Facebook Wars Continue: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/18/technology/biden-facebook-ad.html
Quote
WASHINGTON — A 30-second video ad that ran on Facebook this week falsely accused former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. of blackmailing Ukrainian officials to stop an investigation of his son.

“Send Quid Pro Joe Biden into retirement,” a narrator in the ad intoned.

The video wasn’t released by the Trump campaign, which has produced ads on Facebook with similar accusations in recent weeks. Instead, it was made by an independent political action committee, or super PAC. And it was allowed to run on Facebook with false information, in violation of the social network’s policies on misinformation, the Biden presidential campaign wrote in a letter to Facebook on Thursday.

In the letter, which was viewed by The New York Times, the Biden campaign acknowledged that Facebook had a policy of allowing all political leaders’ speech and ads to remain up because the company considers them to be newsworthy. But the ad by the super PAC was not from a politician, the Biden campaign wrote, so it needed to be rejected.

“This is a most basic test,” Greg Schultz, Mr. Biden’s campaign manager, said in the letter. “The ad contains transparently false allegations, prominently debunked by every major media outlet in the country over recent weeks. It should be rejected.”

The letter exposed another vulnerability for Facebook as it struggles to tackle misinformation in the political ads that are flooding its site ahead of the 2020 presidential election. And it showed that Mr. Biden is escalating a battle against Facebook, blasting it in the letter for selling “the tools to target certain segments of the population with lies.”

...

A week ago, an ad placed by the Trump campaign made similarly false corruption accusations about Mr. Biden. At the time, Mr. Biden’s campaign also sent Facebook a letter asking for the ad’s removal. Facebook refused, saying the ad was from a political leader and thus in the public interest.

...

The super PAC’s ad this week opened with a silhouette of Mr. Biden in front of an image of the White House. A narrator in a foreboding voice claimed the former vice president had blackmailed and threatened to withhold aid from Ukraine to stop an investigation into a company associated with his son Hunter.

Six versions of the ad were targeted to Facebook users in South Carolina, Iowa and Massachusetts, according to Facebook’s ad library. All versions are no longer active.

...

The issue of what Facebook allows and does not allow on its site is unlikely to die down.

At a campaign event on Friday evening in Norfolk, Va., Ms. Warren took a couple of more shots at Mr. Zuckerberg. As she talked about breaking up big tech companies, she said, “Yes, Mark Zuckerberg, I’m looking at you.”

Interesting how the NYT copies the Biden campaigns language and refers to these as "falsely accused" and "false corruption accusations" as if it is settled fact :hmm

This is why Bill cheated on you, Hillary. You bitch.

And I quote The Young Turks:

"She couldn’t beat a junior senator with a Muslim name, couldn’t fairly beat a Jewish socialist senator that’s not even a democrat, and lost to a man with a reality tv show. It’s time for Clinton to go away."

Go away, bitch.

"Yes, this is Joe"

"Hi Joe, this is Mark from Facebook"

"Oh Hi Mark, let me turn down the record player. I really appreciate you calling to support me I..."

"Say Joe, I'm looking at our commitment to your campaign and this months ad spending. Is it true you have just about $9 million?"

"Yeah, we currently have $9 million in hand so if you could chip-in like ol' corn pop used to say I would appreciate it. Still, I told my staff that at least 5% of our spending should be online so..."

"Well I just got off the phone with Brad Parscale and they just 'chipped in' another 200 million in Facebook ads... today. Something about Mitt Romney being a spy for you guys and having an affair with your son,
that shit is getting crazier by the day but it's their money so what can I do"

"That's fake news... you know that Mark. You shouldn't run that."

"Yup, but those ain't fake dollars Joe, bye!"

Listening to a podcast about the cash on hand, Biden's money has also come mostly from large donors that can't contribute anymore, unlike Sanders and Warren.

I think the centrists have more AstroTurf, and that most of the tulsi/yang/Bernie trolls are actually real accounts.

I follow a ton of socialist Bernie-Stan accounts, and they are just full on shit posters.

Meanwhile, you go make a comment about Kamala or Klobuchar on a Nate Silver post and you will get some really weird defenses like 2 minutes later from some super obvious AstroTurf accounts.

Trumps are obvious bots with nonsequitur replies that don’t really make a ton of sense or have no context to the original tweet and are always suspiciously more diverse than his real support.

The BOTS EVERYWHERE thing was really weird to me for a while after 2016, but then I realized these people weren't really on the internet until they came in through Facebook or something. So the whole concept that bots and scripted responses are totally easy to spot just wasn't really a thing they went through. Either that or they're stupid. Or both.

This is why people should be forced, by law, to read internet comment threads on major websites. :punch

Most of the Bernie supporters I find to not necessarily be that enthusiastic, per se, but are usually people that have been locked up, are recovered addicts, had or have chronic medical problems they can’t afford to treat, and/or a bankruptcy possibly related to one of those things and/or spends a lot of time dragging Aimee Therese and Harry Cherry.

“Previously been locked up for nonviolent drug charges” is low-key the best twitter community

I used to work in the fraud department at a major bank, and we had a dude on staff whose entire job was to pretend to be a scammer and try to honey pot scammers on various forums and Facebook to figure out what they were up to and then call customers who’d been scammed by like seeing who interacted with the scammers direct deposit accounts.

His best honey pot was a fat 47 year old divorcee profile from Baton Rouge Louisiana that he set up on Facebook. That was the one all the scammers would try to target.

His stories about calling people to tell them the Navy Seal they sent $5000 to for Body armor and night vision goggles to and married over Facebook instant messenger were both sad and hilarious.

He said usually they would not want to admit that they’d been scammed or that it was just fake, so he’d start with “so this guy, he’s not what he says he is, blah blah blah” and the customer would be like “no! We are in love, we got married over the phone like they do in prison!” And then he’d be like “.... what if I told you he’s done this 10 other women?” And she’d be like “that bastard, get his ass!”

I often see on Twitter where that kind of a brigading is obvious, and the person is one who subscribes to multiple 200,000 account ban lists because they can't stop getting in these spats, but they're still debating whether or not it's bots.

I like when you click on a thread and it's just a bunch of roses in the usernames all screaming the same thing.

my dad fell for one of those fake IRS call scams years ago. He actually drove to the bank and was going to withdraw money to pay them and the bankers had to talk him out of it and explain to him that it's a scam and the IRS would never call your landline and extort cash payments from you. To this day he claims that he acted rationally and took "proper precautions" by "investigating with the bank." Mofo won't admit he got scared.
