However, there is no sensible reason not to impeach Trump right now, even if just to show future generations that some upstanding members of congress were not ok with his criminal behavior and this blatant disregard for the constitution.
George W. Bush signed multiple laws while stating he believed them unconstitutional and that he would not follow them. Congress sent him more.

The only way for anyone to think Reagan was a good president is to either have been fed nothing but Rep propaganda their entire life or be a moron, or a combination thereof.
Even Nixon was a better president and did not cause as much lasting damage to America.

I'm in the mood to learn some stuff.

Why?

I edited my reply above, Reagan was too popular to impeach.
However, there is no sensible reason not to impeach Trump right now, even if just to show future generations that some upstanding members of congress were not ok with his criminal behavior and this blatant disregard for the constitution.

At this point, I don’t think is feasible even as a symbolic gesture. But Pelosi definitely needs to come with an alternative over “let’s wait until we win the 2020 election”. Trump is unpopular but the majority of citizens seem to be against impeachment (don’t ask me why) so is wise not going all out about it, but they should not act like this past weeks were usual political theater.

They aren't acting like that, Pelosi is routinely calling the president and Barr liars. The Senate won't impeach the sitting president so the choice is between having a failed impeachment proceeding that ends in an embarrassing defeat or not starting the whole circus in the first place.

Dude, everybody knows that they are liars. That Pelosi is fully aware of this and what they are trying to do makes irritating that the strategy it seems “let’s call them assholes and wait for the election”. Like I said, not a unreasonable one by any means, but probably one with bigger risks of it backfires (aka: they lose the election).

They aren't going to party whip just to impeach with 500 primary candidates in the middle of running.

Defeat sure, embarrassment? I'm a little more skeptical about that.

I hate the lazy comparison because the substance is drastically different, but impeachment worked against Clinton.

By the time his term ended his brand was so toxic that Al Gore and Bush were basically running against the image the impeachment had brought him. Gore didn't even really want him campaigning for him. Of course Fox News is really powerful today and such, but that was a guy that didn't commit a bunch of actual serious felonies.

From a purely ethical standpoint, the spinelessness is even more concerning.

I really don't mean any offense by this but this is the second or third time you've come in here with a complaint about democratic strategy but totally unrealistic or nonexistent alternatives. I know this is partly an exercise in frustration but you should consider that there isn't really anything anyone can do.

Impeachment is not the same as removal from office. I don't agree that impeaching Trump would hurt the Democrats; if anything, it would show them not to be spineless for once. Many Democratic voters cast their votes last November expecting a Democratic win to result in impeachment proceedings.

Seriously though, "the American people don't want impeachment" is the Republican narrative, nothing else.
Mueller's report lists hundreds of transgressions and felonies. Impeachment should be mandatory at this point.

You impeach Trump, he throws a hissy fit, makes a deal with Pence for a pardon and leaves for his golf courses.
Pelosi rather wants Trump as a lame duck than President Pence.

However this strategy is indeed based on the assumption that Trump does not get re-elected and John Bolton will not persuade him to start a war.

"In 1857, Congress made “contempt of Congress” a federal crime. The most recent version of this law was enacted in 1938, and it defines the crime as a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of $1,000 fine or 12 months’ imprisonment."
https://www.quickanddirtytips.com/business-career/legal/what-is-contempt-of-congress

WTF. How nice 40 people just had a 5-hour debate and that is all it's going to amount to?!
Will Barr be able to pay the full amount or will he go to prison? The suspense is killing me.

ngl i figured that site would be long dead but not only is it still up, but they just released a totally original and informative book:

Quote
Academics extol high-minded ideals, such as serving the common good and promoting social justice. Universities aim to be centers of learning that find the best and brightest students, treat them fairly, and equip them with the knowledge they need to lead better lives.

But as Jason Brennan and Phillip Magness show in Cracks in the Ivory Tower, American universities fall far short of this ideal. At almost every level, they find that students, professors, and administrators are guided by self-interest rather than ethical concerns. College bureaucratic structures also often incentivize and reward bad behavior, while disincentivizing and even punishing good behavior. Most students, faculty, and administrators are out to serve themselves and pass their costs onto others.

The problems are deep and pervasive: most academic marketing and advertising is semi-fraudulent. To justify their own pay raises and higher budgets, administrators hire expensive and unnecessary staff. Faculty exploit students for tuition dollars through gen-ed requirements. Students hardly learn anything and cheating is pervasive. At every level, academics disguise their pursuit of self-interest with high-faluting moral language.

Marshaling an array of data, Brennan and Magness expose many of the ethical failings of academia and in turn reshape our understanding of how such high power institutions run their business. Everyone knows academia is dysfunctional. Brennan and Magness show the problems are worse than anyone realized. Academics have only themselves to blame.
