Was the N64 the only major console that required a hardware add on to play future games(expansion pak)?

Perfect Dark single player wasn't playable. Majora's Mask was unplayable without it. Think Donkey Shitstain 64 required it. Seems like only MM and DK64 needed it. Apparently it helped make some games look better when it came to color and resolution?

Yup, a few games had hi-res modes.

You needed dualshock to play certain games on PSX. (Ape Escape, for example.)

These were the days when dualshock was cutting edge instead of uninspired POS.

You just needed the dual analog controller I think. As they couldn't bring the Dual Shock over initially because of a Patent issue.

I think a lot of people missed a codec scene in MGS1.

If you have a dualshock controller, Naomi tells you to put the controller on your arm or hand to ease pain after the torture segment. The controller rumbles and can be used to massage the pain away.

The best way to describe the Wii software lineup is a few diamonds in a sea of shit.  I can't fault anyone for overlooking a few of those diamonds but there are some good titles that went unnoticed when the games came out.  I think the good Wii games will be discovered by game collectors with more money than sense and they will appreciate financially in a big way in the future.

nintendrones rewriting history

wii was such a good console! :gddr5

There was a ridiculous amount of pure garbage on the console but it had 2 of my absolute favorites - Xenoblade and Sin and Punishment 2. Plus a lot of great, lesser known games like Kororinpa, Muramasa, Klonoa Remake, Little Kings Story, the Konami Rebirth series, Cubello, and Opoona. Hell, it was better than the 64 and Cube imo.

64 is probably my least favorite Nintendo console and easily the 3rd place system that gen. Horribly lacking in the genres I like - RPG, fighting, 2D action, SHMUP. Blurry graphics that made every single 3D game look like near clones of each other. Abysmal framerates (OOT runs at what, like 15 FPS?). Terrible controller design. Games $20-30+ more than PS1/Saturn.

Cube was a step up from 64 but Nintendo's first party was a bit weak, outside of the amazing Melee. Wii definitely had a more diverse library than both 64 and Cube, and Wii U's got the best first party games since the SNES days, even if the 3rd party is basically nil. Like, even worse than N64's "dream team" with such luminaries as Acclaim on it.

The Wii had the best lineup of first-party Nintendo games of any console, and their best third-party support since the SNES.
I honestly find a good chunk of Nintendo's own offering on the Wii ranging to okay to terrible. Worst Smash Bros, worst Mario Kart, laziest Animal Crossing, terrible Paper Mario, worst Pokemon "Stadium", etc. Mario Galaxy (although not my favorite) and Rhythm Heaven Fever were great though.

Honestly, the Wii is my least favorite Nintendo console, especially on the side of first-party offering. I felt the SNES was the best overall.

'cause I ain't ever used the ignore function in my decade and a half of forum-ing, and Himuro's latest shtick ain't nearly enough to make me start.

I never used the ignore function to this day.  8)

Though I was REALLY fucking close to using it when Greatness Gone was still posting. Not so much cause he bugged me, but because the shit he posted is the kind of stuff that would put you on the FBI's watch list.

The only time I ever put anyone on ignore on GAF was a douche named joelseph. In general, I see using the ignore function as a sign of weakness.

Not many western RPG's have an interesting endgame, besides MMO's. No unique bounties, no super duper mega weapons that kill 90% of enemies in a single hit, no OP abilities that make you a god.

Whereas the majority of JRPG's/Japanese RPGs have a ton of side content or bonus content once you've achieved god like powers, that or a new game +. Dragon's Dogma probably has the best endgame/post game content in any RPG. Final Fantasy XIII, as bad as the first twenty hours are, is a blast to play once you get freedom and start building a super party.

That's the biggest problem with Bioware games. As soon you start to wreck shit, the game is about to end, or you've completed every single piece of content. And a lot of that content was complete garbage.

OH!

It's a game where you need to pay attention to the tutorial for sure. It's a deep combat heavy game with strategy oriented battles. Just start it over. It's the ps2's best rpg so it's worth it.

The later parts of Radiata Stories kinda killed the love for me, but I loved the initial mystique and character focus. Tons of characters had backstory ties with other characters and they all had a daioy  schedule to adhere to where if you wanted to talk to X character, you'd have to just figure out what they normally do at that particular time cuz they aren't gonna wait around for you.

Tri-Ace RPGs are what Level-5 RPGs wish they were. I never really like their stories but god damn they're fun to play.

I played more because I heard the story was epically awful at the end, but I got bored long before I ever got there.

Star Ocean is like sub Tales series level of quality, real talk.

Dragon Quarter is in the top 5 best ps2 RPGs for me. BOFDQ is no slouch, but VP2's combat and dungeon design just nail everything awesome about the genre. Both are radical departures with innovative features though, and while I find Dragon Quarter more radical, I think VP2 is ultimately more fun to play.

My top 5 ps2 RPGs are:

1. VP2
2. SMT3N
3. BOFDQ
4. FF12
5. P3

My favorite is probably a toss up between P3, Suikoden III/V,  and FF12 though.

My top PS2 RPGs in no particular order would be FFX-2, FF12, the .Hack G.U. trilogy, SMT3 and Devil Summoner 1&2. Dragon Quarter would be on there if I had more memories of playing it, cause it was really long ago.

Honorable mentions go to Xeno III for being a decent FFX clone with rad mech battles, Radiata Stories' first half and Legaia 2 for the good effort in trying to keep my favorite PS1 RPG alive, even if it wasn't particularly great.

Radiata was pretty fun, I loved the huge town and vivid graphics the title had, and collecting new fighting partners was as addicting as it is in the Suikoden games. Combat was a tad shallow and the game suffered a bit from a lack of save points but it's still worth playing. Funnily enough it reminds me a lot of a western RPG - plot is elves vs humans and you can pick what side to fight on and the story splits from there :P
