https://www.nationalaffairs.com/publications/detail/republicanism-for-republicans

If anyone wants to read a well-intentioned and astoundingly dumb essay on what a good, post-Trump Republican party would look like.
The GOP already wanted to take a different route post 2012 especially after the primary clown circus. They wrote entire studies on how to change the party and appeal to a broader audience.
Jeb Bush launched his campaign on a number of those ideas. And unlike Romney only did a fake tan and spoke two words in Spanish, Jeb Bush had a latino wife and spoke fluent Spanish.
With Bush as candidate (and perhaps Rubio as VP), the party thought that they would lock up the latino vote. It spooked team Clinton how well Bush's platform polled if they didn't tell people it was Bush's.
Especially among minorities.

Then the madman came down the escalator.

Anyway Gray Connely pretty much nailed it when he said: "Conservatism won't work unless people have something to 'conserve' and the younger generations own nothing"
Looting the people of their wealth through taxpayer backed bank bailouts, wars and denying young people the chance to buy their own homes, cars etc. ruined conservatism more than any populist movement could.

The cycle of job -> home -> familiy -> retirement that conservatism is build upon has been utterly shattered.

Quote
The reality is that Pelosi grabbed the gavel on Thursday with a firm grip. The first two battles led by Ocasio-Cortez and her Instagramming army of rebels ran smack into Pelosi’s establishment fortress. When Ocasio-Cortez made waves by loudly demanding a new committee tasked with drafting a “Green New Deal,” Pelosi quietly brushed it aside last week, as if to say: Kids, brush up on your Schoolhouse Rock. Then after a meek surrender, Ocasio-Cortez, along with Rep. Ro Khanna, hastily tried to derail restoration of the so-called pay-as-you-go rule or “PAYGO”—a limitation on new spending without offsets that some on the left see as a threat to their big-ticket agenda—only to watch the chairs of the Congressional Progressive Caucus side with Pelosi and nip the rebellion in the bud.

Quote
There’s an old adage in politics that lawn signs don’t vote. Perhaps we can add a new corollary: Instagram followers don’t pass legislation.

Hurray all your voting means nothing!  :patel

The best thing I heard was a reporter ask about a safety net for workers being harmed by the government shutdown and Trump said their safety net will be border security

Now he wants to circumvent congress by declaring a national emergency? Apparently, it would involve repurposing DoD funds to build like 100 miles of Wall on land that the DoD already owns.

I think I want him to do that because he thinks he's getting a fig leaf but it would be such a slap in the face to the military and to his supporters.

That sure was something but good that there's a group going to work over the weekend to solve this.

Although it is quite clear where this is headed.
In the best case scenario Trump will get a steel fence, which he will call a wall.
In exchange it seems for measures to improve the ports of entry and legal ways to migrate.

In the worst case scenario he declares a national emergency and starts building the wall without congressional approval.

Quote from: State Department official
First, the United States is not leaving the Middle East.  Despite reports to the contrary and false narratives surrounding the Syria decision, we are not going anywhere.  The Secretary will reinforce that commitment to the region and our partners.

Second, the Iranian regime is the dangerous actor in the region.  There is no greater threat to stability than the Iranian regime.  The 12 demands that the United States has asked for remain.  The Secretary will continue his work on galvanizing our regional partners and allies to counter the regime’s destabilizing activities.

Quote from: Second State Department official
Concerning Syria, we have no timeline for our military forces to withdraw from Syria.  The President has made the decision that we will withdraw our military forces from Syria, but that it will be done in a deliberate, heavily coordinated way with our allies and partners.  It will be done in such a way that we maintain – we and our allies and partners maintain pressure on ISIS throughout, and that we do not open up any vacuums for terrorists to exploit.

A lot of it sure.

What exactly else should be done?

Trump and Republicans have made it clear they are still all in on the Gingrich style unified opposition strategy, so the only real counter strategy besides total capitulation is to hammer them with bills that they will look bad voting against, like corruption bills, infrastructure funding, ACA fixes, voting rights laws, campaign finance reform, and use that as a vessel to differentiate the parties and make the case for 2020.

every Congress has tons of bills, both great and shit that go nowhere, you can then say you introduced bill so and so and lead the fight on this or that, you get it even when one party fully controls both branches and the party on face supports the bills

there's whole hosts of bills that are introduced every Congress by the same Congressperson and they'll do it for like 30 years or more

shouldn't really feel bad about this House being the same in that regard, you never know when one of them might get momentum by some obscure quirk of fate

It's a way of communicating to voters what they'd do if they had unified control, setting priorities within the party, etc. Plus if you hash out the details even when you know it can't pass, it'll potentially be ready to go as soon as you do get both houses and the presidency. The FMLA and Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act come to mind.

Despite his conciliatory tone in the letter, though, McInnes isn’t always so polite about his neighbors and their signs. He devoted an hour-long podcast on Friday to the signs, with a decidedly less neighborly tone.

“If you have that sign on your lawn, you’re a fucking distinguished mentally-challenged fellow,” McInnes said.

Considering the big-ticket items on the Dem agenda (healthcare, climate, college debt, immigration), I'd like to see them spend the next couple years working out the details on bills where it's easier to reach a consensus within the party (like the big voting reform package they announced) so they can hit the ground running.

You have to assume you have a two year window to pass legislation, the big compromises take forever to hammer out, and there's a good chance that a bunch of time and energy will get diverted to some unanticipated crisis response.
