Note that the normal "i" sound, like in the word "kill," doesn't exist. Which is why people with the stereotypical Russian accent pronounce it as "keel." Can't speak for all Slavs, but I'm pretty sure it's the same scenario. I know the Ukranian alphabet has the letter "i," but I think it is also used for an "ee" vowel. This is very off topic, maybe there should be a linguistics thread.
