This is all very reminiscent of what happened to off-topic for a couple months post-election. Of course, that madness turned out to be directly induced through sabotage by a now-former admin secretly banning *hundreds* of members totally outside of any justifiable grounds (not that any attempt at justification was made to begin with, being undisclosed and undocumented bans) in some 85-90% of each of those bans that were subsequently investigated after we became aware of the incident.

Not gonna blame Aeana there since that's probably what she was told to say, but the idea that there's nothing to discuss beyond one-two word disapprovals is really bizarre to me.  What about the hit to Gaf's reputation?  What about a wider discussion regarding thinking you know someone and how some project that onto internet people?  What about just plain venting over an incredibly well known member that for the longest time was synonymous with the site?

If you remove all nuance from the discussion, sure it seem like a pretty open and shut case.  A prominent member that hasn't been relevant to the staff for years got caught with CP.  These things happen on sites that large, so no big deal, right? 

Except that doesn't take into account the fact an abrasive mom-beating, drug-addicted scam artist was given free reign to do whatever for so long, a good chunk of that time being in a position of power.  Nor does it take into account the site owner flat out lying about his relationship with the guy.  Some of these people are always talking about optics when it comes to politics, and yet they aren't holding themselves to that same standard.

And I have no idea what the solution is as it's a tricky situation, but I can't imagine lying (a very easily fact-checked lie in fact with many members able to refute it from IRL interactions) is a good idea.

You had a pedophile prominently posting on your forum. For years. He was a moderator for a long time. He was involved with trading consoles for nude pictures of young women. Your site owner posted these to another forum. He was involved in criminal activity. Your site funded his gofundme. Tyler lied about knowing his real name. He repeatedly posted insane and violent rhetoric towards political enemies. He went to public meet ups with members.

You have a forum with people that have traumatic experiences and you had this sort of person hanging around, who has now been caught with pedophilia and admitted to it, but you don't have anything on the front of the forum about it. You have a policy of silence upon this.

I don't think that GAF necessarily needs to have a thread shitting on Amir0x. It's not important to have people beating their chests to see who can denounce him the most. It's important that people know. The fact you think the only use is for people to beat their chest about who hated Ami the most is weird. I don't get why that wouldn't be something worth talking about when it impacts your site? Given the charges it either just makes you look overly defensive or authoritarian. I do think it's worth checking on the mod list before condemning the mods writ-large because of the significant turn over that's happened and how many more there are now. Aeana obviously has been around, but some of the others aren't as plugged in with GAF and I think some were added to focus on specific communities. Steve's tried to point out here a few times that he's mostly responsible for his beat so to speak and only can speak for himself as he's not necessarily privy to higher up stuff. Some of the mods have seen fit to simply link to Evilore's statement and suggest community threads get back on topic but not punished anyone that I've seen whereas Aeana and besada seemed to have more to say on the topic.

The mods seemingly giving up with their pushback against the pile-ons and hounding is really about my only complaint I'd make regarding the recent crop of mods in their overall management, there was some real effort there for a bit but with Stump losing interest and how much swarming the mob puts into it, it's fallen off the last couple months and it falls into the hands of those mods who do seem to prefer that it happen so they can then take out the person once the mob is done playing with their food. The Anita thread would have been better served with somebody stepping in with a post rather than whoever was sitting and watching and waiting for each dummy baited and piled on to stick their foot in their mouth deep enough finally for the banhammer.

But I think I've talked about my notion that racking up bans and/or letting the mob "expose" those people who "aren't a good fit" isn't necessarily good moderation before and I'm not even discussing the Amir0x kerfuffle anymore at this point. But I think the key point is that Dennis, like Amir0x, is permabanned, so can we really question GAF moderation's quality? That's for the philosoraptors to decide I think.
