Every Linkin Park song:

Piano melody > "heavy" rock out > Chester what's his face sings a verse > Chorus made to be annoyingly catchy > rap verse > chorus again > half song/half rap verse, can also be a back and forth > chorus > "heavy" rock out again > piano melody plays as the song ends the same way it began.

Add in "my mom doesn't give me what I want" lyrics, and you have a Linkin Park song. Yeah, strong elements  :lol

replace the guitar with synths and rap verses with moans and you'll get a NiN song.

Not content with having someone write multiple paragraphs defending Creed, someone upped the ante and did the same with Linkin Park

yea I've heard a couple NiN songs. Bunch of whiny bullshit, decent melodies. I like some of their songs like March Of The Pigs. I can do without 40yo rich dude angst
:yeshrug

I'm not gonna defend Creed, I've already explained my feelings and what they meant to me. My Own Prison is a great album, I genuinely like Human Clay, Weathered was disappointing. I recognize an L when I take one, so why spend paragraphs performing a crown lengthening procedure it.

Mark Tremonti is an amazing guitarist.

A whole lot of Frank Zappa's work is actually pretty annoying.

It's easy to look back on a time period of music and call it shit and some of it is. A lot of it is still better than the trash that comes out today.

on that note, I don't think good music expires, I just get sick of it or get hung up on negatives without considering the context.

Saying something is "out of date" is ironic because the person who says this is trying to sound authoritative, yet they seem to discount music from the past completely.

yeah, calling something dated instead of evaluating it on it's own merit always gets an eyeroll from me.

I dunno yall.

An album like Black Moon's Enta Da Stage is a classic, but it's so 1993 for better or worse.

True Romance was a 4/13 on the Esch scale. 3 of those tracks were released over a year before the album dropped

Your Old Droog EP > Life is Good.

The former isn't nearly as ambitious, but it's a lot more successful at the lane it stays in.  What Droog lacks in scope, he makes up for in his wordplay density.  Seriously the bar:punchline ratio here is  :whew  LiG has a couple of great songs but I just don't find it as sonically pleasing so it's much less re-playable for me.  I also think Daughters is kind of corny.  Chorus is trash too.

Neo soul artists tend to offer the more sophisticated and write more powerful sides of r&b than is often seen in the mainstream. Erykah Badu for instance touched on subjects no one else in the genre was even close to hinting at as she exposes layers patriarchy in very self reflective music. Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, D'Angelo, Raphael Saadiq, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, John Legend, these artists are legends. I'm not sure what neo soul you're thinking of, probably the 2000's era, but neosoul has been a thing going as far as the late 80's-early 90's after Sade showed you could make pop sophisticated and rap groups like A Tribe Called Quest showed you could make rap have a jazz flavor. Neosoul is almost 30 years old. This isn't some new phenomenon and neo soul artists have dropped plenty of great listens, the latest of which being D'Angelo's Black Messiah.

Meh, I'd say Life Is Good is a lot better than Your Old Droog EP. The highs (Locomotive, Back When, Bye Baby especially) are simply better than anything on the EP.

Himu: I've never been a big D'Angelo fan tbh. I'll give it a listen soon but I gotta prepare to make my 2014 rap list.

The first Black Sheep album was better than any album Tribe ever made.

But Tribe still GOAT rap duo (due to the length and consistency of their career).
