IRL Team Rocket.

Anyone else immediately feel like throat-punching the guy with the neck tattoo?

Been playing this quite a bit these past few days, and it's amazing how popular it is. Went to the Hudson Valley Balloon Festival and ran into a family with the dad (probably in his mid 30's, a few years older than me on estimate) playing the game... we were talking about how there's nothing in the area (even though a wide open farm in the middle of nowhere seemed like it would be hiding some good stuff) and then he was telling me how he was playing it for his daughter, and I'm like "yeahhh, suuuure ;)" and then the wife cracked up. But yeah, even my friends who are non gamers were playing during my other friend's bachelor party (no Bulbasaur at the strip club story though :( ).

Any way to get more coins without paying IAP?

Went on a 30 minute walk today and caught 30 Pokemon. Saw at least 6-8 other people walking around with their phones trying to catch Pokemon too. There are 3 Pokestops right next to me and in the last hour they've all had constant "Lure Modules" applied on them. Went from level 3 to 6 and chose Team Mystic.

Blue represent :rock

After an hour of play I had lost 47% of my battery. :lol Went from "maybe" to "definitely" on buying GO Plus so I don't have to have my screen on all the time. Apparently it lets you catch whatever Pokemon you encounter with one button press which is also a lot easier than the swiping. Speaking of I also spent $10 on coins to expand my Pokemon/item storage and buy some Incense. Apparently you find rarer Pokemon the higher level you are, so that’s an incentive to get Lucky Eggs.

I can already tell it's gonna take a lot to get my Gyarados though. 400 Magicandies. :-\

Anyways been having fun with this now that I had some time to actually put into it. Is it sad I want to leave early for work tomorrow just so I can take it slow and play this on the way? Of all the things to motivate me to wake up early. :P

woah, people are actually enjoying this? I opened it and wandered up and around my fairly large backyard, maybe it's my Nexus 6P, but my dude wasn't moving and no pokemans appeared, i clicked on a pokestop which turned out to be a track sign at the top of a hill near my house where i walk my dog.   deleted it within 10 minutes after catching the first pokemon.

Does this game have any kind of hook besides the brand? Does it even have monetization? I don't remember Ingress having particularly lasting popularity after the first month.

The hook is to keep and hold gyms for your team with strong Pokemon, which will get you free Pokecoins. Apart from "catching it all" of course, which is still intrinsically fun outside of the brand itself.

The only other way to get Pokecoins is to buy them with real money.

With Pokecoins, you can buy:

- Pokeballs (self explanatory, though why they won't let you buy Great/Ultra Balls out of the gate is anyone's guess.)
- Incense (attract more Pokemon for yourself for 30 minutes)
- Lucky Egg (doubles XP for 30 minutes)
- Lure Modules (attracts more Pokemon for every player at a specific Pokestop for 30 minutes)
- Egg Incubator (three-time use version of the Incubater every player starts with)
- Storage expansion for Pokemon (+50 capacity)
- Storage expansion for items (+50 capacity)

I think that's it. All in all, very useful things to have but nothing that will say, let you buy a specific ultra-rare Pokemon to the detriment of non-paying players. It's entirely possible to play the game without paying a cent.

Shit is still not active in Japan. I'm sure it will overwhelm ALL THE SERVERS EVERYWHERE when it does.

In the meantime, my poor trainer is wandering around a pastel wasteland.

Should make it easy to claim a bunch of gyms then. ;)

Well I just deleted it off my phone until this gets corrected. Was kind of a shitty game anyways, nine times out of ten you can't even get it to load correctly, and then when you finally are able to, all you do is flick a ball at a Pokémon.

The funny thing is how much of an amateur production this is... there's like one music track that doesn't even loop correctly. There's very limited avatar customization, and what's there looks more like a Sims character than a regular Pokemon character. They could do so much more with this concept but have reduced it to its most basic, but I guess that's mobile gaming in a nutshell for ya.

Went out at lunch in the busy part of Burbank, apart from my 5 coworkers playing this I must've counted at least a half dozen more people that were clearly playing it.

Already there are tons of think pieces on why this doesn't mean AR is here and why this is "succeeding" where other AR/location based games failed (because its fucking Pokemon) and how we shouldn't all pivot towards failure.

Of course the funny part was watching my coworkers exasperation as the game continually crashed or booted them because the servers are fucked. It's like these guys did 0 load balance testing.

Correct. There's really no reason to buy items if you're in a city.

Pokeballs, Razz Berries, Revives, and Potions are free at Pokestops (which regenerate after 5 minutes.)

Lucky Eggs and Incense are sorta nice, but from my experience using them both simultaneously this morning, don't really move the needle a whole lot. And from what I've seen other people are more than happy to use Lure Modules (same thing as Incense, just for everyone) at various Pokestops anyways, giving you that benefit for free.

If you could only get Ultra or Master Balls with Pokecoins I'd probably be calling bullshit, but the structure as-is today doesn't lean heavily on "pay to win."

But what percentage of people will still care by the time they fix all that?

The dropoff rate for this game is going to be insane. I mean Miitomo was pretty bad, but this game is probably gonna drop off by like 70%+.

This game is an unplayable POS.

shut-ins (Image removed from quote.)

Yesterday, after I purposely went out for a long walk to hunt Pokemon, the game froze on me probably 100 times in a couple hours. I spent more time closing and restarting the app than I did playing. There were at least a dozen instances, probably closer to 20 or 25, when the game froze right after I had caught a Pokemon. The screen just froze with the pokeball sitting there. Restarted the app, and guess what? No Pokemon. If you add up all the pokeballs I wasted on those encounters, it's probably over 100. Are they going to reimburse me 500 coins to buy those back? Probably not, though I may try to request it. I had probably a dozen pokestops fail to give me anything. Just spun the icon and got "Try again later."

Also got a couple "Your item bag is full." Of course they sell you a larger bag for real money. Of course they set an item limit that anyone who doesn't battle constantly is going to hit really quickly. Of course the game doesn't default to giving you pokeballs, which don't count towards the limit, if you can't carry any more potions and shit.

The curve mechanic is stupid as fuck. There are a large percentage of phone screens, mine included, that can't deal very well with the input sensitivity that determines whether the ball goes straight or veers off at the last second like some trolling telepath pushed it away. Good fucking luck if you're using a screen protector. Absolutely no one would mourn the curve mechanic if they removed it. It's very obviously there to make you miss more.

You have Pokemon that aren't even that strong escape multiple times even if you're using a raspberry and upgraded pokeball.

Then they have the balls to sell you 20 for a dollar. This when a shitty Pikachu can easily make you go through 20+ with multiple escapes. Should be 100 for a dollar at a minimum.

I'm probably done in a couple days if they don't at least fix the freezing and the pokestop errors. Simple fix: if the game freezes, you either get the Pokemon, or you get every item you used in the encounter back as though there had been no encounter.

As it is, the whole thing is set up in an incredibly mean-spirited way to get you to buy shit for real money at what are frankly pretty ridiculous prices.
