Re: political consequences in 2020

Voters have short-term memory, not to mention literally anything can change between now and then. We're just shy of day 10 lol. Extrapolating to 2020 positively or negatively is just an exercise in masturbatory wishful thinking at this point.

Just had a random thought.  Why can't a bunch of rich billionares on the liberal side buy out Fox News in a hostile takeover and fire everyone and get rid of the right-wing's biggest propaganda tool?

Because Fox is owned by another rich billionaire and the lowest level you could initiate an hostile takeover (provided it's possible) is probably at the 20th Century Fox level (who owns the entity which in turn owns the news arm).

Also, if serious, suppressing it won't make the voters vanish.

In all honesty, though.  Boogie.  What do I have to do to start the process of moving to Canada?

All of this bullshit mixed with Trump announcing his SCOTUS pick tomorrow just pains me.  I can't take it anymore.

I don't have any greater insight to the process beyond browsing the immigration Canada website:

As Ripclawe said in another thread, it ain't a given and easy process, where you just decide to come to Canada and fill out some paperwork, wait a few months, and bam, you waltz in.

I think this is the key point people should fucking realize, you just don't waltz in to any country and get to stay, even open and inviting countries have rules.

Next time someone says about foreigners just waltzing in you can ask them if they realize how hard it is to get in. They dont.

The greater Toronto area, the greater Vancouver area, and... well not so much Montreal.

Their toxic comments section aside, GAF occasionally brings my attention to interesting articles I wouldn't have found:

http://motherboard.vice.com/read/big-data-cambridge-analytica-brexit-trump

The story on the analytics team Trump and Brexit proponents used is pretty fascinating. Maybe the narrative that big data failed in this election was pre-mature. Clinton and Democrats just found themselves behind the times?

I have read/heard some interesting stories on the way fanduel and other less prominent gambling sites use analytics and personality profiling to target people and maximize returns. Though I am certainly interested in any good stories lol.

Edit: though thinking about the article some more. Really it just seems like the next obvious step in data gathering for political camapaigns. Obama perfected pinpointing demographics and basic information. This seems to pinpoint what specific messaging is effective to both increase support and suppress opponents. Giving the user a solid advantage in messaging.

but but but but trump is playing 11th dimensional chess!!!111

I mean, is clear that Trump and his staff are political smart enough to get to the Oval Office but they were never smart or competent enough to be unchallenged authoritians. I doubt they expected the backlash for the muslim ban EO even if their intention was to test waters of what they could get away with. Trump and his staff seem to be increansingly frustrated themselves, even Bannon needed to lash out against the media just to cool off.

lmao, what does this even mean. we're into Onion territory here for realz

This is so, so fucking dumb. So dumb. My god.

What you want to do is eliminate the regulations that wouldn't pass a rigorous cost-benefit analysis under your set of assumptions. For example, maybe getting the concentration of Chemical X from 2 ppm to 1 ppm costs way more than we benefit from eliminating that last ppm. Maybe your assumption is that we can live with the risk of that last ppm. Maybe you decide that a regulation that's projected to save 1 life per year at an economic cost of 10 billion a year isn't worth it. Maybe you decide we should be calculating the economic costs of certain regulations differently. That's fine. You can even give the agencies the assumptions they need to use in their cost-benefit models.

What you don't want to do is take an arbitrary sledgehammer to everything. That doesn't make sense from a policy or a managerial perspective.

Good points. I review environmental permits all day at work and I'm not even sure what counts as an individual regulation since they can vary from two sentences to multiple pages.

Which is probably why quantity of regulations is usually measured in pages. I'm pretty sure Trump just has no idea what a law looks like when it's on a page but everyone was afraid to explain it to him.....................

In under 48 hours, the ACLU had received $24 million in online donations, far more even than the $7.2 million the organization received five days following Trump’s election, and around six times the organization’s average intake—per year.

Still a good read though.

They are still dumb unless Bannon only is destibilize the country, but een he is feeling the heat if his rant this week is anything to go by. Sure the hell they are testing the waters, but they are also drowning themselves.

The LGBT ban seems incredible stupid and self destructive as the 20% Tax, so is probably some idea is floting about or fake news.

I'm curious, what are your views on this. Because the actual EO included green card/Visas, despite objections from the DHS and State Dept. The protests weren't about nothing - something actually happen, and people responded accordingly. Or do you disagree.
