I don't really care whether or not it "beat" SFV since I've been saying this whole time is unity = good, but it adds another point of data showing that Smash is a major contender deserving respect.

Melee is boring shit to watch.  This isn't something you're gonna be able to argue against.  There is no worse game to watch at tournaments....except maybe Pokken.

Marvel 4 wouldn't have this problem.

reminder that Capcom purposely made no effort to fix up Marvel 3 in hopes that it would die* and that it still destroyed SFIV for years all the way up until Ultra came out.

*source: my headcanon

MvC3 is a dumpster fire compared to SFIV, gameplay and design wise. The one terrible thing they share is the comeback mechanic used in each game.

but it almost always beat SFIV in viewers because it's fun to watch and which was the point of my post.  I'd rather watch Marvel's insanity versus the vortex fest and purposely imbalanced revisions of SFIV that plagued it between Super and Ultra.  SFIV's comeback mechanic was the least of its problems after 09/Super.  Not that Marvel is super balanced, but it's a game that can handle imbalance better and make it interesting to watch.

edit: for my own purposes, I wouldn't care if it's Marvel 4 or Capcom Vs. Capcom, though Marvel characters are obviously a huge draw.

Marvel insanity though is I touch you with a light attack and convert it into a 30-50 hit combo to get enough meter to kill your current character or swap your character out with the important assist character or anchor. If it isn't a light touch, its a grab. If it isn't a grab, its going to be assist spam.

The thing I respect about Marvel is the execution required to play the game. Execution though isn't a fun thing for me to watch (which is mainly why I respect Smash bros as a game but think its the most boring game to watch competitively). Marvel 3 having mainly Americans as the competition at major events is another thing that makes it boring to me (same applies to Mortal Kombat and Smash.)

Viewership numbers don't mean much to me, I've never thrown my hat into that pissing contest (like Tasty has been doing whenever Smash is brought up  :doge). To me they matter when something like King of Fighters or Virtua Fighter (RIP) get a lot viewers.

well, there's much more to the gameplay and Marvel insanity also encompasses the scene and drama around the game, which kept escalating for a couple years.  Can't really explain that though, it had to be experienced.

There's more depth than what I said, yeah, but the main style of play for Marvel 3 has been consistent since the vanilla version. I've played a ton of MvC2 and a good amount of MvC3, used to follow MvC3 but stopped a couple years ago.

Yeah, I don't care about the game play here-- I'm watching these games, not playing them.  I don't play Marvel but it's always hype as hell, so I watch.  MKX was pretty crazy too, but I didn't watch it as much this year because a lot of the backgrounds were so dark that it was hard to tell what was going on on-stream.  :lol

Were all the side tournaments streamed?  I was surprised to see just about everything recent had a tourney...even stuff like Kouhime Enbu.

Catherine was on a (hype) poverty stream. I dunno about the others, but I think there were. It's a bit sad that AtlusUS didn't stream both KoF and Catherine, but I guess the time-run-over issue would've made that hard.

(T-T-T-TRIPLE POST because I can)

Andy, let me just say: For all the trollin' of Smash I do: I don't care if it's at Evo or not. I won't tune in, because like Bork: It's boring to me. I hate playing it (because it's not a traditional fighter and I consider it a party-game first and foremost), and I'll troll the fuck outta you about it. But, I don't care. I hope you realize that when you special fellow out about me liking the trollish posts hating on it. If you like it, cool: You do you. ;)

Anyway:

Marvel 4 wouldn't have this problem.

Let's be honest: Marvel 2 is wayyyyyy better to play than Marvel 3. While there's more balance and character variety, there's ways to get out of situations (IMO) in Marvel 2. Maybe it's just nostalgia and general like of Marvel 2 but I couldn't get into Marvel 3 as deeply or as long because like morma said: It's poke and then 100%. Marvel 2 may have that problem with certain combos, but generally you could push back or do a hyper in the air to where "OTG" and stunblocks weren't as long. At least for most players.

I kept wondering if SonicFox just knew he had it in the bag with Alien and didn't want to bother using it unless absolutely necessary.  Probably more along the lines of him not knowing the Kotal Khan match-up as well since people say the character sucks and he apparently doesn't show up too often in high level play.

The craziest player was that Sonya user who kept doing all kinds of shit with her grenades.  :lol

As someone who only follows party games I find MvC totally incomprehensible. Street Fighter is always fun to watch because it's pretty easy to understand the basic game flow and there's a lot of play in neutral

hey, same here.  once the community hype around the game dropped off, I did too.  And it didn't look like things evolved that much watching the finals yesterday, except that the character variety was insane and former B-listers are now A-listers.   Game needed support big time but whatever happened behind the scenes, it got stonewalled hard even throughout its peak.

ChrisG winning the finals was closure for the scene.  That was like the only thing left undone.

You have to start from the beginning. X-men vs SF or MvC1 are wayyy slower than MvC2 and MvC3 even at the beginner level. Once you start to understand advancing guard and air raves, you then can pick up where MvC2/3 cranks up the speed. MvC2 is fast but MvC3 cranked it to 11 with level 3 X-factor.

That guy got so weird!  All the deep, intense stares, weird body language, always wanting to hug and shit. Wtf  :lol

He got fucking steam rolled by the reappearance of 2013 ChrisG, just like he used to when people still cared about playing the game.

Much respect for pushing that team as far as it could go though.  His exhibition against fooblat back in the day was incredible
