For what it's worth, I live in a county where one third of the population are immigrants (in a predominantly nonwhite zip code) and grew up attending minority-majority public schools.

I tend to think that being exposed to people of different backgrounds makes most people more sanguine about immigration than freaked out about it. There's probably a reason Trump was most successful in homogeneously white exurbs.

You want to go after the most trumpest of supporters that are clearly racist nutbags fine. But why frame Andrew Sullivan anything remotely resembling that? That's the problem that i have, personally.

Hitchens had a sort of old timey, imperial, patrician sort of attitude towards Middle Easterners: there were Bad Ones, like Saddam and the ayatollahs who were brutish and medieval, and there were the Good Ones like Ahmed Chalabi, who were sophisticated, good dinner party guests, and told him what he wanted to hear about the politics of their country.

I'm sure in his mind he was working to save Arabs, Kurds, and Persians from their oppressors and help deliver them to modernity and enlightenment, but it was an awfully paternalistic attitude and we're all familiar with the results.

He said the majority of those detainees had received the same offer of reunification in exchange for voluntary deportation.

The 24-year-old detainee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity and requested the Tribune use the pseudonym Carlos because he feared retaliation, told the Tribune that he abandoned his asylum case and agreed to sign voluntary deportation paperwork Friday out of “desperation” to see his 6-year-old daughter, who was separated from him after the pair illegally crossed the border in late May. The man said two federal officials suggested he’d be reunited with his daughter at the airport if he agreed to sign the order, which could lead to him being repatriated to his violence-torn home country in less than two weeks.
