This Sony hack is pretty bonkers
« on: December 17, 2014, 05:50:02 PM »
It's pretty crazy how thoroughly and completely Sony got hacked. It seems like there is new drama about it every day. So much gossip has been released. And I just heard they cancelled the premiere of "The Interview" over it? Wow.

yeah can anyone sum this shit up / have a good cumulative link to the leaks? :ohhh

Imagine emails saying "x movie sucks balls" or "x person is a distinguished mentally-challenged asshole" where x movie is every movie that Sony currently has in development and x person is everyone who's ever worked with Sony.

I cannot fucking believe this hack managed to get the movie cancelled.

That's fucking unbelievable.

A bunch of hackers from North Korea supported by Kim Jong Cheeselover got that shit done. THEY GOT IT DONE. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

How the fuck is that possible?

Well along with the hack, the group claiming responsibility also made terroristic threats against theaters that played the movie. So of course audience goers would be skittish against going, and theaters would be reluctant to play it.

yeah the theater threats did it in; not only would that be bad for the movie itself, but probably any other movie too.

FBI and reputable news is saying it was very likely NK hacker group Dark Seoul who hacked South Korea last year.  I know people like to make all these conspiracy theories, but sometimes (actually most of the time) the simplest answer is the right one.  NK's had beef with this film for a while and has asked for it to be cancelled several times before this.

yeah the theater threats did it in; not only would that be bad for the movie itself, but probably any other movie too.

Yeah, another studio already cancelled a quality drama thriller set in NK today that was in production.  (http://insidemovies.ew.com/2014/12/17/steve-carell-north-korea-set-movie-dropped/?hootPostID=222fb7ab0647209fb29cb10892565a27)

Terrorists won, world is changed into a shittier place again as what keeps happening post 9/11.

So the movie has been cancelled. Terrorists win. What happens if someone makes a movie about China or ISIS now? Cancel over threats?

So the movie has been cancelled. Terrorists win. What happens if someone makes a movie about China or ISIS now? Cancel over threats? This makes sony look even more weak.

Sony didn't have a choice but to cancel the current release when every major theater chain and digital distribution chain said they weren't going to carry it because they were afraid they'd get hacked or worse as well.

Sony's choices were pretty much:
1) Lose the 100 million spent on the film (44 million production costs + heavy marketing campaign) entirely to say fuck you terrorists and release it on torrents so all the world can see FREEDOM.

2) Sit on it until this cools down and hope they can sell it and make some of that money back either in theaters or on VoD at a later point.

They're still a company and money still matters over pride, so they went with #2.

If I were Sony I would pull it out of theatres. Then release digitally because fuck you. Instead, they let them win and have now set a horrible precedent for creativity. But then again NK is close to Japan, and japan likely treats Nk 1000000x more seriously than we do

North Korea looking like some butthurt bitches over this shit. Remember when there was a whole musical number dissing KJL in Team America?
Remember when they remade Red Dawn and they had to spend like a two years in post production changing all the references from China to North Korea? Now two stoners make a yuckemup and these clowns decided to get offended? For shame!

This is the best thing that could have possibly happened to this movie. When it's inevitably released (probably VOD or direct to disc), scores of people who previously had zero interest in it will buy/rent out of sheer curiosity. By accounts it isn't very good, but it could be absolute dogshit and will now probably end up making double what it would have without the controversy.

That said, this reaction isn't surprising in the least. We're a nation of pussies now. Every time something like this happens nowadays I think about Carlin's "Pussification of America" bit  from years ago and wish he were still alive to see it, because that was some Nostradamus-type prediction shit.

From the comments:

Quote
Wow, how is this sad at all? People ask for TV shows to get released on DVD all the time ("Living Single" is one of the greatest demanded unreleased shows from Warner Bros, for example.) This is literally a reasonable business email; you are just used to no one asking anything of you because you have nothing to offer in terms of help for anyone because you're just a sad sad pile of despair and unwashed socks.

Living Single was ok, not sure why everyone is demanding it. Oscar should be happy to hear Paul Reisers take on Mad About You though

there was a more than great chance that The Interview was going to underperform on its original release date.  Night at the Museum 3 would have curb stomped it anyway.  The multiplex schedule is about to become jam packed and they probably would have lost our anyway.
