There is not a fucking chance a candidate running on mandatory service can get elected in America :dead
Obama proposed something similar during his first campaign.

edit and I guess Hillary did too:
Quote
During an MTV/MySpace forum on February 19, 2008, Hillary Clinton, when asked about education expenses, stated, "I'm in favor of two years of national service, where you could earn up to $10,000 a year doing national service and go right into helping you pay for college." In a follow-up comment, Barack Obama then stated, "one of the things that I've proposed, for example, is that I will give a $4000 tuition credit--every student, every year--so that they are not being loaded up with enormous debts, but there will be a community service--a national service component. The military could be one way for you to get this $4000 tuition credit. Another way would be to work in an under-served school that needs help. Another way would be to work in an under-served hospital or a homeless shelter, or a veterans home. The point is, I think it is important for young people to serve."

On July 2, 2008, in a speech at Colorado Springs, Barack Obama (as presumptive Democratic Party nominee) made another reference to such legislation when he called for the creation of a nationwide civilian service program, by explaining his vision of a national service program similar to the one he outlined in the MTV/MySpace forum, saying he would make federal assistance to schools contingent to school districts establishing service programs, with a goal of 50 h of service per year for middle school and high school students and 100 h of service per year for college students.

Getting middle school kids to volunteer time in an homeless shelter = mandatory military service.  ???

My school district had a public service requirement to graduate high school. I have no idea how common that is, but this was back in the bronze ages.

If anything, that's even more common today. I think Chicago is trying to pass some intent to work requirement for high school or something like that.

I'd be down for something similar, although, more in line with what Joe posted above. Public service with actual public service.
Volunteering, disaster and crisis management local and abroad.

Ideally the military would be more national security locally (like if more cracker teens go on sprees like last year) and assistive abroad. Like staving off American plots locally and going abroad as an extended Military Engineers of sorts role. Help out people in natural disasters.
But that's just my imagination running off.  :salute

"National service" doesn't mean military. Obama's regular example was the Peace Corps. I assumed Pete didn't mean military service, but I only read the tweet Stro posted.

edit:
https://peteforamerica.com/policies/a-new-call-to-service/
Quote
Fund the Serve America Act to increase paid service opportunities from 75,000 to 250,000 in the existing federal and AmeriCorps grantee organizations and through new Service Year Fellowships, targeting high school, community college, vocational, HBCUs and MSI students, and opportunity youth (out of school and work). Emphasis is placed on high-quality service positions, on-the-job training, leadership development, and mentor-mentee sponsoring.

An emphasis on cross-country service will enable urban youth to serve in rural communities, and vice-versa, even as the proposal continues to support opportunities for service at home for those with deep local ties and duties.

Consideration for public service student debt forgiveness, vocational training, and hiring preference for service fellows.
Quote
Quadruple service opportunities to 1 million high school graduates (by 2026 – the 250th anniversary of America’s Independence).

Nationwide rollout of the models developed in Step 2, and expanding out-of-state and international service options.

Expand existing and create new service corps including a Climate Corps (Resilience AmeriCorps + 21st Century Conservation Service Corps), Community Health Corps (i.e. with a focus on community well-being, including mental health, addiction, and substance use issues), and Intergenerational Service Corps (i.e. with a focus on caregiving, mentorship, and other intergenerational service opportunities)

Just realized what pete is trying to do to bernie with the dark money allegations. He's nipping on his ankles hoping the king strikes back and gives him credence.

It's what trump did to topple the expected forerunners, and they chomped on it.

"I don't like Bernie and I don't like Elizabeth Warren," said Ann Cudlip of Brentwood. "They're too far Left for me. I need center, and I need somebody who can defeat Trump. That's my thing."

"Who does that leave you with?"

"Amy and Pete," she said, explaining that she now gives Buttigieg the edge because of his performance in the Iowa caucuses.

"What about Biden?"

"Too old," she said.

A few moments later, Anne Packard, of Holderness, called herself a "moderate independent" and said Buttigieg appeals to her.

"Who else appeals to you?"

"Amy."

"Anyone else?"

"I love Elizabeth Warren but I can't vote for her."

"Why not?"

"I hate Medicare."

"You hate Medicare?"

"I hate it. Been on it for 11 years, and it's awful."

"What about Bernie?"

"I saw him for years ago. Love him to bits, but no."

"So it's really a moderate thing for you?"

"Yes."

"Which leaves you with Buttigieg and Klobuchar?"

"Yes."

Is any name missing from that exchange? The striking thing about the conversation was that Packard went through all the candidates who mattered to her, emphasized her own centrism, singled out Buttigieg and Klobuchar, and never once mentioned Biden, even when given a prompt. Biden is just out of the picture.
Quote
No one expressed any dislike for Biden. They were actually sympathetic to a number of his positions. But they have concluded that he is not the one.

"If he was a little younger. I think his age, unfortunately, is a big disadvantage for him," said Diane Bantis, of Manchester. "I think, physically, he is showing signs that he might not be up for the challenge."

"He's too old," Cheri Sullivan, of North Conway, said simply.

Pete has shown he has no problem with politicking and doing whatever to rise to power, and Sanders' ego knows no shame when it comes to picking "allies".

I probably "trashed" you for having a 180 degree opposite position of something you raged about passionately 6 months ago. If it involved Pete or not I don't know.

I said I wasn't going to vote for Pete and that I will do a write in if he's elected. Then you went into hysterics claiming I was going to support Trump eventually. Pete was definitely the topic du jour. So yes, you know.

It's truly hysterical to think someone who was making proud Republican threads in the last year, and whose only consistent position on anything will change 180 degrees every 6 months, and is already on the "you know what fuck Democrats I hate them" path will flip back to voting for Trump to own the libs and then a few months later make posts about how much you regret having voted for him.

I've hated democrats for years. You don't know this because you're a bum fuck who just popped into a board with decades of history acting like a know it all you moron.
