Quote
A senator from Georgia said on the Senate floor this week that he fears the government shutdown could affect his hometown of Atlanta and its plans for the Super Bowl.

“We’ve got a Super Bowl coming to Atlanta, Ga, in about three weeks. The biggest tourism event in the world this year, ” Sen. Johnny Isakson (R., Ga.) was reported by AJC.com as saying on the Senate floor this week. “What if the largest airport in the world, that’s going to bring people to the largest football game in the world, goes out of business because of TSA strikes?

“Then you’ve just cost millions of dollars to the United States of America, my home city of Atlanta and others.”

According to Reuters, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport expects more than 125,000 passengers during the Super Bowl rush on top of the usual 270,000 that pass through daily.

Security lines are reported to already be as long as three hours at Hartsfield.

I think I'm triggered by "A senator from Georgia said on the Senate floor" and the fact that they don't name him until the middle of the second "paragraph" along with repeating the "as saying on the Senate floor" part. So how do I report Barry Werner for a hate crime?

Also the "Report: [actual headline]" thing is offensive. Games journalists first attacked me with that one.

Ok I'll play. What's the alternative or what would President Mandark do?

A society will always have some racist elements or idiots. Unless you want to start a massive cleansing campaign.

If, like some on the left believe every Trump voter was a Nazi, you'd have approx. 60 million Nazi's within the borders of the US.
You wouldn't have this conversation if that was true.

The last thing any Nazi would do is *checks notes* shut down the government.

Do you read anything before posting your hot takes?

Quote
Taitano said the whole incident started when the teens and four young African-Americans, who'd been preaching about the Bible nearby, started yelling and calling each other names.

It got pretty intense, Taitano said, so Nathan Phillips, an elder with the Omaha tribe, started playing his drum and chanting what she was told was a healing prayer, to help defuse the situation.

Phillips walked through the crowd, and Taitano said things were starting to calm down until he got to the grinning boy seen in the video.

"This one kid just refused to move and he just got in Nathan's face," she said.

Other boys circled around, she said. "They just surrounded him and they were mocking him and mocking the chant. We really didn't know what was going to happen there."

Nah I'm with Nintex on this one. This shit has been twisted to fit a specific narrative and the kid who just stood there awkwardly (a dude banging on a drum walked up to him ffs) is getting doxxed and threatened. The black guys they were arguing with were the crazy Black Israelites. The whole situation is fucked.

Some bored kids at an anti-abortion rally jumping to the beat of the drum and chant and others not moving aside with people wandering about filming these epic scenes with their phones.

WOW I'm legit shook that something as terrible as this happened in 2019

I don't think anyone is at fault here really. Just some protesting and counter protesting. One group trying to chant louder than the other and a bunch of random crazies joining in on the fun.

Yeah the people with phones did. Even in the original video of the staring contest you can see some sort of selfie stick contraption.

Here's a fun #lifehack to try at home.

Look for a group of 30 - 50 people. Beat a drum and walk towards the center of the group.
Once you reach the center... BOOM you are suddenly surrounded by people!

With a little luck some people might start filming with their phones too!

Yes. Many have tried without drums and have not been able to tell the tale.

WOW, this eye witness account of the scene sounds intense. Mandark is right I have to sit down.
Quote
Although he feared a mob mentality that could turn ugly, Frejo said he was at peace singing among the scorn and he briefly felt something special happen as they repeatedly sang the tune.

“They went from mocking us and laughing at us to singing with us. I heard it three times,” Frejo said. “That spirit moved through us, that drum, and it slowly started to move through some of those youths.”

Eventually a calm fell over the group of students and they broke up and walked away.

In Texas’ 23rd Congressional District, his choice was more than symbolic. Mr. Hurd won by fewer than 1,000 votes, and many voters and local activists hold Mr. O’Rourke — whose success helped lift down-ballot candidates across the state — largely responsible for Ms. Jones’s defeat.

“All I kept thinking was, wait, Beto is supposed to be helping us because he’s a Democrat,” said Rosey R. Abuabara, the leader of TX-23 Indivisible, which worked to oust Mr. Hurd. “I really felt like Beto was just getting in my way.”

First that WaPo interview, now this NYT hitpiece. Why is the media trying to take out Beto?

With that in mind, the most Trumpian tactic the comms team employed was arguing with TV networks about the 'chyrons,' the words displayed at the bottom of the screen that act as headlines for whatever the commentators are discussing.

'People watch TV on mute,' the President told me, 'so it’s those words, those sometimes beautiful, sometimes nasty little words that matter.' ...

When the President would deliver a speech somewhere outside of D.C., the research team would take screenshots of all the chyrons that aired while he was speaking. Then, adding those images to headlines and tweets from influential reporters and pundits, they would race to print out a packet before Trump made it back to the White House.

The goal was for Sarah or Hope or me — or whoever hadn’t traveled with him — to meet him on the ground floor of the residence and hand him the packet to review mere moments after Marine One landed on the South Lawn."

You can judge for yourself. Here is video footage of the full incident, from the perspective of the black nationalists. Phillips enters the picture around the 1:12 mark, but if you skip to that part, you miss an hour of the Black Hebrew Israelites hurling obscenities at the students. They call them crackers, feggits, and pedophiles. At the 1:20 mark (which comes after the Phillips incident) they call one of the few black students the n-word and tell him that his friends are going to murder him and steal his organs. At the 1:25 mark, they complain that "you give feggits rights," which prompted booing from the students. Throughout the video they threaten the kids with violence, and attempt to goad them into attacking first. The students resisted these taunts admirably: They laughed at the hecklers, and they perform a few of their school's sports cheers.

Tulsi is giving Schumer the green light to finally cave
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/20/gabbard-democrats-republicans-shutdown-1116066

Quote
Both Democrats and Republicans have “completely hardened their positions and are unwilling to come together and work out the differences,” she said, pointing out it’s not an isolated problem.

She said the problem is “an unwillingness to just say, 'Hey, here's my position. Here's yours. Let's figure out how we can work out the differences that we can, putting forward the best solution for the American people.'”

While recent public polling has pinned most of the blame for the shutdown on Trump and the GOP, that could shift if the public agrees with Pence that the White House's offer is a "good faith compromise" that Democrats refuse to consider.
