I agree with this in general, but Steam has a real problem right now with allowing the storefront to get clogged with just abject garbage. At the very least, they should have some people who play all these games for a bit to ensure that they're meeting some barebones baseline of quality.

I'd be okay if valve did a two tier system a) pay valve $10k to send over a QA asset to certify the game, all certified games gets tagged with a 'valve seal of approval' or some shit and you can filter your store experience based on it. Everyone wins, people willing to see junk and click 'next' can just stick to the old system and the rest can filter on certification. 'But this sucks for the little guy!' you say, I say if you're in that frame of mind where you're filtering games, you're not really looking for the little guy anyway, and besides the good little guy sells on word of mouth mostly, not storefront ads.

Real talk : Is the UHD player really important ? Maybe not.

Still, even if I don't buy anymore discs, I feel it does impact the value of the machine for me as a consumer... I'd rather have the capability than not, even if it's mostly superfluous and only to buy a couple of 4k Blu Rays from time to time. In the off chance I get a new console in the next two years, that might factor in my decision.

Reading the thread, it does seem like Sony lost a few sales with this. They always seemed proud to showcase in the Playstation the expertise from their other multimedia departments, so it's surprising.

The Sony of 2006 who put a Bluray player in the PS3 is different than the Sony of 2016.  Sony's finances are still dog shit so if they can cut a corner to boost their margins, they will do so.  Just two years ago, they were at junk bond status.  I think they've improved but they still have a long way to go.  Microsoft conversely is sitting on tens of billions of dollars of cash.  They can afford to burn some money on a 4k blugay player.
