My Lebanese employee and dear friend is losing his mind right now. We're talking to an immigration attorney this week to see what we can do in case they are added to Trump's list.

I see people not from those countries already worrying that this is going to expand even further.  I can't even begin to imagine the nightmare that people are going through just trying to get back to the country they live and work in.  Fuck this drumpf piece of shit.

Hard to see how dems justify voting to let Jeff Sessions take over the DOJ after this week of fuckery. TBH I'm not sure democrats have any obligation to confirm any Trump nominees at this point. He jumped the shark a lot faster than I thought he would.

Apparently the State Dept can issue waivers for interpreters and friendlies on a case by case basis. There is confusion over the Green Card part which is causing all the logistic nightmares. Not sure if intended or a fuck-up. That won't last. The reduction in immigrants per year isn't off the flow of recent years. There was a jump in refugees in the past year that this a huge step back from. Also heard that the country list was based on Congress, even if it conveniently leaves in the money countries. Mostly failed state and jihadist run countries is the argument.

But hey we could just pretend this was all a mistake and liberals are being dumb. Initial reports suggesting Bannon overruled officials to ensure the geeen card language remained. We shall see.

WH caves, green card holders are good now
Quote
A top White House official appeared to reverse a key part of President Trump’s immigration order on Sunday, saying that people from the affected countries who hold green cards will not be prevented from returning to the United States.

But the official, Reince Priebus, the White House chief of staff, also said that border agents had “discretionary authority” to detain and question suspicious travelers from certain countries. That statement seemed to add to the uncertainty over how the executive order will be interpreted and enforced in the days ahead.

Mr. Priebus defended Mr. Trump’s order on NBC’s “Meet the Press” program, saying it had been carried out smoothly and was protecting Americans from terrorist threats. On Saturday, a day after the order was issued, airports were marked by scenes of confusion and protest as officials tried to interpret the order, including how to handle green card holders.

On Sunday, Mr. Priebus appeared to announce a dramatic change in those policies, saying that “as far as green card holders, moving forward, it doesn’t affect them.”

https://www.dhs.gov/news/2017/01/29/department-homeland-security-response-recent-litigation

Quote
WASHINGTON – The Department of Homeland Security will continue to enforce all of President Trump’s Executive Orders in a manner that ensures the safety and security of the American people. President Trump’s Executive Orders remain in place—prohibited travel will remain prohibited, and the U.S. government retains its right to revoke visas at any time if required for national security or public safety. President Trump’s Executive Order affects a minor portion of international travelers, and is a first step towards reestablishing control over America's borders and national security.

Approximately 80 million international travelers enter the United States every year. Yesterday, less than one percent of the more than 325,000 international air travelers who arrive every day were inconvenienced while enhanced security measures were implemented. These individuals went through enhanced security screenings and are being processed for entry to the United States, consistent with our immigration laws and judicial orders.

The Department of Homeland Security will faithfully execute the immigration laws, and we will treat all of those we encounter humanely and with professionalism. No foreign national in a foreign land, without ties to the United States, has any unfettered right to demand entry into the United States or to demand immigration benefits in the United States.

The Department of Homeland Security will comply with judicial orders; faithfully enforce our immigration laws, and implement President Trump’s Executive Orders to ensure that those entering the United States do not pose a threat to our country or the American people.

Checks and balances aren't working at all then.

This is nuts:

-On Friday, the Department of Homeland Security determined that President Trump's immigration order didn't apply to green card holders.
-Later on Friday, Steve Bannon overruled them and said it did.
-Saturday night, DHS confirmed that the order applied to green card holders.
-Today, chief of staff Reince Priebus apparently overruled Bannon and said it didn't apply to green card holders after all.

Who are Bannon and Priebus speaking for? Neither one of them has the authority on their own to issue these directives. DHS Secretary John Kelly has the authority. Whoever's running the Department of Justice has the authority. Donald Trump has the authority. When are we going to hear from one of them?

My father's theory is that Trump knew it would be ruled unconstitutional but wants to pursue things like this and other things congress/courts may not approve like the wall simply so that he can say to his base that he tried to do them. Then when inflation goes way up because of protectionist US policies, blue collar workers will look at their paychecks and be impressed even though the real growth of the economy is in the gutter. Sorta makes sense.

My theory is Trump is an idiot.

Quite an eventful week

I also look forward to 99% of people (not here, in general) reading only headlines and not the actual statements.

Also is there really a difference between the Trump twitter and the POTUS twitter if the latter just keeps retweeting the former? lol

It's weird because McCain seems to be regaining his "maverick" nickname in liberal circles.

But its not because he is shedding his more recent calcified partisan positions and is now embracing some bi-partisan ideas like younger McCain, its just because his now more calcified, more partisan positions look almost liberal relative to the Trump administration's bizarre(maybe ignorant) deviation of once bi-partisan views.

I've seen that the Green Card stuff was rescinded, but also that it's still reviewable on a case-by-case basis. I haven't heard SHIT about the dual-citizenship cases; this means AMERICAN CITIZENS can be locked out from their own country? This is utter fucking madness.

In 2004, I was shocked as well, but it was more of a "Don't switch horses mid-stream (mid-apocalypse)" kind of feeling.

We are already seeing so many disappointed, vocal Trump voters who would not vote for him today. Of course, they'd probably back Jill Stein or write in Bernie.

I suspect plenty of the apathetic people are less apathetic now.

Thank you for the correction; I was confused due to conflating it with the Green Card situation, which even Trump's own people couldn't agree on.

Shots were fired at the Quebec Islamic Cultural Centre on Sunday night, where dozens had gathered for evening prayers.

Two people have been arrested but the investigation is ongoing, police said.

Police have not yet suggested a motive, although Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the shooting as a "terrorist attack".

The centre's president told reporters that five people had been killed but police have not yet provided any numbers for the dead and injured.

That article omits the following potentially relevant information:

Quote
"A witness, who asked to remain anonymous, told CBC's French-language service Radio-Canada that two masked individuals entered the mosque.

"It seemed to me that they had a Québécois accent. They started to fire, and as they shot they yelled, 'Allahu akbar!' The bullets hit people that were praying. People who were praying lost their lives. A bullet passed right over my head," said the witness. "

source: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/quebec-city-mosque-gun-shots-1.3957686

Of course, it could just as easily be someone pretending and that statement kinda conflicts with itself (Quebecois accent but shouting Allahu akbar??). Too early to tell. Pretty crazy though

I want this plan to explode in Bannon's face so badly.

I can't see how it won't. Voters are dumb but not that dumb. Unless he's so disgustingly cynical that he hopes for a future terrorist attack which he'll exploit to say "See? We told you, we tried to prevents this, this is the liberals' fault, they helped these terrorists come here". I bet he'd even say it if they weren't from these 7 countries.

 :goty2

If that is the case, a modern Karl Rove this guy is not.

Even places that have been almost disgustingly rationalizing of Trump's nonsense are somewhat fracturing over this. Anecdotal and all that but this seems like at best it is just galvanizing his opposition and only moderately harming his core following. But too many more incidents like this and IDK.

I feel like if you want to be this type of shitheel, moderation is key. Doing just enough that your base thinks you are making good on your promises but not so much the people who only kinda tenuously supported you because they vote on snap judgements and low participation(take him seriously not literally) don't catch wind or have the negative echo pierce their otherwise now mostly politically disinterested bubble.

...Basically you don't overreach on your first week after half a dozen fuck ups already.

Billionaire industrialist Charles Koch is launching a campaign to sink a border tax under consideration by Republican leaders in Congress, a move that could complicate the lawmakers' efforts to find a way to pay for President Donald Trump's proposed wall on the U.S. border with Mexico.

Americans for Prosperity, a conservative political advocacy group founded by Charles Koch and his brother David, plans to use its network of wealthy political donors and activists to kill the proposal...

Quote
Besides defying Republican leaders on the border tax, the Koch-led organization on Sunday challenged Trump on a policy he implemented on Friday to stop the movement of people from countries with large Muslim populations from traveling to the United States.

"The travel ban is the wrong approach and will likely be counterproductive," said an official of the Koch network.
