I mean, yeah. I know people who write for all kinds of publications. It's all snippy and there is infinite bad blood, because when a guy flips table and leaves, there are only so many places to go to get paid to write, so often it's for the competition. Even among your own people, it's more like a good, uneasy alliance, because you know deep down that if cuts were to come (and cuts are always coming in journalism) that the people you were drinking with last week would chuck your ass under the bus so fast to keep their job - cause the industry isn't booming, folks. You lose a reporter job now, in 2017, it could be the last one you ever get, even if you're decent at your job.

back in 2002 there was a fun way to illustrate to...well pc gamers, the difference between culling and not culling using the same game series...Vice City on the same hardware would run like five times as fast sometimes as III on the same mid-range hardware because III draws everything within the cone even if it's completely blocked from view, VC does culling properly (they also didn't know how to stream textures in III until late in development so it also streams in stuff it shouldn't, VC fixes this) of course the trade-off is Vice City's pop up and LOD is more obvious, partly because the map has so few hills and so many clear straight-aways

also had an effect on the loading screen times between islands even though VC is loading in way larger islands it streams most of them anyway, it's more about shifting to the "distance" assets for the other island or something i forget i didn't write no book on it jeez

also iirc the PS1 has a really aggressive backface culling system in the default libraries which is why you can do that thing where you stand near walls and adjust the camera so it goes behind it and there's nothing there even if you just passed it that everyone makes fun of

one of many reasons the early PS1/Saturn multiplats ran faster too, i think you had to write your own sort for everything on Saturn in the first year or more, Sega didn't have a library to "automatically" do it for you until after Nights or something dumb like that because they wouldn't give out certain libraries until their own games released while Sony had a somewhat separate staff to decide that and give devs what they were asking for

It always amazes me how little FrozenPrince, Slayven, and Enzom21 know about the judicial system yet pretend to be authorities on the intricacies of it.  How many years did they talk about For Profit Prisons holding down blacks when they are instead used for detaining the accused that are to be deported as illegal immigrant criminals?  There was a thread where they invoked For Profit Prisons for a county jail/detainment cell in a courthouse. 

All they know is "judicial system bad for blacks."  Ok, that's true, but you don't know what the fuck malicious means and you assume every white person will be found innocent and every black person framed.

In the early to mid-1990s, Michael West became a rock star in the world of forensics. West claimed to have developed techniques that he and only he could perform. According to West, those techniques could both identify bite marks on human skin that no other medical specialists could see, and then match those marks to one person, to the exclusion of everyone else on the planet. West helped put lots of people in prison. He soon expanded his repertoire, and became an expert witness in a variety of forensic specialities, including a few he claimed to have invented. In addition to bite mark analysis, West also testified over the years as a a trace metals expert, wound pattern expert, gun shot residue expert, gunshot reconstruction expert, a crime scene investigator, blood spatter expert, “tool mark” expert, fingernail scratch expert, “liquid splash patterns” expert, and “video enhancement expert.” He once claimed he could match the bite marks in a half-eaten bologna sandwich found at the crime scene to the teeth of the primary suspect. Not DNA, mind you — the tooth marks in the bread. In another case, West even offered the jury his expertise about how lesbian couples resolve conflict.

He has been investigated by and either resigned or was expelled from three separate professional organizations. Back in the early 2000s, one attorney tricked West into matching photos of bite marks on a murder victim to the dental plate of the attorney’s own private investigator.

By the late 1990s West was considered something of a quack even within the already dubious forensic speciality of bite mark analysis. Yet Mississippi (and Louisiana) prosecutors continued to use him, Mississippi and Louisiana trial courts kept allowing him to testify, and Mississippi and Louisiana appellate courts kept upholding the crazy things he’d claim on the witness stand.

In 1994, Eddie Lee Howard was convicted for the rape and murder of an 84-year-old woman, mostly due to testimony from Hayne and West. Hayne didn’t initially claim to have seen any bite marks on the victim’s body. It was only several days later, when then-district attorney Forrest Allgood identified Howard as his chief suspect that Hayne recalled seeing marks that could be bites. (Allgood is also the prosecutor who convicted Brewer and Brooks.) The victim had by that time been buried. She was exhumed, and West then performed his magic, claiming to match the alleged bite marks to Howard.

Howard was convicted and sentenced to death. As late as 2006, the Mississippi Supreme Court heard appeals on West’s testimony in Howard’s case. Even while acknowledging West’s severe credibility problem, his expulsion from various professional organization and his many other transgressions, the majority simply shrugged, writing, “Just because Dr. West has been wrong a lot, does not mean, without something more, that he was wrong here.”

After this, a mold was taken of Duncan's teeth for use in bite mark analysis by Michael West. In performing this analysis, West repeatedly pressed the mold into the cheek of Oliveaux' corpse, creating bite marks which had not previously existed. This was recorded on videotape which surfaced in 2008. Michael Bowers, deputy medical examiner for Ventura County, California commented with regard to the bite marks that "Dr. West created them. It was intentional. He's creating artificial abrasions in that video, and he's tampering with the evidence. It's criminal, regardless of what excuse he may come up with about his methods.

Of course they're always going on about for-profit prisons as the root cause of prosecutoral/police abuse despite them being like 5% of the prison industry (warning like most things statement does not apply in California) and as noted there being none in Massachusetts. (If you're one of those weirdo types who thinks receiving stolen money after being laundered through the magic of "public office" is somehow not a profit for anyone involved.)

There just seems to be a lack of basic reasoning being applied to even basic issues on GAF. And criminal justice is supposed to be GAF's bread and butter, and yet...

if your solution to a system of overly harsh retribution distributed inequitably, is to just advocate a different application of even harsher retribution, I am not sure what you are solving?

I guess it could solve the problem of inequity in a bizarre way, but it does the opposite of solving the other problems you are claiming are poisoning the system and society.

And frankly the criminal justice system is a place that the left, and citizens in general, need to look in the mirror more. Yes things like for-profit prisons are problematic, along with any number of established interests that seek to prop up destructive aspects of the status quo, but I don't know of many places in America, even in some of the bluest areas, where being "soft on crime" is seen as a virtue? Or running on reducing conviction rates gives you a big bump in the polls?
