titanfall ~

only problem was lack of customizable stuff
they added a ton of features in patches so im thinking it was rushed to market a bit
still the gameplay was solid as hell

...And there being no replay value.
And no campaign for single-player only players (yes, those folks exist)
And no server browser for PC (surely they listened to this one for 2?)
And they segmented the dwindling playerbase because EA mandated pay-for dlc maps (hopefully EA learned from this one but given BF: Hardline and other titles, probably not. :/).

But yes, it was rushed out the door because EA was tired of the troubled development.

Edit: Meh, "announcement of an announcement." They need to show gameplay and/or show they heard complaints off ASAP. Not announce and wait a month or two before showing it completely. :/

All the above is true but the actual core gameplay blows away anything out there currently with the exception of Rainbow 6 siege.

Disagree with both. The one thing that blew me away about Titanfall was the seemless "Parkour" system and chaining those wall-runs. Otherwise it's another Arena shooter with robots that couldn't fit the maps. Siege is Counter-Strike with Bad Company/Frostbite Engine destruction. :yeshrug They aren't that super revolutionary if you've played a ton of shooters. But in a sea of shooter releases, they are different enough to warrant a look. The major problem for Titanfall going forward is needing a "hook" beyond the Parkour and Robot system and not doing paid-for DLC if they fail to gain traction currently.

Eh Seige isn't like Bad Conpany. In BC at the end of the day the destruction was pointless and almost just aesthetic. It didn't really change the way Battlefield played.

In Seige destruction is a mechanic unto itself and changes the way a player mat go about either attacking or defending. Many areas can be chipped through for actual shots. The ceiling of a place may not even be safe as players can easily shoot down or above and kill an enemy. How you even use walls becomes a point in some games. When is a wall even important in a BC game? I don't even remember chipping through a small corner of a wall just to hopefully get an angle on someone inside a room. The sound of walls breaking is something defenders actually want to listen to.

Knowing points of destruction is an advantage as it can lead to key points or paths or even hiding places.

In BC it was a cool thing that hardly effected the game. Oh I guess there's no cover anymore. In Seige you have to be smart about how it actually works.

Kind of sounds like your're talking out of your ass here.

He was active discussing the game in the Siege threads IIRC.

And BC2 allowed you to change the flow of the maps, it just wasn't as blatantly evident. In Siege you're changing the internal flow of the buildings. BC and BC2 changed the value of areas to the team, especially when key cover was leveled around/near capture points/flanks. They're also different games at the base, with Siege following in CS's close quarters small squads combat model. Battlefield is...a battlefield with tanks and shit. Also, in BC, you respawn multiple times. So the map alterations become a progressive thing. (dat endgame camera view showing the paths of destruction carved through the town or whatever yes plz)

Titanfall's titans were less interesting ultimately than the insane movement system in general. I hope they don't ignore that while also drastically improving the titan combat.

I really dislike collector's editions. Just give me a nice art book are worthwhile material that informs me about the game. Making of DVDs or a design notebook. I don't care about useless plastic.

I also don't like steelbooks that replace the normal box.

It depends on what you want to play. It looks like EA is trying to appeal to different FPS players and also wants to put TF2 up against CoD.

I'm sure they do attract slightly different crowds but when a massive shooter comes out it tends to suck the air out of the room for other shooters for a few weeks minimum.

I want them both but the reality is I'll probably only buy one at launch and then wait for a sale on the other.

This looks good.  Campaign looks terrible (doesn't even look like a campaign with levels; looks like story scenes + fighting enemies on multiplayer maps), but the multiplayer looks really nice.  Did the first Titanfall have bots?

sorta...

there's no AI controlled Pilots, which are what humans play as, but there are all sorts of AI controlled grunts/spectres, including snipers, anti-titan and such and all the titans have rather smart AI. Frontier Defense shows this off as humans vs. swarms of AI titans, grunts, spectres, etc. but there's no opposing Pilots.

I imagine the Pilots mobility, climbing walls, etc. is why there's no AI versions of them. Everything using the AI was ground bound and navigated the basic map, not all the traversal. 2 might add them though, who knows. Or a more advanced bot class that has some of the capabilities.

The campaign in the original was literally just playing the multiplayer maps in a certain order with cutscenes before and after the match, like Brink did. IIRC, this one is supposed to be more of a hybrid between that and a traditional CoD campaign. Maybe something like Bad Company 2, which reused the multiplayer maps as sections of the single player levels, but altered them, added objectives, added connecting areas, etc.

I'm interested in hearing ur take Stoney. I got a key 2 days early and I'm just not really feeling it as much as I felt TF. Even intially.

It's slower, and both modes in the test right now promote camping heavily. One map in particular as well. It's looking like one of those modes is replacing Attrition too which is :unamused:

Everything is different or slightly off. Titan gameplay is different, movement is different, map design is different and even aiming is a little off/different. I don't understand why they couldn't just make Titanfall with more graphical polish and more content/customization but oh well.

I'm trying to stay open, see how this and next weekends tech test go. Right now its basically me and like 400 ppl playing total but it hasn't been great so far.

Had this cool moment though:
http://xboxdvr.com/gamer/Tokubetsu/video/206673343

EDIT: Also the two populated modes right now, Bounty Hunter and Hardpoint, greatly encourage camping and turtling tactics. Right now the game seems to discourage aggressive actions what with how all pilots basically glow bright red/orange even at great distances too.

I played it for a bit before I come back home tonight and I see what toku is talking about. My initial impression is that unfortunately they listened too much to the idiots and made it more cod like. Instead of evolving what they did in the first game they seem to have scaled it back across the board. The titans seem far less important. There is a lot more pilot on pilot combat. The maps feel like they have less verticality and seem way more basic and smaller. Hardpoint felt like domination in call of duty with an open B point and people just camping the shit out of it. It didn't feel that way in the first. The B flag was often in a bunkered building in the first Titanfall so it wasn't just pure death to come near it. You feel like you die way faster. Fights in Titanfall often could feel like a dance. Now it feels like whoever sees who first wins. Which creates more camping. My team got spawn camped in Pilot versus Pilot which never happened in the original. Yeah that was not a good first impression. Like I said, I'll dig way into this evening and weekend but I understand his feelings.

The thing is, its not like you can't have fun with what it is currently. It's just not what drew me in to Titanfall. Titanfall felt like people who were sick of making COD games. Titanfall 2 feels like people who are trying to appease COD fans.

Yep it feels like a step back. It's CoD with a bit more open movement/maps and titans are essentially killstreaks you can pilot.
