History and philosophy do matter, because if you're informed about history then you can better understand the reasons why the world exists as it does and can better interact with other cultures. Yeah, most of it isn't applicable to day-to-day life, but it does have expand your horizons and help make you a better critical thinker (which is a good thing to be, contrary to the author's...weird viewpoint).
