I'm shocked. Igarashi made a really generic SoTN clone. Maybe the 12th time's the charm.

Except that this is what everyone wanted.

There hasn't been one of these games released in eight years now.

When it comes to Castlevania yeah, but not in general. Off the top of my head, Strider and Axiom Verge came out in the past few years. There's been tons of indie games that are metroidvania-esque.

capcom said the re7 demo isn't even part of the full game. i feel like if it's really as far along in development as they say it is, they should have had a more extensive trailer ready to go. game still feels like a giant question mark.

Yeah, there's been a shitton of MetroidVania from the indie world, it's nice to see one of the people highly involved in one of those two series getting to take a fresh crack at it with a decent budget, as Bork said, this is exactly what I and a bunch of other people threw money at to make happen.

So it's going to be a modern 4 in more ways than one. Wonder how many iterations it will end up with.

Yeah, but even still, it's not exciting. You think he would have come up with something distinguishing in the past near decade. Getting excited about a standard issue Igavania is like getting excited about a potentially really good episode of Law and Order SVU or something. These things were basically coming out yearly at one point. Like Crash Bandicoot games.

Yeah they were yearly, on fucking handhelds. After being an audio/visual masterpiece on the OG PSX they were stuck with weaker hardware for ages. This is a new project fully utilizing mainline current gen Console/PC tech, and since it's been two or three generations since that's happened there's reason to be excited goddamnit. :punch

It still looks like a handheld game though, it looks like an alright Vita game. The best graphical style it could've had is what Guilty Gear Xrd has, UE3, 2D perspective and styling with 3D models.

Would you really want to play this on current gen consoles? This type of game is so simple that it's a perfect fit for handhelds. Why waste your 60" inch TV on this alone when you could be playing it on a Vita or DS or whatever's out in the future and using your TV for something more worthwhile at the same time, like 227 reruns?

Town-building co-op action JRPG.

Reminds me of FFCC Echoes of Time, the GOAT co-op action RPG. :bow Just with less loot and more town-building.

These graphics look super nice for 3DS imo.

RE4 gets pinned as the thing that changed Resident Evil drastically, the truth is all the classic games sans Code Veronica and REmake all had different gameplay styles and pacing.

RE1 is more about prioritizing item collection, when to pick up something and how long you should be carrying it. Your picking up a ton keys and items constantly. The boss fights were kinda shitty, and combat didn't feel that satisfying. Still a fun game, but its more of puzzle game experiment than anything else. It feels like you're stuck in this location, whereas RE2 feels like a genuine escape attempt.

RE2 is like an action movie with a couple puzzles thrown in. Item collection is a lot less important. There's more convenient drop boxes, and what you do with items is self explanatory. The number of enemies, the feel of combat, how many scenarios where you HAVE to fight, RE2 is a much brisker and awesome game compared to RE1. Less puzzles, more action, better storytelling. Boss fights are also excellent.

RE3 is a hybrid of RE1 and RE2 with Nemesis being a huge addition. You're killing a lot of enemies and running through areas picking up a lot of items. Its completely different than RE1 and RE2 in terms of area design and pacing.

For me 2 > 1 > CV > 3 > REmake > Zero > 5 > 4 > 6.

I only put 5 in front of 4 because of the coop. 4 had the better setting and whatnot.

Don't agree with this at all.  RE1-Veronica are all very much the same, game play and control wise, with each game basically getting refined and more "action-like" with each new iteration.  RE4 changed things up greatly because of the change from static environments to fully-3D areas with smarter enemies who actually would use the environment like the player could.

And Nemesis in RE3 is just an evolution of Mr. X in RE2.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot the new God of War is by Barlog.  Yeah, I have zero concerns about it.  The only great GoW game was GoWII by Barlog.  Dude knows how to direct epic crazy shit and competent gameplay/level design/boss fights.  New game will be good.

It'd be like if Mikami was directing RE7.  I'd be fully on board with the new direction because I know he'd make a great game out of it.

And Nemesis in RE3 is just an evolution of Mr. X in RE2.

Mr X is in the game for like five minutes, and its all scripted. That's downplaying Nemesis as a gameplay addition completely. RE2 also has four different scenarios, compared to RE1 where there's two playable characters and there isn't a lot of difference between both playthroughs.

"Refinement" is a mechanical thing, the design of each classic Resident Evil game is drastic compared to each other. Having replayed RE 1-4 all in the past year, it would be disingenuous to say classic Resident Evil was all samey until RE4. You also have Resident Evil Outbreak, the light gun games, RE Zero. The franchise has always been experimental to a certain degree.

The difference between classic Resident Evils would be like MGS2 compared to MGS3. Whereas classic Resident Evil to RE4 would be like MGS3 to MGS V.

Don't really care for that art style, it looks a bit too mobile-ish for my blood.

But funny you mention Echoes of Time, I just beat that game today! It was OK but really fucking slow (I played on DS not Wii)... camera was zoomed in much too far and when you were fighting multiple enemies the framerate slowed to a crawl. Shame since it had some cool puzzles/level design.

It got more and more MOBA with expansions. There's a cooperative MOBA mode (The Last Stand) that functions as one of the multiplayer components too. Vanilla Dawn of War 2 is more of a tactical RTS with RPG elements.

As for my lore babbling, Space Marines were once large scale armies but because a bunch of them rebelled and tried to seize control of known civilization they were (wisely) transitioned from being a standing large scale army to small special forces units so going back to a Dawn of War 1 style game while keeping just the Blood Ravens as the only Space Marine force is dumb.

It was more squad/hero oriented. Smaller scale and that. I'm not feeling this reversion back to DoW1 either. I enjoyed it but I'm just not huge on that kinda rts game anymore and wasn't really when they were hot.

I also won't lie, I'm a fan of the Capcom Aesthetic. Resident Evil games have continued the trend of Capcom having great character artists. The characters have always looked stylish and appealing to me. Capcom makes stylish characters. I want to play them in third person. Capcom games and even RE6 are very strong in the gameplay mechanics. RE6's gunplay is great, it's just what surrounds the game isn't. RE5 and on have had great presentation in cinematic as well. When Capcom has money they produce very good looking cinematic and create great art.

Some of these things are shallow, but whatever. I've liked RE4-6 because of these things. RE6 may not be great, but it still a decent Japanese action game and well I like those kinds of games.

Ideally, I would have liked something like Revelations 2 with an actual big budget.

Not whatever this is.
