Serious answer to why Bernie's staying in:

There are very, very few opportunities to become president of the United States and he has to know this is his last one. If you could have considered yourself the favorite at some point in the race, it's very easy to talk yourself into the possibility of turning things back around (cf the Elizabeth Warren campaign).

This race has been his main focus and ambition for at least a year, maybe for five years running, and he's surrounded by people who love and support him. Those people themselves have invested themselves emotionally and professionally in his success. It's no surprise they find it hard to give up the ghost.

Sounds like a possible reiteration of the Warren campaign. The Buzzfeed News article did point out that it's been "his" campaign. Cult of personality could be involved.

But let's not forget, he also stayed in the race far too long in 2016 as well. So it's hard to know if it's what you say or a personality defect of just pure stubbornness.

Watching establishment Dems push old people to their deaths by forcing the today’s elections while Republicans like Tom fucking Cotton swing to their left over what is effectively UBI is awe-inspiringly dumb. The sheer incompetence.

Also, many of the usual reasons a politician could drop out don't really apply to Bernie.

The big one is running out of money. After that, you want to make nice with other people in the party for the sake of your future ambitions. Bernie can afford to campaign as long as he wants, he's not angling for Secretary of Labor or anything, he knows that his campaigns have been by far the biggest platform he's had for his ideas, he's not running again and even if he was he's not concerned about getting endorsements for next time.

It's not just that Pete and Amy were dead in the water. They didn't feel like they were carrying the banner for a whole ideological program and they still have a long time in Democratic politics so it's good to get on the right side of the next nominee.

And worse, they can't even see the political consequences.

True enough but M4A is now increasingly a mainstream idea. I worry he could endanger his ideas by becoming closely related to them. Conservatives like Jennifer Rubin HATE Bernie and by extension his ideas. By staying in the race he could be making the potentiality for him becoming toxic to Democratic voters, and by extension, his platform.

So there's risk in what he's doing.

The point is that Trump will outflank the Democrats to the left if they're not careful.

Trump did the same thing with Hillary because the Democrats fail to see that Kushner, Mnuchin, Ivanka et all were New York Demcrats and Democrat donors.
They're not ideological conservatives and down ballot Trump's people replacing the old GOP also aren't ideological conservatives.

I'm sorta surprised they didn't try to take over the competition by having Ivanka run in the Democratic primaries.

Here's what I want from this thread for the next two months:

- no one is allowed to "give credit where credit is due"
- the primaries are over. We can talk about dumb incrementalism again
- cauliflower has to start grief therapy
- Tulsi posting is no longer allowed

Stretch goal: all Rubin posting will stop immediately

Right now a lot of people are pointing out that clearly we do have the money for xyz, but what impresses me more than that is that it seems we're actually ok with a huge hit to our standard of living if we need to take collective action against a major threat. Kind of makes me more optimistic about climate change mitigation.

Yeah the initial dismissiveness towards Cornavirus made me wallow in despair. The past week or so has been so optimistic despite the dire situation.

Some in each of the states — 9% in Arizona, 13% in Illinois and 15% in Florida — say they would vote for Biden, but not Sanders. Somewhat fewer — 6% in Arizona, 8% in Illinois and 5% in Florida — say they would vote for Sanders, but not Biden.

This guy is living in Fantasy Land if he thinks a discretionary low interest loan is going to keep companies from laying off massive amounts of employees.

If these senators keep fucking around with this situation and continue pulling their usual shit, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of their constituency becoming violent towards them.  Like, not aggressive posturing, but real and purposeful violence.

I’m not condoning it at all, particularly since it would be ineffective.  But I also wouldn’t be shocked in the least, not with how dire the situation could become before we get through to the other side of this outbreak.

One big lesson of post-2008 politics for me is how many people will default to getting angry at the people and groups they already didn't like, rather than the obvious culprits behind a huge disaster.

At this point I think it's likelier that someone shoots up a Chinese church than someone taking a run at Louie Gohmert for personally delaying an aid bill.

Are they really expecting businesses to take on this kind of risk for 6% less interest?  For an unknown period of time?

watch out for the flanking maneuver guys

If trump goes ahead with Trumpbucks while Biden starts taking about his nerd ass payroll tax holiday, and asking about “HoW wIlL wE PAy fOR it??” They will have effectively outflanked them on the left.

The other thing about Trump is he doesn’t actually give a shit about any specific policy. If he gets clout for Trumpbucks, his instinct will just be to do more Trumpbucks.

An economically progressive but also xenophobic party would be a juggernaut in American politics.

An alternate strategy would be to just pay most of payroll for any company that doesn’t lay-off workers or furlough them and maintains xx% of their salary for the duration of the crisis. Then freeze bank loan payments and whatever else for the duration of the crisis.

They will have to print probably $1 trillion every 3 months at least, until people can go outside again to make it through this crisis. The Democrats idea is dumb as shit and won’t even work.

You guys are losing your minds if you think the Republicans are going to become the economically left party because they're considering dropping an one-time extra sized bonus tax rebate currently.

Bernie should drop out if he loses big on Tuesday and push his ideas to be taken on by the Democratic Party in another manner.
Like all that success he had with the party platform in the years where he (or a certain black man he was backing) wasn't running for President through the convention?

Trump has altered his stated positions to fit the party more than vice versa.
