The worst part about this is the realization of how naive I was. I live in an echo chamber. I'm a liberal college student, I browse GAF, I listened to pollsters who were apparently rock-solid, and it turns out that the reality I live in is not the real America. I'm actually a little embarrassed. I genuinely thought it would be a fucking landslide for Hillary.

Thank you for doing the deed, Lionel, but I find it hard to believe you were the first mod that saw the post. I'm sure almost every mod is invested in this election and following this thread closely, and it seems like as a rule racial hate speech against whites rarely get taken care of unless members first make noise about it.

This has been bothering me for a while on GAF - I'm one thousand percent for banning racists/homophobes/islamaphobes, but allowing racist comments for a majority group and hand-waving it away as no big deal is incredibly disheartening to see.

I hope it changes soon, because I really don't want to leave GAF - but the amount of anti-white sentiment that has gone unchecked here this election cycle has been a gigantic bummer.

I've joked on here about voting for and supporting Trump, but god knows I never actually did. At lot of lessons learned tonight. The DNC, and a lot of blind voters just had an entire election blow up in their face tonight. You had Bernie. A perfect shot at radical change backed by history and principle. A lot of anti-establishment voters had a primary robbed from them by a dishonest DNC, and those voters had to go somewhere. A mixture of fed up voters and secret Trump supporters shocked you all.

Lesson learned.

Of course not, but what happened with HillaryGAF was just emblematic of what was happening across your nation in sweeping motions: while Democrats rejoiced Republicans tearing at each other, they were blind to the cracks forming in their own camp.

The way Bernie and his supporters were treated and lambasted wasn't just abhorrent, it was stupid and only served to hurt the party. What did you think this Bernie Bros narrative was going to lead to? As an outsider looking in, it struck me as bizarre just how ridiculous it was that otherwise like-minded liberals just tore into each other simply because of how they voted in the PRIMARIES - a time in which voting your heart over your mind was still within reason and shouldn't warrant any form of abuse. Deny it all you want if you'd like, but it happened, and now the whole world must suffer the consequences of a Trump presidency.

Perhaps Hillary could have won if the Bernie supporters were firmly on board, and perhaps she couldn't, but the infighting certainly did the Democrats no favours.

Earlier this year I asked whether people loved democracy or whether they loved progressive values and civil rights and believed democracy was the best way to get them.

As a teacher, I am seriously wondering if education in America has been a failure.

My friends and I finished a conversation on whatsapp (half are actually abroad right now) wondering if our democracy will prevail. And in a serious way. And I couldn't make a case it would...just, "well, i just can't say for sure it will."

This is literally a nightmare. How am I supposed to sleep?

My girlfriend told me tonight that tonight's results is questioning whether she ever wants to have kids, anymore. Which would devastate me if true.

Guys I feel like crying. I won't have children under a Trump presidency. I don't know what their future bodes. They're going to dismantle all the progress we made aren't they?

My wife and (both British citizens), were planning on trying for children in a year or two.

My wife was very upset tonight because she doesn't know how we can give our daughter a good life. Even apart from the white nationalism, there's the economy, climate change, nuclear war. We believed the world was getting better.

I can't really disagree. Every time I look at my daughter I start crying. She is only 2 and she was very happy tonight because she didn't know what was happening.

I had a similar conversation with my fellow grad students after class. Right now, at this moment, I really can't imagine wanting to bring in a child to this world with such a dark, unknown future. It was absolutely heart wrenching to legitimately feel that way.

My class is on systems of measurement in my field, the professor also teaches the ethics course that I'll take next year.

Anyway, as it became clear that something was seriously wrong, and Trump was at 200-something over Hillary, it became obvious no one was focused on the lecture.

My professor had to pause the class (I'm in California btw) and saw that we all wanted to air out what was happening. He first talked about how he had a class on Sept 12 a long time ago, and he knew he couldn't teach that material to the class. He said he felt the same way tonight. He mentioned how he has never talked politics to a class before, how he's in a position of power over us and it wouldn't be right.

However he then opened up the floor to discussion and questions between all of us.

It was heart wrenching. Some people were crying. Most were just shellshocked. Eventually most of us just spoke on our grievance, our sadness, our outlook on the future. It was a bit cathartic to experience that with them.

Mhmm. Treating minorities like shit is something we've endured in the past, but this was the worlds last shot for stopping climate change. It's too late.
