I know that stuff is wishful thinking, but I'm curious if they just failed in actual primetime or the U.S. government was stupid enough to station troops on the border of the missile country without missile defense systems.

That must have been a blank map without national boundaries, right? I feel like if boundaries were shown you would expect more clustering toward the center of the country. Unless they spread out the dots a little bit to avoid hiding guesses that were for the same point.

The strangest thing to me are all of the guesses in the Mediterranean. People knew enough to not point away from the United States but not enough to find a land mass.

A huge number of people are completely geographically illiterate and a map of the world like that just appears to them to be a bunch of random shapes. It goes beyond thinking Iran might be in southern Europe.
