Everyday I thank God for my free and anti-totalitarian democratic society :salute

I expected this to be a complete dead-end bill sponsored by some crank, but turns out it's being cosponsored by more than a third of the Republican members.

Even before formal articles of impeachment are drawn up, the proper result is clear: Donald Trump should be removed from office and disqualified from holding office again in the future. Mere impeachment is not enough.

Trump should be removed and disqualified from office for the precise set of reasons our Constitution’s Framers created this extraordinary process

...

Ironically for Trump’s defenders, their argument that this should be decided at the ballot box in the next election reveals precisely why he must be removed from office and disqualified from running again.

...

Other than denying him the Republican party nomination, impeachment by the House and removal and disqualification by the Senate is the only remedy.
How would this even work?

No, I know, but I mean how could the Senate supersede the Constitution's qualifications clause in a case where it's separately established. Surely the Senate cannot, simply by a majority vote, add additional qualifications required for holding the Presidency.

It seems like a case where the Senate's power of sentence would not extend. (Another would be in the case of the House and Senate as they have sole control over who can sit in their body beyond the Constitutional qualifications.)

they can disqualify a particular person from holding office as the result of an impeachment trial

seems p straightforward the way they wrote it

Right, again I'm saying I'm not sure that this power can truly extend to literally all offices where there's Constitutional qualifications. I'm not even sure it can apply to say, judgeships, as it seems to be binding future Senates.

And in today's banana-republic news:
"Barr disputes key inspector general finding about FBI’s Russia investigation"
(WaPo)
That's right folks, he disputes the findings of the investigation he ordered (I wonder why, considering according to Barr the Muller report exonerated Trump and presumably the Russians). Unfortunately for him, reality refused to change.

That American two party system where one party is outright criminal is awesome. Truly the greatest democracy on earth. Such checks, much balances!

Pompeo also said that the impeachment investigations should be put on pause while Trump is out of the country because it wouldn't be fair or something
Does Trump's refusal to cooperate require physical proximity?
And he obviously has enough stooges to obstruct justice in his stead during his absence.

you forgot about that part of the consitution and went for what looked like an easy dunk on the bulwark guy and now instead of saying "haha oops" you're pretending you meant something else (in which case "simple majority" for an impeachment trial ruling? c'mon son)

anyways after 10 seconds of googling I found this

Quote
WASHINGTON — The Senate on Wednesday found Judge G. Thomas Porteous Jr. of Federal District Court in Louisiana guilty on four articles of impeachment and removed him from the bench, the first time the Senate has ousted a federal judge in more than two decades.

Judge Porteous, the eighth federal judge to be removed from office in this manner, was impeached by the House in March on four articles stemming from charges that he received cash and favors from lawyers who had dealings in his court, used a false name to elude creditors and intentionally misled the Senate during his confirmation proceedings.

...

The senators also voted 94 to 2 to disqualify him from holding future federal office.

I'm pretty sure only the conviction has to be two-thirds majority, not any of the sentencing components.

And yes, I'm aware the Senate has done it (three times in total) I'm saying the Senate may not have unlimited power in this regard, especially when it comes to Constitutional offices. Being able to bar someone from the Presidency or the House seems problematic to me no matter what a Bill Weld campaign adviser may say.

I believe the plan is to not show up, not send any of his lawyers to any of the hearings so he can forever claim it was an unfair trial and also probably hoping some of the more bitch made Dems will feel squeamish voting to impeach/remove due to the OPTICS.

It will continue to further his narrative of being so helpless, defenseless, and picked on despite being the single most powerful human being on earth.
There is a plan  ???

The funny thing is that this probably her last chance. Gavin Newsom is going to pretend he's a popular governor and run in 2024, no matter who wins.
