Mario Kart 8 Fans Say DLC Is A Graphical Downgrade

Five years of progress, amazing...

Probably some B team or third-party porting tracks from the F2P iOS game.

This + seemingly no battle mode tracks =

MK8 Deluxe is Nintendo's highest-selling non-originally-bundled game ever. I don't think it's wrong to expect a little something more here from the presentation, personally.

Some of the tracks are definitely from the F2P game, which is cool to me in that they'll feel "new" even if they aren't.  But yeah, what about the battle mode?  Wish they'd say something about it.

Literally the only significant enhancement in the Deluxe version of MK8 was fixing the godawful battle mode from the Wii U original. They literally took the fan feedback into account and made an entire new version out of it. They knew this is what fans wanted.

So the DLC rolls around and... they totally fucking forget the entire point of MK8DX in the first place: fixing the battle mode.

Hopefully I'm just overreacting over nothing, but the betrayal that was MK8 Vanilla's battle mode still lingers fresh in my memory. They really told the entire fanbase with that SKU that Battle Mode means shit to the dev team.

Actually odds are Nintendo's prepping an entirely separate $24 DLC pack with a whopping four extra battle arenas. That'll be the bone they throw. 🙄

I mean do they look better graphics than N64 or DS or wherever they come from?

If so, isn't that an improvement? Plus online. Still seems solid?

That Yoshi course (first image) is from the 64. Artistic license is still allowed when remaking a course.

It's just the art style for the new tracks is more New Super Mario Bros. than whimsical realism.

I'm convinced they're straight dumping these courses from the iOS game with a few minor improvements. Nintendo's cheaping out hardcore on this DLC, the work's been done (and making them bucko money) for years now.

Oh yeah that frameskip thing was awful. I'm pretty sensitive to that (and screen tearing). I still won't get Link's Awakening until they fix the pacing there too.

I suppose if I wanted to "win" this on a technicality, I'd say my screenshot is 1080p so it couldn't have come from the Wii U version, so five years still holds (2017 DX -> 2022 DLC). ;)

It's a port-up/revival of an older game.  The chibi beat-em-up came after.  If you want more of that, check out Ogre Tale, from the same developer, on Steam.

People have said it doesn't control as well though.

Nah, Rex was still a terrible character design in a terrible game.

Honestly the Xeno games have pretty bad character designs outside of Gears. Even then that's 90s anime fan talking.

i can't think of a more disproportionate mess of shota bait in any game i've tried to play beyond rex. so bad

BOTW2 is probably their 2023 game. I only see it release this year if they run into trouble with anything else they have announced.
I don't think they're really in a hurry to drop it in what is probably going to be a crowded holiday season on all sides.

They're planning to release Mario Kart 8 courses up to the end of 2023 so that tells me their next-gen machine won't surface until 2024 (but we can't rule out additional Switch revisions).

I think there will be a tie-in game for the Super Mario Movie also and that will be the big holiday release this year in favor of Zelda.

Ya, I think the plan was a Twilight Princess type of release with Switch Pro in 2022 but then the chip thing fucked that up and Switch Pro is now shuffled off for later years or scratched all together.

The Switch OLED is almost exactly like the most credible Switch Pro leak at the time. Which stated that the system was mostly the same but included a DLSS enabled dock that could output up to 4k but would settle at 1440p for most games.
However, that functionality was said to have been 'delayed' for launch because of software issues and would be enabled later with a patch. The OLED shipped but not the new dock. It was probably scuttled or indeed delayed.
I'm going with scuttled as DLSS still hasn't been adopted industry wide to a level that Nintendo would be comfortable using it. And how knows, maybe they simply couldn't fix the issues or it was too expensive considering the chip shortages.

I honestly think some people got their wires crossed with the Steam Deck. AMD was working on some kind of custom chip that was for a gaming console but no one knew which one.
It wasn't powerful enough to be 'next gen' but more capable than Switch. Next there was the software side of things and Nintendo picked up some games that couldn't run on Switch, turned out they fixed that with a Cloud solution.

I never believed that a Switch Pro would do more than upscale considering the increase in size of carts native 4k gaming and assets would bring and the fact that Xbox Series S taps out at 1080p for most games.
Nintendo probably looked at the numbers and decided it was not worth it to jump the gun in 2021 or 2022. All they would get is the games they have now but only slightly higher res or in 60fps instead of 30fps at quite a higher cost.
By 2024 they should be able to easily hit 4k upscaled from 1080p with DLSS and that opens up the Xbox One / PS4 library for ports.

Stealth drop Mario Odyssey 2 for the 2022 holiday and BOTW2 for Spring 2023.
Yep, that's the plan. It already leaked alongside Sonic Frontiers so it can't be that far out.

That big Nvidia leak is also turning out to be mostly on the money with things announced no one thought were real like Chrono Cross.

Dont forget the Switch (and prior Nintendo stuff like GBA) released in March. And the GBA SP was announced the first week in January after everyone bought the GBA for Christmas.

We could see Switch U in March 2023 with BOTW2 at launch and Mario Kart 8 MEGA DELUXE which is the same fucking game but the DLC included.

James Crystal Ball:

BOTW: GOTY Edition launches November 2022. Same game, DLC included plus new exclusive costumes - $49.99

Twilight Princess HD launches December 2022, or one of the other games they havent ported I dont care to look it up

BOTW 2: March 2023 on Switch and Switch U

I've played a bit of Pokémon Legends: Arceus with one of the kids and it's well made. But I'm probably the wrong person to ask. The only monster collecting games that I've enjoyed are Megami Tensei variants.

Diamond/Pearl look like uprezzed 3DS to me, but if you want old-school pokemans, it should work nicely.  Pokemon Legends Arceus is worth checking out.  Plenty of griping about its visuals but it's the first Pokemon to change up the formula and it's fun to play.

If you're just looking for some well-made/performing Switch RPGs, Gust has really gotten it down lately with their Atelier games and Blue Reflection.  Just note that they are HEAVY on the :uguu

Kind of surprised there's a new mainline one already. Feels too soon, or maybe Sword and Shield really left ni lasting impression.

Some of the talk of everything on the field sounds like a change. What I hope though is this isn't like Sword and Shield and losses all the steam in the 2nd half. Where "cities" feel like just one room. I hope this new field structure dosen't impact and make less of the world.
