I don't agree with Angry Joe here.  I have no problem with actual third party game console exclusivity.  It's a good way to sell systems.  I.E., I caved in and got a Wii U for Bayonetta 2.  It's when DLC is made console-specific that I have a problem.

And did he rant when Dead Rising 3 was announced as XBone only?   :P

Seems with what Phil Spencer put on twitter last night is that it was Console exclusivity or the game didn't get made ala Bayo 2, DR3 and Titanfall (Didn't MS say they were paying for Tomb Raider as well?) and MS turned it down because "They would rather concentrate on investing in our own games if we already are in that genre" (AKA the money they spend on SF V could be spent on beefing up Killer Instinct as a 1st party IP for the future instead)

Makes sense, really. Sony don't really have a fighting game, PS All-Stars was a dud, I don't think anyone wants a Cardinal Syn reboot and GG Xrd is too niche for console sales (Also Arc seem to be hinting the next revision will be on PC and Xbone anyway) and there's no way in hell they could moneyhat Tekken again since Bamco are pretty solvent while Capcom aren't.

Though if they spent a distinguished mentally-challenged amount of money for Street Fighter I'd question what the hell Sony were thinking. Also I wonder if that means MS is going to moneyhat JRPG's again since they have squat in that genre.

I don't think it makes any sense to pass on a chance at an exclusive Street Fighter game.  It's still quite popular, though this version might not sell as much as SF4, since that was a huge comeback that generated a lot of hype.

Yeah, gaining support from the majority of fighting game devs (Capcom, Netherrealms, anime or otherwise) means that the PS4 is more likely to be the tournament standard for shit like competitions. That's a pretty sweet long-term investment outside of the normal consumer base.

Yup.  Actually a lot of whining just comes from people who don't want to shell out for new arcade sticks, but it's gonna have to happen sooner or later.  It's too bad that nobody seems to care about the Skullgirls dev offering to let anyone use their software, which allows PS3 sticks to work on PS4 games, for free.   :-\

I'm a pad player so I'll just get a much cheaper six button face pad and I'm set.

I can't say this with any certainty, but I think you're reading into that tweet from Spencer wrong. What I take from it is not that there was a sit-down where Capcom shopped SFV to them and they passed, but insomuch as spin to explain how a deal for a game of this magnitude could happen on the competitor's console and he couldn't stop it. It makes sense to argue "deals like this happen, and we have our own fighting game anyway." What's the alternative? What else can he say? Claim ignorance of the deal? Concede that PS4 is probably a better home for SFV than the Xbox One given the market performance of the platforms (particularly in Japan)?

Launchers and ground bounces seem to be in the game both which were SFxT mechanics

That spinning kick special Chun li did in the air also seems to point at air combos.

A more combo heavy game is really not what I wanted after SFIV. We'll see on Saturday though.

The one thing I don't want out of this game is for it to be combo focused. Keeping the combos limited in SFIV was what kept me coming back to it time after time compared to other recent fighters (MvC3, KoFXIII, Skullgirls, etc). Nothing puts me off more from a fighter these days than taking a break from a game, then coming back to it only to be bodied because I can't remember or time the 30+ hit combos correctly. With Street Fighter I just mainly focus on the tools that I have on hand and some basic links. At that point it's consistantly about tactics rather than who has the biggest combo dick.

They just showed an updated trailer at the Capcom Cup.  Charlie is back.  There will definitely be new battle systems in the game, but they haven't clarified exactly how everything works.

Ono says "every character in the game will be more unique than you would expect."

Ultra Street Fighter IV's new patch with Omega mode will also be up Monday.

Really looks like a completely different game in motion.  Tons of new animations added.  Looks like there's no chip damage now.  Ryu powered up his fists like characters can in Tekken, but nothing really happened.  With the way the game is being played right now, Ryu seems like Ryu and Chun seems much more different.

The wall break didn't happen until Ryu finished the round off with a super.

Also in one round, Chun got knocked back into a kitchen area and a ramen bowl fell on her head.  They are playing the next round right now and the bowl and noodles are still on her head!   :lol

The USF4 tournament was great.

I think I saw some chip damage in the SF5 matches, it just didn't kill Chun when she had no health left. It'd be weird if they ship the game like that.

It was, although people were going apeshit over the brackets at the end.  What Capcom posted was not the same as what they went with.  Ryan Hart was supposed to play PR 'Rog.  Capcom said that was a mistake.  People are saying they fucked up badly and should have let them all play again.  Was a mess.

Yeah, seems that way.  Going by how they handled previous games, we'll keep seeing new builds of it at the major tournaments and they'll keep using all the feedback to tweak it before release.  That's fine by me.  Don't want the game rushed and there's gonna be plenty of life left in SF4 with Omega mode.  Omega mode changes the characters around in a lot of ways and is almost like a new version of the game in itself.  You should watch the demo they did on the Capcom Cup stream when the archives go up.  HUGO was given a projectile-like attack and an anti-air.   :lol

I got to see the match a bunch of times on Youtube already. Here's are a few things I notice.

-Chip damage on normals, but the life you lose becomes a white bar, similar to absorbing with focus. You can recover your health if you don't get hit with a special attack.

-I also notice a similiar mechanic to "Just Defend"

-Different Jump arcs

-And Ryu's standing fierce on counter causes major stun that leads to a combo...Looks like is going to be the go to spam tool for him, lol.

What stood out for me out of everything was that background music, so good. SF3 levels right there.

There's a private video on Youtube that supposedly reveals the following:

Quote
- Time / Weather effects in stages
- Release date : 2016, before the end of the fiscal year.
- Unreal Engine 4
- The new mechanic is named V-Trigger : You can change your stance.
- 16 characters
- No Super Street Fighter 2X + EX (Updates kinda like League of Legends / Killer Instinct)
- The story mode will be way much better, they know they fucked up with sf4.
- The PC version is here mostly because they want to bring the game to Latin America, South Asia, Africa...

16 characters seems really small, especially since the character models seem so close to SFIV that they can just use those as a base, and especially for a game that's still 2 years out.  I mean at 16 characters, they'll have to axe like what?  1/3rd of the current USFIV roster and that's if there's no new characters.

I mean I'm all for them pulling a SFIII and removing all the standard SF characters outside 4 or 5 and having the rest of the cast be fresh faces, but they're not dumb and they need this to be successful so I expect a GG X3rd/SFIV style cut half the usual roster + 4 new characters and call it a day, add the rest of the classic characters through expansions + a couple of token new characters.

This game looks like shit but 16 characters sounds like good news. TBH I don't think it's good because the fanbase will be upset 'cause they're used to having so many characters, but games need to stop squeezing in so many fucking characters in one game. It's especially egregious with highly competitive stuff like fighting games. How the fuck do you balance the game with 40+ characters? Even 16 sounds too much.

Do you make a fighting game for the highly competitive players?

or

Do you make a fighting game for 99% of the rest of the population that buys your game?

I'm not saying balance isn't important, but your average player AKA me, who is not the high level master of fighting games, would rather have more characters to choose from/learn than perfect balance because they're not going to know that the balance is a bit off in their hundreds of hours of fighting other non-high-level-players online or with local friends.

MvC2 & VF4 Evo are my favorite fighting games of all fwiw.  Evo had pretty good balance, but MvC2 had no balance but a million characters and was fun as hell.

Also I'm a little livid about low count in SFV not because of the number, but because I'm bored of 75% of the traditional SF gang and I want a SF with new stuff.  If most of the 16 will be new characters I'm fine with that.  But I just really have a feeling it's going to be 12 traditional SF characters + 4 new characters and call it a day.  I wish GG Xrd had 8 originals, 8 new characters.  That's why I really liked when GG went to BB.  It was basically GG but with a fresh new roster.

They make it for the competitive to players and strive for a mix of balance + fun.  Tournies = advertising and they have a big opportunity to grow the scene with this game.  They don't want it to look like shit for the thousands that will be watching it each week, the tens of thousands at majors, and 100k watching evo.  And people being people, they don't want to wait for tournies to get hype.  It'll be a mix of old and new, as usual.

Last time they did what you are asking for, we got SF3 series.  aka mostly useless characters, then Ken above them and Yun above Ken and Chun-li on her own at the top of Mt. Everest.  Evo moment 34 aka the "omg this game is so awesome and hype!!!1" video, is hype for the same reason people would get hype to watch ChrisG's morrigan die....months straight of boring chun dominance.  Not even a little bit because people thought the game was fun and hype  :lol   and it took 3 iterations just to get to that point.  Better to start from a solid foundation and what people with a little new stuff.

Does your average gamer (aka mainstream audience buying most of your product) watch tournaments?  I've never seen one in my life personally and I've been playing fighting games at the arcades since SFII until the arcades died (I used to drive out 45 mins to play at the few remaining arcades) and these days I don't play much since I don't enjoy online.

I'm fine with the lower count since it's understandable. New game, new engine, with new fighting systems, animations, backdrops, stance changes which will lead to more moves, etc. Even though the art direction isn't a huge leap over SFIV, Chun and Ryu are obviously new models with all new, more elaborate animations. With a series that's as picky about it fightings systems and balancing I could imagine that starting from scratch with 16 characters isn't easy and can be very time consuming. That roster will go up gradually over time of course (through the fine Capcom art of purchasing updates) and then we look back and laugh at SFV and its measly roster. Plus I'm sure there will also be hidden characters in the mix like the original SFIV.

ok, you and every other late 20s-30 something played SF2 in the arcades, it's really not a special credential.  they're going after a younger generation and like I said, 1000s watch weeklies, 10s of thousands watch majors, and 100k+ for Evo.  Those numbers are only going up, particularly with $500k on the line for the next Capcom Cup.

so what are you even asking for then...why do people discuss games they "don't play much" :lol

they're putting in the story mode and it'll suck ass, but hey, they're throwing a bone to the loud minority that asked for it

It's 16 characters out of the gate-- if that video stuff is to be believed, more characters will be added later as (real) DLC.  This is following the recent trend of games doing this like DOA5U, Tekken Revolution, and Killer Instinct.

Maybe you should wait to see what the roster is before getting a "little livid," no?

That said, I will be a bit disappointed if it is similar to SF4 in that regard (with Charlie replacing Guile).

Eh, it's 12 returning and 5 new, and they've changed up the returning ones, with some getting pretty different redesigns.  You know more characters are coming anyway-- whether or not they're DLC for Sign or HERE COMES GUILTY GEAR XRD PART II AND III AND IV AND- is another story.  I suspect it will be the latter, because LOL ARC.

Ryu and Chun (and Ken, prolly) are obviously the most important characters, but I don't really feel like there is any other specific character that desperately needs to be included from the jump. I doubt they will do an all new cast except for two though, but I hope they try to add new characters over returning ones as much as possible. Most of the characters designed for SF4~ were quite good imo.

Lack of characters is a bit disappointing, but if they change the gameplay enough to be different from 4, while still being good, I'll live.

Really hoping a KOF14 gets announced soon.

KoF'14 is dropping sprites, though.  :'( Really hope they go with the GGXrd look instead of Capcoms. Much prefer Arc's take on trying to stay true to the sprites in terms of animation.

Yes? A lot of them are "stream monsters." I think you're inflating the fighting game genre's numbers far more than the actual numbers are.

Looks a bit slow right now.  There's some crazy stuff going on during the match when Gamerbee "powers up" and is able to suddenly spam multiple fireballs with Chun.

Maybe something got fucked up?  That background looks like it be more suited for Kingdom Hearts, not Street Fighter.   :lol
