So the movie has been cancelled. Terrorists win. What happens if someone makes a movie about China or ISIS now? Cancel over threats? This makes sony look even more weak.
Sony didn't have a choice but to cancel the current release when every major theater chain
and digital distribution chain said they weren't going to carry it because they were afraid they'd get hacked or worse as well.
Sony's choices were pretty much:
1) Lose the 100 million spent on the film (44 million production costs + heavy marketing campaign) entirely to say fuck you terrorists and release it on torrents so all the world can see FREEDOM.
2) Sit on it until this cools down and hope they can sell it and make some of that money back either in theaters or on VoD at a later point.
They're still a company and money still matters over pride, so they went with #2.
