It's less that he himself is powerful, it's that he's associated with some of the most visible and liked people (the McElroy's) and works for a successful outlet where he may or may not have friends in powerful places. You can make it seem very convincing when it ends up being a lie. Emma Sulkowitz still gets referred to as a victim when her claim had no merit in court or after any scrutiny of the claim. A lie given legs can be powerful. At the same time, Cosby got away with some dark shit just due to power.

My personal bias is one that leads me to believe that a Polygon writer could be a creep due to all the virtue signaling that place does. Comedy Central did for a number of years use different versions of SNL than the NBC reruns/DVD versions/etc. They used to have a version of SNL cut into an hour which usually dumped one of the musical sets if a band/artist did two and often would dump a sketch and part of Weekend Update. I think Comedy Central used the originals fit into an hour and a half.

Should note that this is because SNL airs with different sized commercial blocks than regular shows since they're live. Or at least used to. I haven't seen a live episode in like a decade probably.

iirc from the book, Lorne cared less about the cursing slip-ups than the network who would get angry over those, but Lorne would freak the fuck out about minor stuff nobody outside the show would even know about

also, he has fresh popcorn constantly popped for him at all times of the day

I've always wanted a (modern) cast member to explain what the protocol is when someone slips up and says fuck.  Is there a required HR meeting?  Does Lorne just shrug or maybe scowl at that player the next monday?  Does he have to make a phone call and assure someone it's not a big deal? 

And he has a cadre of women to fetch it for him at all times.  Those women go on to be the directors of TV shows.



Edit:  I like how in that book all the people he fired go on to say they have great relationships to this day.
