I've been disappointed in the output of r/polandball concerning the Brexit, but this one is pretty good:

Already Scottish independence campaigners are calling for another referendum and Irish parties are calling for a United Ireland referendum.

The final days of the British Empire, brehs :doge

About the only thing Norn Iron had going for it was sharing a border with the Eurozone and now that's going to go away... the place is already a ward of Westminster economically too.

It won't. The remnants of the IRA splinters (Real IRA, Continuity IRA) and the remnants UVF/UDA are nothing but glorified drug and arms dealers these days and feuding with Dublin and Limerick crime gangs. The "Troubles" ended years ago but a lot of the participants who had stakes in criminal elements stayed in and tried to fight the "War" if only to protect their criminal dealings. The British Army and various state agencies are also significantly better at handling terror threats than they were in the 80's.

Some estates in Belfast and other counties are still "no go" areas and there's some real fucked things happening if you talk to a person the wrong way or go in the wrong areas. But a lot of people in NI don't want to see a return to the troubles and a lot of the younger generation don't really give a fuck due to the waning appeal of religion across the whole island (Which was a fertile recruiting ground back then).

If Boris Johnson looked downbeat yesterday, that is because he realises that he has lost.

Perhaps many Brexiters do not realise it yet, but they have actually lost, and it is all down to one man: David Cameron.

With one fell swoop yesterday at 9:15 am, Cameron effectively annulled the referendum result, and simultaneously destroyed the political careers of Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and leading Brexiters who cost him so much anguish, not to mention his premiership.

How?

Throughout the campaign, Cameron had repeatedly said that a vote for leave would lead to triggering Article 50 straight away. Whether implicitly or explicitly, the image was clear: he would be giving that notice under Article 50 the morning after a vote to leave. Whether that was scaremongering or not is a bit moot now but, in the midst of the sentimental nautical references of his speech yesterday, he quietly abandoned that position and handed the responsibility over to his successor.

And as the day wore on, the enormity of that step started to sink in: the markets, Sterling, Scotland, the Irish border, the Gibraltar border, the frontier at Calais, the need to continue compliance with all EU regulations for a free market, re-issuing passports, Brits abroad, EU citizens in Britain, the mountain of legistlation to be torn up and rewritten ... the list grew and grew.

The referendum result is not binding. It is advisory. Parliament is not bound to commit itself in that same direction.

The Conservative party election that Cameron triggered will now have one question looming over it: will you, if elected as party leader, trigger the notice under Article 50?

Who will want to have the responsibility of all those ramifications and consequences on his/her head and shoulders?

Boris Johnson knew this yesterday, when he emerged subdued from his home and was even more subdued at the press conference. He has been out-maneouvered and check-mated.

If he runs for leadership of the party, and then fails to follow through on triggering Article 50, then he is finished. If he does not run and effectively abandons the field, then he is finished. If he runs, wins and pulls the UK out of the EU, then it will all be over - Scotland will break away, there will be upheaval in Ireland, a recession ... broken trade agreements. Then he is also finished. Boris Johnson knows all of this. When he acts like the dumb blond it is just that: an act.

The Brexit leaders now have a result that they cannot use. For them, leadership of the Tory party has become a poison chalice.

When Boris Johnson said there was no need to trigger Article 50 straight away, what he really meant to say was "never". When Michael Gove went on and on about "informal negotiations" ... why? why not the formal ones straight away? ... he also meant not triggering the formal departure. They both know what a formal demarche would mean: an irreversible step that neither of them is prepared to take.

All that remains is for someone to have the guts to stand up and say that Brexit is unachievable in reality without an enormous amount of pain and destruction, that cannot be borne. And David Cameron has put the onus of making that statement on the heads of the people who led the Brexit campaign.

Brussels has also emphatically ruled out informal talks on a possible trade deal before the UK triggers article 50. “No notification, no negotiation,” one official said on Sunday. A diplomat added: “If they treat their referendum as a non-event, we will also treat their referendum as a non-event.”

Might be true, but rolling back the vote in whatever form also means alienating even further large parts of the electorate who already feel (rightly or wrongly) disenfranchised. And unless you're planning on introducing census suffrage back, that's a pretty big issue looming over for the future no matter what contempt you have for "old bigoted fucks". Not that I'm too optimistic the current establishment will find a quiet peaceful way to bring them back into the fold no matter what happens, mind. I think that message is also vastly overstating the drama of what is essentially a two year transition aimed at an orderly exit. Will not be pleasant to be the one associated with it in history books perhaps, but the responsibility of the decision lies at the feet of the British citizens.

Ah man, this shit is so grim. It was always going to play out like this though, and given the next chapter is even worse, I should probably hold on to some of this despair.

It's still grim though. Remainers got fucked, Leavers bought a pack of lies and they're going to get fucked too. This last ten or fifteen years has been like watching two cars skidding towards each other in slow motion. The referendum was the first impact, and now we get to see how badly we end up injured. It was all so fucking predictable too.

My Brexit strategy:

- Invest thousands in artificially cheap British financial stock (done and will keep investing through these coming days)
- Wait a few months for it to climb up to normal (it will or close to it)
- Sell

we've been carrying on as a zombie nation for god knows how long. tories defaulting to a majority, labour becoming the butt of every joke even from their base. the sovereign cash cow of the london financial district being protected at all costs while its trickle down wealth fails to reach former industrial communities that have become dumping zones for new arrivals lined with poundlands and betting shops.

leaving the EU is not and was never the answer to any of this, despite what the tabloids bleated on about. what was required was a party in touch with the working class and solid plan to wean the country off london's teat.

it looks grim now, but there is an opportunity here. the one thing i agree with that bald scouse eddie hitler from bottom alike on question time last night is that all the jigsaw pieces have been chucked on the floor and if there is a half decent leader with an ounce of inspiration locked away somewhere in the halls of westminster, now is the time for them to make themselves known. how the pieces get put back together is up for grabs.

the most depressing thing about this isn't the turkeys voting for christmas, or even the boots and braces racists who are using the occasion to escalate their closet phobias into violence, it's the utter pant wetting, finger pointing, hair on fire hysterical one upmanship i've seen from both our politicians and the average divvy on my facebook timeline. not a single spitfire pilot amongst them.

i suppose we living in a time when an iffy batman costume is a cause for a public outcry, so the reaction to a genuine crisis is to be expected, but to see people call this "a living hell" as they sit eating their cornflakes watching some numbers go down is a bit much for me to stomach.

probably my single most patriotic moment was being in london for the 7/7 bombings. people all came together to complain about the entire tube being shut even though most of it hadn't been blown up and it would take ages to get home so they'll probably miss eastenders.

- Spend the profits on high end British escorts

sadly all our high end munters have been unfairly undercut and usurped by their superior eastern european counterparts, who fancied gnoshing off a banker from essex once a week over working full time in KFC.

Old folk who've grown up alongside Thatcher have voted Leave. I wonder if George Osborne can connect those dots. I still remember his teary eyed face at her funeral. :doge

Could Britons gives me a quick rundown about Corbyn ? Because from the outside it is hard to make a clear assessment. The ridiculous amount of vitriol he got from the press when chosen as the head of the Labour really felt like he was maligned first and foremost for being an establishment outsider, even if some of the criticism was on point.

I'm fairly familiar with the rough outline (old fashioned leftist and somewhat alternative backbencher, has some internal leverage because of all the people who took a party card along with his election as the leader of Labour, etc...), just looking for a first party perspective.

Corbyn has the support of the union base and the labour voters, but there is still a sizable part of the labour party that desperately wants him gone so they can do their usual 'we gotta move towards the center to get votes outta these racist villiage idiots' jig

Quote
The European Union will not hold informal talks with the UK until it triggers Article 50 to leave, Germany, France and Italy have insisted.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel hosted talks with French President Francois Hollande and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in Berlin.

The leaders called for a "new impulse" to strengthen the EU.

All three leaders voiced regret at the UK's vote to leave, with Mrs Merkel calling it a "very painful and regrettable decision".

"We are in agreement that Article 50 of the European treaties is very clear - a member state that wishes to leave the European Union has to notify the European Council," Mrs Merkel told the joint news conference at the German chancellery.

"There can't be any further steps until that has happened. Only then will the European Council issue guidelines under which an exit will be negotiated.

"That means that, and we agree on this point, there will be neither informal nor formal talks on a British exit until the European Council has received the [UK's] request for an exit from the European Union."

President Hollande and Prime Minister Renzi emphasised the need to process the UK's exit as quickly as possible and focus on the challenges facing the remaining 27 states such as fighting terrorism and strengthening the borders.

"Our responsibility is not to lose time in dealing with the question of the UK's exit and the new questions for the 27," Mr Hollande said. "There is nothing worse than uncertainty."

"On the one hand we are sad but it is also the right time to write a new page in European history on what unites us," said Mr Renzi.
