A large part of the reason the shows shock is so off putting is because it serves no narrative point. In the book, she says yes, but more than that, it shows how tender and caring Drogo is beneath the warrior exterior. In the show, she's raped and then a few episodes later they forget about that, she enjoys having sex with him now so it's okay! This is how you get an adaptation where Jaime Lannister kills his cousin or rapes his sister, the person he loves more than life itself.

It's not unfair to say that, generally speaking, this idea of a woman's sexually purity being desirable comes from a more conservative mindset. A person might look at a porn where the woman is willing participating in sex to actually be "forced" to do it- because, to that person, no "respectable" woman would act in that manner. This, again, comes from a more conservative idea that women are "supposed" to be "pure." You can disagree with this idea, that women are to be pure, but denying that this is an actual idea some other groups of people have is ignorant.

I realize that sometimes discussions can veer towards a very black&white view of morals, but it doesn't mean that there's no other side. Not all groups of people have the privilege to be unashamed of their sexual desires. I really only have one good friend in my life, and while I really care for him, it feels like I'm his back-up friend, someone to call if his other friends cancel. It's just so frustrating when I could be in my college classes and I see other people who are constantly getting texts, Snapchats, instagram notifications, Facebook likes etc. They always have someone to talk to. I used to have a cellphone. But I'd only ever get texts from my sister, or rarely texts from my one friend, or calls from my mom.

It's kind of sad that problems like these are only problems if you let them be. Like, I was the exact same in HS/college but it never really bothered me much.

I was good at making friendly acquaintances but kinda crap at moving beyond that. I never actually made more than a friend or two until I moved to Boston four years ago. But I never really cared (or thought too hardly about) whether that was something to be depressed over.

I dunno what I'm trying to say, other than it's interesting to see the same situation I've been through in a different light.

I was always insecure about being a virgin, but now that I'm not it really doesn't feel like a big deal. The sex was good in the moment but the feeling of being used just for sex and then forgotten about wasn't really worth it.

In terms of the ages I had no problem with the book, given the period of history Martin apes. There was no concept of adolescence at the time, you were either a child or an adult; for girls that meant once you could hear children you were fair game. On the flip side boys were sent to war as young as 15 years old. Hell, Joan Of Arc was 15 during many of her earliest military campaigns.
