I guess I could list some peer reviewed studies, they do seem to be out there to some extent.
Just taking a logical angle, I do not know of any advertising firms, psychologists, or political campaigns that found success in persuading, changing the behavior of, or shifting loyalty of a person or group by calling them pieces of shit and threatening to destroy their lives.
And if anyone goes to visit the Joe Arpaio thread, you will find quite a few posters pointing out that old racist Joe's use of harsh incarceration methods had zero effect on reducing recidivism.
Seems like if shame, threats, and harsh retribution were the superior form of long-term behavioral modification and loyalty shifting, it wouldn't be avoided so much by the people that's self-interest is centered around persuasion.
