There's some decent cyberpunk ideas in part 2, but it's pretty bad yeah. Biggest downgrade though is the art and especially the coloring. I mean you won't comprehend the story either but that's not the deal breaker here. 1.5 is a collection of side stories for a second run of the manga that never meshed as a complete thing. It's as solid, as individual spy stories, as the first volume without the full overarching plot.

I'm not sure I'm sold on your arguments about the Major ethnicity, as the apparent lack of so called Japanese features on female characters is not a reliable element, quite the contrary. She has a Japanese name, works for Japanese intelligence (and in fact counter intelligence mostly working on domestic soil) : I'd actually expect her to have a japanese body model. But it's not really important as body swapping & fluid identities in the cyborg age is pretty much the main impetus for the story.

If you liked GitS, you should probably take a look at the english prints of Appleseed (Vol 1 to 4, even the half finished Vol 5) and Dominion (the first run especially). Appleseed is really, really amazing.

How many people in that Horizon thread have invested more time bitching about it than actually playing the game?  How many of them even own it?

I put an hour into it this morning and I assume I'm coming out of the tutorial.  So far it's decent but it's really easy to cheese the dinobot AI.  Maybe that gets tougher.  I hope.  I'm way more intrigued by what I've seen of Zelda, but I'm not buying a Switch for one game.

The dialogue bits remind me so much of Mass Effect and Arkham Asylum.  I don't know if it's a characteristic of UE or what but those games both had this thing about them where an NPC's expression would go blank as they mechanically turn away from facing your character at the end of a conversation.  It's like the life is just sucked out of them the moment they finish speaking and it always makes me laugh.  That happens in Horizon, too.

I didn't know Horizon was having any backlash. So far for me it's pretty amazing. It's almost the open world game I've been waiting for. The sense of adventure just feels great. Walking to the main city felt like it did the first time I took that trek to Ironforge in wow. It felt like an epic journey. The world just has amazing scale and artistic direction to it. I can't help but marvel at every little thing and feel excited walking around in it.

The dinobot fights are also pretty interesting to me. They feel very involved. Using traps, specific arrows, and skill makes the battles feel far more like they had thought behind then I thought capable of the developer.

And I'm actually intersted in the story.

Game seems pretty great to me. Combat is good. The open world is great. Music, graphics, and story are all good. Don't know what there is to hate.

Zelda is what I don't get, but I've never gotten Zelda.

As an Aussie, WWI happened after our federation, where we had just become an independent nation, not just a colony. It was the first fight we were involved in that we were there as 'Australians'. And yes, Gallipoli was a failure right from the beginning, if you talked on win/loss terms. But it was where it was where many of the ideals we see as Australian (mateship, ingenuity, bravery, loyalty, a mischievous nature, a bit of a playful disregard for authority.) were forged in fire.

Also, the evacuation of Gallipoli incurred no loss on the Australian side, when everyone told them there would be massive, in large part due to Australian inventions such as the drip rifle

Might makes right. Or what right do the turks have to occupy the byzantine soil?
Quote
It's hard to deny that the Allies made the best of an extremely bad situation at Gallipoli and fought against odds, terrain and circumstances that would have broken lesser units - and the same can be said for the Turks defending their homeland! Military culture the world over celebrates such fighting spirit even as the strategic and political context fades from memory... and eventually it becomes part of the larger patriotic tradition, especially in nations that at the time were still finding their place in the world order like Australia, New-Zealand and Turkey. Sure, some of it is a concious propaganda effort but the feeling is universal enough to recognize it as a natural part of warriorship.

Stealth killing watchers from the safety of the tall grass isn't cheese, it is a necessary mechanic. That opening area is teaching you to deal with scouts first because they alert the rest of the group. In future encounters with stronger and larger groups of enemies, it becomes essential.

If there is one thing that is poor about the game, it is the human combat. The AI is dumb as hell and that is where stealth cheese becomes a real thing.

Also come to the gaming side thread, we need more posters over there  :'(

Hey kids! Since the previous thread didn't go all too well even after multiple bannings and cleanups, let's start over with a nice simple premise. In no sane person's frame of mind did Nintendo suddenly realize they may have issues during launch, then scramble all over each other to include a little message in a peripheral hoping that the gesture would make everything else A-okay. Things don't work like that! Now that being said, if you still can't refrain from posting something along the lines of 'Well isn't that cute, but what about <insert issue here>' we'll gladly help you stop posting for a while.

Since the  Ghost in the Shell movie is coming soon, I've started reading the manga that was just re-released in hard cover format..
  • I love how humorous the manga actually is! There's lots of jokes and fun stuff! It's so different from the super serious tv show from a couple of years ago, or even the mid '90 anime movie
  • It's explained in the side notes that Major's cyborg body is designed to look as generic as possible, to easily infiltrate places. Also, other characters are obviously japanese, compared ot her, who has no typical asian facial features. Maybe neotokyo in the future has more white people. I don't get the shitfits about a white actress being used in the movie adaptation, it was like that in the original source material!  :doge
  • Major seems to be OK with her cyborg self. At some point she even wonder if she has died before. The movie trailer really seem to focus on how the movie Major is trying to find out her identify. I guess the movie will be more of an origin story?
  • I love how the manga curves you into silly shit (like the mechas A.Is talking to each other about their freedom and how they should revolt and then the story is about thai kids being used as mind-sex slaves by rich  dudes. That chapter was  :o

Anyhow, internet fandom is annoying as FUCK.
Now read part two. :lol

Or better yet, forget part two exists and read other Shirow stuff like Dominon, Appleseed, and Black Magic.  :)

But yeah, the anime version that Mamoru Oshii did in 1995 took parts of the GITS story, stripped all the humor and personality out of it, and made this pretty, super-serious, boring as fuck movie.  I fell asleep watching it the first time.
