudes off the side of a map, turning around and killing two more dudes trying to capture the point. So that probably made me like him more.
"Pariah" was one of my more useful classes by getting in the air and just trying to flank and support.
Actually, I found that the class groupings are not necessarily the best description of some of the characters. Like mentioned above Symmetra is only really useful defensively. And Sombra seems more like with some tweaks that she's more appropriately support (maybe she should have the teleporter?) than pure offense.
McCree and Hanzo almost seem like they could be switched. Or in some fifth set of "both-way" heroes.
This all probably reads totally stupid but it's brilliant analysis from somebody who has played like four hours or something and is level six or seven.
