Problem with 'flat' design is that every logo looks so similar with little to differentiate from one another. Girlfriend loves it and I like to tease her saying "you just like it because it takes such little effort" and she doesn't disagree

I'm more into icons for logo designs than the company's name in lowercase helvetica.

Eh. Depending on the industry logos look fairly similar a lot of the time, despite the era. If you look at Fashion it's often capitalized sans serif or serif.

Look at Car makes and it's typically a sans serif with a capitalized letter or all caps sans serif with a chromed out icon.

None of those are particularly new. For social media/tech stuff it's gotten a lot better. Used to be some super stylized shit that looked dated the moment it came out. Either pixelated crap or scifi inspired alien scribes on meth.
